hadriel_logs | Intro Log: Off my chest

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for April.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: April 10th-13th
Warnings: Newbies, explosions, and things that are definitely treasure chests and not evil monsters out to get you.

Welcome to your first day in Hadriel! Enjoy your surroundings, meet your fellow travelers, and be sure to start exploring so you can collect as much loot as possible!

On the ground around you may notice bang snaps, scattered haphazardly. Try not to step on any of them, or you might burn your feet! Feel free to gather them up and use these baby fireworks however you see fit; there are dozens strewn about on the ground. Popping them will emit clouds of smoke of various colors, and... well, not much else.

Is there anything else lurking around? Glad you asked! If you look around, you may find a few innocent-looking treasure chests. Which you know, normally means free loot- except, in Hadriel, nothing is quite the way it's advertised of course and the chests are actually dangerous mimics. Mimics- often disguised as treasure chests- are monsters with surprisingly quick movements and gaping maws filled with teeth. They exist to try and fool an unlucky traveler into thinking they've gotten something good... only to lunge at them in their moment of triumph and prove that life is actually terrible and nothing comes for free.

Once you've managed your daring escape from the colosseum, feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[ Gansey looks over. He's passing, not going inside, but at the boy's words, he looks up at the tower. They are impressive. He'd thought so when he first arrived; they mark the city out, more than anything else. ]

Some do. I don't, though. There's houses, too. But I think there's apartments in the spires.

[ He turns to smile at the newcomer. ]

Do you plan on claiming one?

[ Yu glanced at him, a faint look of surprise on his face, before he returned the smile with a faint one of his own. ]

That seems like the best idea. I'll need a place to live.

[ Gansey nods. For all that he knows no one ever likes settling here, it's best to find somewhere early. ]

The gods restored them, I think. A new one became habitable after Delight returned. I suppose that, as more of them appear, more of the city will renew.

[ A pause. ]

At least, I imagine that's the intent.

The gods... right.

[ He felt his hand drifting down to the pocket the phone he had woken up with, a frown creasing his face. ]

...just how much of a problem are they, really?

Interesting question. It depends on which one you’re talking about.

[ Gansey is most wary of Fear and Rage, but they’re not his only concerns. What Hope does can be painful, and the high that Delight offers ends with a crash. ]

They draw strength from our emotions. I realize that sounds ridiculous, but it’s true. It’s some sort of empathy, I expect. But to make it work, they do things that make us feel certain ways. Their names are Fear, Delight, Rage and Hope. They live up to their names.

They make us?

[ Delight and Hope, he could understand. Hell, Izanami had outright referred to him as Hope in her game before. Fear... well, it was a thing. He may have maxed out his Courage, but that didn't mean he wasn't capable of fear. Rage...? Once. Only once. ]

[ He had a good reason, at least. ]

And... I'm used to ridiculous. I believe you.

[ Belief is an interesting thing. This is not truly a place where belief is required, because the gods will do what they do regardless. But an open mind is better. It’ll make this easier, at least in part. Gansey is sympathetic. ]

They do things to make us. I’ll give you an example.

Not long ago, Hope gave us mirrors, and in them, we saw our future. Or at least, a version of our future. It was different for everyone, but it seemed to be…more or less, what we would want to happen. It was just an image, but…you can imagine how that would make you feel.

[ His future... he knew what kind of future he wanted: one with all his friends together, where they'd never have to go their own separate ways. He felt his gut twist at that, but he quietly shook the feeling off. ]

...yes, I can imagine.

[ Strangely enough, that's exactly what Gansey's mirror had shown. That his smile is sad as a result is very telling. ]

It's worth knowing what they do, so that you can watch for it. They'll all try to make us feel a certain way for a while. It always passes, but dealing with it...is not the easiest thing.

[ Such a cheerful place he ended up in, hunh? Yu gave a faint nod at that, and his smile was a little bit more forced that time. ]

Well, only one way to find out for myself, I suppose.

Onward and upward.

[ Decent attitude, Gansey thinks. Better than the alternative. ]

I can show you around, if you like. There’s places to find food, clothes. Places to avoid, too.

[ Yu smiled faintly at that last one. ]

I'd like that.

[ His grip tightened slightly on his sword. ]

I can take care of myself, but the less I need to, the better.

You aren't on your own here. None of us ought to feel that way.

[ They're not exactly a united and happy little community. Gansey isn't quite naive enough to think that. But at the very least, they could help each other. They should do so, wherever they can. ]

Where first, then? I suppose where you can find food is the most important thing.

[ Yu opened his mouth to respond, only to have his stomach answer for him. He immediately snapped his mouth shut, a bit of a pink tint coming to his face. ]

...yes, I'd like that, thank you.

[ It seems like that's a winner. Gansey's smile is sympathetic, and he nods towards the stores. ]

Come on, then. Sadly most of what's here is in cans, but it's better than nothing. And Hope restocks it often enough.
