On the 24th of September, you wake up and everything seems pretty normal. You've got to head in for your shift at the guard, or at the clinic, or wherever else people go- maybe you're visiting a friend, maybe you're checking out the library, but either way as soon as you step out onto your street, you're in a foreign location.
No, you haven't been transported anywhere weird. Well, not by anything other than your own two feet. And hey, you could recognize a landmark and know your way back from there! But somehow you turn left instead of right and now everything is confusing again. It's not that the city itself is changing, but rather, it's your ability to take direction and move in the way that you think you should.
On top of all that, of course, is the strange inversion of most abilities. Everything is topsy turvy with your various powers or individual skills, so be on the lookout for some odd changes. Maybe you're usually pretty good at reasoning and now you can't think your way out of a paper bag, or maybe you have fire powers that start shooting icicles instead- either way, it's weird. Hopefully you can deal with it without injuring yourself too much, but... well, it's kind of difficult to make any guarantees when you can't even find your way to the clinic when you accidentally break something.► This log covers September 24th-October 2nd.

Guard HQ
[She's on fire.
So she makes her way slowly into what she hoped would be the clinic but is evidently the Guard headquarters, careful not to touch anything that might be flammable.
Like another person, for instance.]
Anyone in here? Fair warning, I'm on fire, so don't get too close, but oh god I'm tired of wandering 'round.
no subject
He brushes off the fragments of plastic with annoyance, and looks up with a glare.
Only for that to fade as he blinks in surprise.]
...So I can see. [God have mercy. She is literally on fire. Yet it doesn't seem to be hurting her.] There is space in here. Try not to touch anything.
[Well, he can somewhat sympathise with her predicament, all things considered. Luckily their HQ was created out of a former warehouse.
His gaze remains on her, following her every movement.]
Are you not Kate's friend from Dundee?
no subject
She glances at her hands (still on fire, damn) while Henry speaks, only looking up when he asks his question.]
Yeh. I see Kate told you a bit about me. [Faith smiles, though it's a bit uncertain.] Didn't want it to be this way, the first time we met. Y'know, with me being on fire.
[Oops?]
no subject
'Tis not as though you could harm me at current. I am not so sure about the reverse.
[He tilts his head thoughtfully and eyes her flaming hands speculatively, though perhaps he shouldn't be indulging any curiosity about how their powers might clash, even if just in his mind. For all that she said she could heal herself back when zombies roamed the streets, it isn't wise.]
Northumberland. [He says in explanation.] Because I call it home, she wondered how familiar I was with your hometown. That is all.
no subject
[Yet still she laughs at her predicament, just a bit. Once this is all over, she'll laugh more, tell the story with a grin.]
Oh that's not too far off! [He sounds more old timey than anyone from there she's ever come across, but that makes sense -- makes sense only because they're here, where there are people from all over time and all sorts of worlds.
Weird, how you'll accept just about anything when your life's thrown on its head like this.]
I'm all right, no burns. [And thank goodness her clothes are unharmed. Imagine.
No. Don't imagine.] Good to finally meet ya! Haven't needed to do any healing since I got here, but the offer's still good.
no subject
Phoenix? [He huffs a short, dry laugh.] Of course.
[With that combination of powers, what else but a mythical beast of flame and renewal? Though given that she's on fire against her will, he's rather dubious about her offer.]
Should you right now?
no subject
Right? I mean, yeh, it fits, but sometimes I feel like it's a bit much? [She shrugs, and the flames coming off her shoulders jump a little higher in response.
Cheeky fire. Just what she needs. Faith snickers and rolls her eyes.]
Oh no, this doesn't hurt me. S'everyone else who needs to worry. This fire's more dangerous than normal fire. [As if to take up less space, she crosses her arms. If she looks like a child who's a bit miffed they got told to sit still for a bit, then... that's not an inaccurate comparison.] Scars and damage from it never go away.
no subject
Zeal may be great on a battlefield, but it's an inconvenience for mundane tasks where the point isn't to annihilate everything he makes contact with.]
Good God.
[The thought makes him shudder. His experiences with fire in Hadriel has left memories that haunt his dreams. Maketh grotesquely transformed by a wendigo spirit and her terrible mercy killing. Kate's monster and its burning stump, metal melting into skin, the awful consequences of choosing to survive. He can almost smell cooked flesh, almost feel an echo of agony. He remembers battlefields filled with dragon fire.
With a grimace, Henry shakes his head. Her flames is not a particular worry for him, but for others...]
Perhaps you should stay put a while. [And then he adds:] ...Is contact not required for you to heal others?
no subject
Especially if she brings up bad memories for him. That's the last thing she wants. Good thing she's too busy looking at the flames dancing on her knees to see him grimace.]
Yeh, think I'll stay here til it goes out. [It's ... it'll probably be a bit. Last time, it lasted nearly an hour.] Mm, no? Just got to be close to them. Usually do touch 'em, though. Helps me focus.
no subject
[It seems it's definitely not wise to rely on her healing while Confusion's interference reigns. He sets his pen down once he's done writing.]
I suppose I ought to properly introduce myself. [He cannot recall doing it over the network, so.] Henry Percy.
[He rather hopes that, like Kate, she has no knowledge of nor interest in history. There might as well be some advantage to being over six hundred years behind most people from Earth. Aside from martial skills, that is.]
no subject
[People must be really good at medicine and such, to live in a world or time with no healing magic. Seems really inconvenient to Faith, but if it works for them, then... well, what else can they do?]
Oh, good to meet you, Mr. Percy. 'M Faith Carr. Call me Faith!
[You're in luck, Henry! History is not one of Faith's strong suits, so she has no idea about the bad blood that makes you hesitant around Scots.]
When are you from, then?
no subject
I am a knight. The correct form of address would be 'Sir'. [If she wants to use formalities, they might as well be correct.] Yet if I am to call you Faith, then you must call me Henry.
[Henry picks up his pen again to add her name to his notes. As he does so, he answers her question.]
Thirteen ninety-three.
no subject
[Admittedly, Faith's view on knights is rather romanticized, but it's still an impressive achievement, she thinks, being knighted.]
no subject
It helps, certes. I can wield every weapon in the armoury and I know how to effectively employ those skilled their use. I know what any force needs to thrive. I know how to defend a populace.
That I may offer something of value to this community is... important.
[There is nothing he hates more than being useless to everyone and accomplishing nothing. Real chivalry is a combination of high ideals and brutality, and he is dedicated to being the best knight he can be. That is why he and Maketh made the Guard in the first place: because of their shared need to act and a desire make a difference through the only means they know how.]
no subject
Haha. Good knight. She'll have to tell him that one someday.]
Oh yeh, I agree. 'm not so able to do that now -- when I can control the fire, it's helpful, but like this I could just hurt somebody -- but I was actually thinking I might sign up for Guard duty now and then. Actually, I told a friend I would, and I don't want to disappoint the little one!
[See, Shadow? Faith is true to her word. But also, she can help, and she wants to.]
no subject
[It would be foolish to do otherwise, given what Faith is apparently capable of. He knows well the value of a willing heart too. He likes to think that it is a shared proactive valour that binds the guardsmen.]
Little one...? [She can only mean Shadow.] Call you him that to his face?
[Henry asks with interest. He hopes so: Shadow certainly deserves to be wound up for once.]
no subject
It takes her a second to remember that of course Henry would know Shadow, because didn't Shadow say he's part of the Guard?]
Oooh no, not to 'is face. [
Yet.] I call him Mr. Hedgehog sometimes, though.[She catches the look on Henry's face though. She'll try it at some point, once she and Shadow are closer. Playful trolling -- that's what friends are for!]
no subject
[It occurs to Henry that, being an outsider, Faith might think it harsher than it is. Running a hand through his hair, he adds:]
He is a valued member of the Guard, you understand. But he oft enjoys being an annoyance.
[Mostly just towards Henry, because he reacts.]
no subject
Oh yeh, he was givin' me sass when we met, but he's a cute one, isn't he! [Faith thinks the vast majority of people are cute.] Don't think 'Mr. Hedgehog' bothers 'im much, though.
no subject
[He's smiling, though.]
How much time will you commit to us? We schedule all guardsmen, so it would help if we knew.
no subject
Hmm... two or three times a week, I can patrol for a few hours? And of course, I can be on call if there's somethin' to fight. That good? When d'you need people most?
no subject
That would work just fine. 'Tis when crises befall the whole city that our need is greatest.
no subject
A crisis is when I'm at me best!
no subject
I shall take your word for it.
[He has to question why anyone would be so enthusiastic about crises, however much they allow one to feel as though one is making a real difference.]
no subject
Just then, the flames all over her start to go out, like a dying campfire.]
Oh thank god. [Faith sighs as the last of them fade away.] I'm starting to get hungry, but I don't want to burn down the orchard.
