What: The event log for the Extinction event!
Where: All around the city
When: July 22nd-July 29th

On July 22nd, Hope puts the call out for a little help with this monster problem he's been having - for the second time. In exchange for some prizes, he'd like you to go into the caves and kill him a few monsters! He'll be keeping an eye out and rewarding you for each kill, so grab a friend and a sword and get to work. Just try not to get lost in the caves - they're pretty extensive, and no one seems to have a decent map. Also, you know. They're full of slavering hellbeasts.
If you're not a fighter, don't worry! Hope also wants to clean things up around the city a little. There'll be caches of cleaning supplies, tools, paint, and other various piece of beautifying equipment available to find in the shops, and he plans to reward people for the time and effort they put in there, too! His sense of artistry is not particularly advanced, so don't worry about impressing him. You'll probably get an A for effort regardless.
For those characters participating in the beautifying portion of the event, please comment here with a brief description of what your character will be doing - for example 'painting three buildings and cleaning up the roads around the clinic'. If your character will be killing some of the monsters, please comment here and let us know how many they've taken out - for example 'three cacodemons and one troll'. For reference, here is a list of the amount of each monster that can be found in the caves:

Blobs (31)
Cacodemons (140!!!)

[ Gansey looks up, turning a smile towards Steve. He's planting an array of brightly colored plants in a copse of green closeby. He has made at least some effort to make the colors match those in Steve's painting. ]
A ladder might be possible, though. Have you asked Hope? He might be willing, given that he's the one who asked us to do all of this.
no subject
[But then he thinks that Gansey probably already knew that. Steve thinks about the advice, nodding to show that he might just do that once he cleans up a little.]
I always did more sketching than painting, black and white. That way I was sure to get all the colors right. [Steve looks at the other's painting in appreciation.] I wish we saw more of those around here.
no subject
[ Gansey looks up with a smile. ]
I suppose it always was lacking in them. Something awful happened in this place. Life seems to return in stages, with each god resurrection.
Perhaps there used to be flowers everywhere. There's no way to know.
no subject
[Maybe it would've taken more time. There wouldn't have been any sudden orchards, that's for sure. Steve notices something in his wagon, and goes to take the slightly busted wooden box back out of it. It'll be a little bit of a boost for the next one.]
Back home, every now and then you could spot a flower trying to grow out of a crack in the pavement. Sometimes life's just stubborn that way.
[Thinking back has sort of inspired him. Steve starts dabbing grays and whites onto a fresh, blank space.]
no subject
[ Gansey glances at Steve. That’s a hopeful thing to say. Far more so than he normally hears from people here. He can’t help smiling. ]
Maybe the cave will grow strong again, then. Maybe the whole world, presuming there is a world outside of all this.
What are you painting now?
no subject
[Steve keeps layering, and it looks a little muddled, not as pleasing to the eye as the one he painted before. But then he starts painting a green stem and leaves, the yellow top to it. He shades and highlights, until it finally looks like a dandelion growing from concrete instead of dirt. Steve steps back to stand at Gansey's side, rubbing his sore shoulder as he looks up at it.]
Now that I think about it...are those even considered flowers or are they just weeds?
no subject
A flower is only a weed when it's unwanted. I want it.
[ He stands up, folding his arms. ]
This is what we should do. We should show them our plants, our trees. Our world. They all act as though they've never seen them before.
no subject
Yeah. [Steve likes that idea too, and he can instantly remember so many things, from his favorite tree to the flowers that his neighbor grew and loved.] If we can't go home yet, we can bring a little of it here.
[He looks down at the buckets of paint that he's lined up and chooses one to dip his brush into.]
The good news is, they won't even need watering.
no subject
[ Gansey finishes packing earth around his plant and gets up, dusting soil from his hands. He leaves the others where they are and moves over to Steve instead, folding his arms in front of the mural. ]
Can I help? I've spent a good few summers trawling through Henrietta's greenest places. I think I could manage a wildflower or two.
no subject
[Steve answers with the sort of enthusiasm that says that Gansey didn't even need to ask. He gives Gansey some room, access to any of the supplies that he's gathered, before he just sits down out of the way completely.]
How long's it been now?
[That he's been here and not in Henrietta.]
no subject
[ Gansey goes over beside Steve, and begins to paint a patch of green. Dots of purple follow, until it starts to take shape as a patch of heather. ]
I went home last month.
[ He doesn’t know how many people noticed. Gansey hasn’t spoken of it widely. He never likes to give bad news. ]
We all did, except Noah. Before that, I’d been here for four. And now another one.
[ He looks up at Steve. ]
What about you? It’s been a while now, hasn’t it?
no subject
[Steve's never really talked to anyone that it's happened to, and he wonders if it gives Gansey the same mix of emotions that Steve feels just thinking about it.]
Almost half a year now. Time flies when you're having fun. [The sardonic smile on his lips is short-lived.] Does it feel weird?
no subject
[ Because it had been terrible, and harrowing, and Gansey is lucky to be alive in the wake of it all.
Unbelievably lucky, as it happens. ]
It doesn’t feel weird to be back. It feels like we just continued on, as if nothing even happened. At home it felt like we’d achieved something, like there was something new waiting for us. And now we’re back here, and I wanted the new beginning.
Nothing to be done about it, I’m afraid.
no subject
[Steve repeats thoughtfully, lapsing into silence as he just watches Gansey work. But he finally speaks up again.]
I wish it would happen to me. I wouldn't mind coming back, I think a part of me even wants to. But I'd be- [Different? Maybe that's not the right word. Everyone who knows tells him that he's the same, just different on the outside.] I'd be better able to help out around here. I wouldn't be as out of breath or short.
no subject
What's that mean? If you're going home for medical treatment, you know we have the clinic here.
[ Which...is barely able to handle emergency medicine, but there you go. Gansey watches with interest. ]
Where are you going that you'll end up taller?
no subject
[Steve's thankful that he at least knows that much, along with things like how they win the war. But really, the Door couldn't have given him five more minutes? He looks up, suddenly remembering something.]
Arya, you know her? She said that I was here in that body for a little while. She didn't believe I was really me at first.
no subject
Jesus. Steve, that's...
What exactly is it supposed to do? I mean, I'm glad that it doesn't...do you damage, or anything, but that's a hell of a risk to take.
no subject
Yeah. [He smiles a little when the other trails off. Whatever he was about to say was probably true anyway.] They were trying to make supersoldiers to fight Hitler with. Faster, Stronger, the whole ball of wax. Except I guess they just get the one.
no subject
[ It's like something out of a comic book. Or a movie.
But in fairness, Gansey is quite well informed when it comes to world history, and that such a thing might have been attempted at the time does not overly surprise him. What surprises him is the news that it had worked. Or would work, whichever way you looked at it. ]
So that's what you're going to do? Fight in World War Two...
You'll be a national hero. But Christ, Steve, I wouldn't wish the war on you. If that's where you're going, the things you'll have to see...
It's not going to be pleasant.
no subject
[Despite his gift for art, all Steve really ever wanted to be was a soldier like his dad. It kind of sounds like a dream come true, but he's picked up enough things from enough people by now to know that it's not always smooth sailing, broad shoulders or not.]
I know. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But it's happening, and I wanna do my part.
no subject
You're very brave, then. Looking for a way in when there must be plenty of people who'd have sought a way out.
Still, it's an extreme thing to do. Weren't you afraid something would go wrong?
no subject
[A soft smirk appears on his lips. Yeah, Bucky would probably have a lot of choice words for what he did.]
Sorta. [Steve shrugs his shoulders while he tries to think of a way to put his thoughts and feelings into words.] I've been afraid of a lot of things. But...it's always stuff I'm gonna do anyway, so there never seems to be much point in it.
no subject
[ What a curious way to look at it. Steve, Gansey thinks, would get along very well with Henry Cheng. His look turns thoughtful. ]
A friend once told me that if I couldn't stop being afraid, I should be afraid and happy. Own the fear, I suppose. Is that what you do?
no subject
[Afraid and happy. Afraid and brave. Afraid and alive. Steve can see how it would work. He's been all of those things at one time or another.]
I know it's not as easy as 'just don't be afraid.' If it was, I reckon no one ever would be. [Afraid. He looks up at Gansey.] But I think fear can change people if they let it, and it's always for the worse. I won't let that happen to me. [Steve thinks for a moment before smiling gently at him.] Your friend must want the best for you.
no subject
Shrugging, he smiles. ]
Well, he's a good friend. Fear can be a controlling thing and I think he understood that.
You're right too, though. Just because it can change you doesn't mean it will. I hope that doesn't ever change about you, Steve, even if your body does.
