Event Log: Fourth Wall, Part Two

Who: Everyone in the city + Fourth Wall visitors!
What: Part two of the fourth wall event, hosted by Sorrow, Rage, and Hope!
Where: All around the city
When: November 1st-November 7th
Warnings: Visitors from other worlds!

Welcome to Hadriel! Or, for those who have been here, please continue enjoying your stay. Perhaps you arrived here last week, and have been wandering around since then, making new friends. Or perhaps you've just arrived, and have no idea what's going on. You may have woken up in the colosseum, or near a temple, or in one of the numerous other locations in the city. You might be confused and frightened to find yourself in this underground city, or maybe you're just wondering why you haven't been sent home yet, when others have.

Whatever the case may be, the situation in the city has changed somewhat. There is still a gently glowing path leading you to a nicely-outfitted party, but the specifics of it have changed. If you're a new arrival, it'll be easy to follow the path and find the party - if you're not, well, the color of the light has changed, signalling that something's different. Maybe you want to check it out?

Around the clearing are gently glowing flowers, illuminating both the tables and the rest of the area, bright enough to make things clear even when the larger light at the apex of the cave is gone. On the tables are an array of different kinds of food - however, sampling this food will quickly make it clear that nearly everything is spicy, whether subtly so or with a burning heat. The cookies seem to have chili oil in them, the dip has jalapeno-like peppers. It's hard to find anything that won't burn your mouth a bit. If you're lucky enough to find something that doesn't, though, it will most certainly be somewhat bitter or quite sour. That doesn't mean the food tastes bad - if spicy and sour are your sort of thing, they're delicious! If you're looking for something more normal, though, you're out of luck.

Also on the tables are a variety of drinks, and these at least are not spicy. Instead, they're the sort of warm, comforting drinks that might remind you of home, of curling up in a soft blanket while rain falls outside. Warm cocoa, hot cider, teas of various flavors. Just the sort of thing to soothe a worried newcomer.

Decorating the area are various banners with welcoming messages saying things like 'HADRIEL' 'THIS IS A PARTY' 'EAT FOOD' and 'DO NOT DIE'. They are all identical, with large black block letters on plain white paper. They look very similar to something that you might print out on a standard office laser printer at the last minute if you have no discernible sense of humor or fun.

Scattered around can be found exciting party games such as pin the tail on the donkey and musical chairs. Here and there can also be found various pinatas of different types. Break them open, see what comes out! If you're really lucky it'll be candy - if not, it might be full of bouncy balls or cherry tomatoes. Good times!

Or maybe you don't like parties? No worries. The rest of the city has plenty of places to explore- maybe you'd like to stumble in our Silent Hill zone, have a quick look around the alien orchard, or check out any of the god temples that can inspire their chosen emotion. Be careful not to get lost in the tunnels leading away from the cave- none of them can actually move you above ground, but you may run into a few monsters on the way.

For those of you who came last week, here's your chance to help out newbies along with the people who have been here forever! Join in on the festivities if you like, or try to orient as many of the others as you can. Rule the newcomers at musical chairs, continue your fight club, pick up a second weird cave girlfriend and then watch as they dump you and hook up with each other! There's no end to the possible fun.

Enjoy the fourth wall event at Hadriel! Once you're settled in feel free to explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies.

Fourth wall characters do not enter with phones so they cannot reach the network- however, if you'd like to handwave that they somehow got ahold of Mello's Newcomer guide to avoid the 'where am I/what is this' sort of questions, then feel free!

Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers November 1st-November 7th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well! Fourth wall characters will not have posting access, so grab an in-game friend if you wanted to do anything separate from the main log.
► Fourth wall characters will be in the city for at least one week. If you want them to stay longer, our applications are now open!
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

IV | Original (Project SERAPHIM)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-02 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I. Party

Among the influx of new and old, stands a woman who appears to come from a time of old herself. If not for an air about her that seems off, one would wonder if she hailed from sometime either before or during the McCarthy era.

It isn't just the blank smiles or the dead eyes that give her true nature away. Though there is certainly something wrong with her eyes, given their strange, inhuman shade of orange that at times they could almost glow when she casts a vacant smile, hollow and devoid of empathy for her fellows.

Yet, despite the surface levels of her disposition, IV is quite amused. Most people who decides to initiate conversation will receive some level of pleasantries, ad even a name upon inquiry. But the name she provides isn't her own. To most, they get Theora de la Vega, a humble researcher who seeks to better the lives of humanity by creating powered exoskeletons for a New Hampshire university. In truth, it had been a few years since IV had assumed such an identity, growing rather bored of the charade.

Over time, her mask slips. This is not a woman of compassion, who could care less for those who would benefit from her inventions.

Truth be told, she is just plain bored. She should be back at her prison, at the old drawing board. She should be a lot of things, and yet she is here.

As hours pass, the woman with the unnatural orange eyes neither sips a drink nor nibbles a piece of food. Despite this, she can be seen pulling out a cigarette. A little trinket she had confiscated from the many humans at her sky prison.

"You got a light?" she asks the nearest, be they a curious denizen or accompanying visitor.

II. Wandering

Seeing that IV has no need for food or sleep in her present body, she spends much of her time awake. She doesn't tire, doesn't fret over the tiresome upkeeps of a mortal meatbag, though she has taken brief strolls in such vessels. Tragically, they never seemed to last very long before breaking down, and thus IV has never sought the appeal of living.

She has no reason to live here, either, but there is a sense in the air that intrigues her. It's not solely the lack of airwaves in the atmosphere, or her ability to synchronize with a physical network (a technical kind, yes. A magical one, however? Not really).

There is another synthetic here, like here. Perhaps more. She can sense them. The vibrations are faint, barely noticeable. IV has time. She has time and boredom, and plenty of both things to spare.

"Where oh where are you hiding, little cuties?" IV hums in a singsong whisper as she trudges along. While she does not appear to be dressed for a casual stroll through some parts of the cities, with her long fur coat, pencil skirt, blouse, and heels that make her three inches taller than she already is.

Even though she may be armed with nothing more than a shock baton, the warden of a synthe-run sky prison is still not a force to be reckoned with. If nothing else, her presence alone is enough to give one the jeebies.

"Sure, babe. I'll light your fire any time," Kasai grins. A classy looking lady with fucking dead evil-looking orange eyes? Yeah. He can totally dig that.

He flicks his fingers, starting a small flame flickering near, but not actually on, his fingertips. Holding his hand out for her, he gives IV his most charming smile... which honestly comes off as the skeeziest grin ever, especially considering his own level of dress right now: bright red untucked dress shirt, cargo pants and the ol' baseball cap with the kanji for 'fire' picked out in metal studs. Mr. Fashion, he ain't.

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-02 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, the act of courtship. At least it is an attempt at one. IV has spent enough time among humans to get the gist of their song and dance to recognize a pickup line when she hears one. And a particularly abysmal one, at that.

Rather than acting put off in any way, she just gives a slight lift of her thin brows at the fire on the man's fingertips. It isn't a display she hasn't seen before, though it isn't by any means a common one. At the same time, she can tell that this one individual must be organic, so it must be some other form of party trick from the one she knows.

How interesting, the sorts this place reels in.

"Fond of fire, are we?" IV says, her voice as smoky as the gray clouds billowing out of her breath. It isn't real, just a simulated response of this body of hers. At least she doesn't have the inconveniences of cancer to concern herself over.

"Yeah, you could say it kindled my interest," Kasai says, followed by a positively terrible chuckle at his own pun.

He snaps his hand shut and the flame is gone again, just like that. His own cigarette locked firmly in the corner of his mouth, he tries to keep it going, be suave. Maybe he's got something here. "Not the only thing either. What say we ditch the party? There's gotta be a nicer joint around here. Maybe get a fancy dinner if you're down for that... ?"

He's really not a smooth operator, but he's trying.

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-03 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
And what a comedian, as well! IV forces a frivolous laugh, light and breathy as she assumes amusement. She is capable of being entertained, but the thought of pulling the strings of someone so easily charmed by the appearance of this vessel is too rich of an opportunity to pass. He may as well have served her a cure for insomnia on a silver platter, if she ever tired.

"That is very sweet of you," IV muses, taking a long drag of her cigarette. Smoke plumes out her nostrils. Sure, she'll keep this song going. Play him like a damn fiddle, if possible. "But yes, let's. I would very much like to see the sights that this place has to offer."

Good thing she doesn't give a toss about whether he's smooth or not, so long as he's fun. The look on his face in the end will be worth it.

[personal profile] prettyhotstuff 2016-11-09 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Blowing his own cloud of smoke, Kasai shoots her a grin and leads the way, heading in the opposite direction of the glowing path. It's not like he knows his way around here either though, so he picks a random direction and starts walking. They'll have to find something around here eventually, right?

"Pretty quiet out here," he says after the first couple blocks of empty buildings and shops though, not really impressed with the state of the mostly empty city now that they've left the party proper. He likes things a bit livelier, the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, the cacophony of pachinko parlours. "Why don'tcha tell me about about yourself? Where you're from, that kinda thing."

With the streets abuzz with new arrivals, Nick is back to patrolling, albeit a bit slower than he used to, given the cane. Though there are more new folks coming in than have ever shown up in one go, he's noticed they're not being added to the network. That's undoubtedly something to look into. Maybe Hope got tired of handing out new devices. For now, he makes another sweep of the streets away from the gathering, just in case some of them got lost coming in -- or if something came in with them that needs to be taken care of.

Something did come in with the newcomers; Nick just doesn't know it, doesn't recognize it as he rounds the corner of a building and spots a woman just down the road. Heels, fur coat -- she seems to have missed the party she's dressed for.

"You lost, Miss?" he questions, making his way toward her.
witnesses: (love is a many splendored thing)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-02 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this? What is this?

A grin smears across the synthetic woman's pale face when she turns to address the voice (he calls her a 'Miss', no less! Such civility). One doesn't need a sixth sense in tracing her own kind for IV to know what this man is right away. And for that, she suppresses a laugh, because even the most unruly synthes back in Concordia looked miles better than that.

Little does Nick know, it was that sense IV has that actually led her to him. But instead, she feigns surprise when she lays eyes on him, masking her own delight under a layer of astonishment and awe.

"Look. At. You!" she exclaims, her mouth curling from the twisted smirk into an elated smile. "My, aren't you the sight."

She may have purposefully dodged the initial question. She is by far too charmed at this new discovery to be earnest.
synthedick: (♦ troubled waters)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-02 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Nick halts as the woman turns to him, his yellow eyes catching hers... and in them, he finds similarities with his own. The unnatural color is one thing, but the glow behind them, the way they don't reflect any kind of emotion -- they're not like any human's, or even like Glacius' with their illumination. They're hollow, unnatural. Synthetic. She's almost good enough to pass, like Rey, but somehow so distinctly artificial that she could never seem human.

But he's dealt with his fair share of synths -- some convincing and some not -- and she's an easy enough read for a detective. Given the way she looks at him and her immediate reaction, he gets the distinct feeling she's less like him than he'd like to believe, and more akin to one of the Institute's people-snatching numbers.

But everyone deserves at least a chance. "I've seen better days," he returns, letting her comment slide.
witnesses: (good golly miss molly)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-02 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Though lacking in emotions, that doesn't mean that IV isn't able to comprehend them on the surface level. It's that skill that allows her to emulate an expression of shock at Nick's reply.

"What are you saying? No, honey, you're absolutely perfect. Why, I daresay you're art," she says breathlessly. Not that she needs breath to begin with. The routine of inhale and exhaling is simply an aesthetic. "Love the look, by the way. It has a certain... noir appeal. Are you a detective, or did I arrive in time for Halloween?"

Well, it was October just a few days ago, until she had been so rudely extracted from her work.

Oh well. This will do, for now. Besides, this is so much more interesting!
synthedick: (♠ the hold out)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-02 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Detective," he replies, albeit a bit flatly as he watches her expression change. To be fair, her Halloween comment isn't too far off the mark, or at least not if his internal calendar is still anywhere near correct. He finishes his walk to her, closing the gap in a few, uneven steps.

"I take it you're new here. The name's Nick Valentine."
witnesses: (memories are made of this)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-02 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
A detective! If there was any reason for discretion before, IV has thrown it all out the window now. It wouldn't take long for anyone with a perceptive mind to notice the particular oddities about her. Not like she makes any effort to hide it, anyway.

"Cute. A mechanical private dick. What ingenious concepts will they think of next!" Her smile creases when he introduces himself. "Oh yes, I am quite fresh. Just thought that I might take a look around, see the sights."

Follow her intuition to modern marvels such as Mr. Valentine here.
synthedick: (♦ headhunting)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's detective," Nick remarks gruffly as he lets out an audible sigh, his brow knitting with mild, visible annoyance. Her comments remind him a little of Cr. Gottlieb, though in place of genuine misunderstanding is curiosity laden with condescension. She hasn't mistaken him for a "feature" of the city, though what she is saying isn't much better.

"It seems a lot of the newcomers aren't getting phones like those of us who've been here a while," he continues, "so if there's anything I can do for you, let me know."
witnesses: (i'm walking behind you)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-02 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He even takes offense, it would seem. IV personally wouldn't know what that must be like, having never experienced a hurt pride before -- even during her less 'dignified' moments. She can only process the scenarios and the necessary responses, but that is hardly the same.

"Phones? Those archaic little things? Please. I can do without. The network here is a joke."

Despite her manner of dress, she is from a much different time that is beyond the use of cellular devices. Again, it's all aesthetic. It's always been about aesthetics. Looking the part, playing the role, and dancing to the tune of this devil's orchestra.

At his offer, her eyes just light up with hunger, more like an inquiring child than a synthetic woman who is nearly a century and a half old. "Anything?" She steps forward, studying the detective's features. "Then tell me, Mr. Valentine, how do you feel?"

While she can dress human and act human, she isn't human, neither will she ever be. Not until she figures out what makes an artificial soul. Perhaps there is more that she can take from this place. More that she can learn.
synthedick: (♦ the devil's due)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-03 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Looking the part and playing the role: Nick and IV could get along on that line if they weren't so unknowingly opposed on others. He doesn't move as she gets nearer to him, scrutinizing his features with those artificial eyes of hers.

"How I feel is tired of being treated like a damn novelty rather than someone trying to help you," he answers honestly, his voice low as his own gaze falls upon her, those yellow eyes of his hardening ever so slightly. "You know what I am, and I have an idea I know what you are, too. You can drop the act."
witnesses: (smoke! smoke! smoke! that cigarette)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
"You're no fun," she pouts. It's a natural lie; she is actually quite enjoying herself right now. "I do believe that this would be the point in the narrative in which I would declare, 'We're not so different, you and I.' Save, of course, for the fact that I still have most of my face!"

IV laughs at her own humor, but it's hollow and devoid of joy. There is something definitely missing in that smile of hers.

It's empty, as is her gaze when she graces Nick with a more earnest look. "Nevertheless, I guess you get a passing grade, but you fall a little short on the 'act'. I am quite myself, you see."

If she were acting, if she were trying to be more human, she would not be nearly as manic. More of the intellectual that the esteemed Theora de la Vega was.
synthedick: (♠ getting technical)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-03 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
While Nick has made plenty of lighthearted remarks about the state of his synthetic body, he's not laughing this time. He raises an eyebrow as he keeps watching her, a little puzzled by her emotionless chuckle, unsettled by her impassive demeanor. She doesn't seem as information-driven as EDI, nor is she as obviously mechanical as himself or Oscar. If someone made her to hide among humans, they did a poor job of it with her personality, unless they were going for an eccentric angle. After all, there are plenty of regular flesh-and-blood folks who are odd enough in their own right, molded that way through their genetics and experiences.

Of course, that's all conjecture. She's from another world, so she could have been made for any number of things, ended up in her current state in one of a thousand different ways. Maybe she's doing as she's told, or maybe she's got free will, like he does. Maybe she's a prototype, maybe she's the finished product, maybe she's a weapon, maybe she's a glorified toaster. Whatever she is, she's an odd duck, and he'd rather find out more before making any judgment calls.

Or calls to Rey to warn her there's another synth in town, for that matter. Hopefully, Oscar is doing better since his run-in with her.

"Are all synths like you, where you come from?" he asks.

There it is. the magic S-word.

"I can assure you, there is no one like me."

It's more of a blessing than a form of self-flattery. If there were more synthetics like IV, the world would have a significantly bigger problem on their hands. Well, bigger than the issues she has given it already, spending as long as she has orchestrating many of its wars and conflicts. Atrocities that would have no doubt haunted the hearts and minds of those capable of a conscience.

Funny. Sometimes, she almost envies those that do. Until she just considers herself similarly blessed being made the way she is. Not tarnished by human hands, but by her own 'God'.

He's heard that answer before; hell, he's said it about himself a few times. No telling if that's actually true anymore, given there are other worlds out there, and maybe a brother he murdered. He keeps his eyes on her, continuing his questioning.

"Then what are you? If you don't mind me asking."
witnesses: (how high the moon)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-03 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Ask away, Mr. Valentine, by all means. I've nothing to hide." Except maybe a few things, or almost everything. She's still trying to gauge this one. He certainly isn't an empty vessel, and it's very possible that he possesses an animus -- a mind of his own. And that is what intrigues her. But IV also recognizes that the only way to get her answers is to indulge him in his questions. So she'll play, for now. "As for what... I am the warden of the sky prison over Concordia, and but a humble apostle of the GRIGORI."

To humans, she wouldn't ever consider herself to be a devout fundamentalist. But the truth is, everything she has done she did for her creator. To assure His place on the planet.

Want to hear about her robot Lord and Savior, Project G? Of course you do.
synthedick: (♣ the big dig)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-03 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Nick leans on his cane a little more, placing his bare hand over the one with synthetic skin. He watches the way she moves, the way she watches him, gauging this strange woman as she does the same to him.

"You're gonna have to explain some of that. Different worlds and all."
witnesses: (cold cold heart)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-03 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
That would answer some things. IV is already aware of the fact that they come from different worlds here, which is a novel concept on its own. Let alone other worlds bearing beings of similar design to her!

A flicker of reverence flashes in IV's otherwise vacant expression, when thinking about the entity that brought her into being.

"I was the first of many," she says, slipping a hint of emotion in her words for show. Drop some symptoms of the humanity in her that isn't, and never was, there. "The first true synthetic, and the very first synthe to have been brought to life by an artificial mind. A machine, if you will. That is who, and what, I am."
synthedick: (♠ getting technical)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-03 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Is that what you want to be?"

It's a question he's asked himself, that he's asked other synths. He's asked Rey, will probably ask Oscar. Now, he asks this strange woman before him.
witnesses: (hard headed woman)

[personal profile] witnesses 2016-11-03 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it truly matter what she wants? Perhaps. IV, and many of those like her, are full of wanting. Wanting something that you can't have is enough to even drive a synthetic mad.

"I have no qualms with what I am, and I do not wish to change that. I only seek to grow."
synthedick: (♠ duty or dishonor)

[personal profile] synthedick 2016-11-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
He cocks his head to the side as he looks her up and down. Lots of implications there. Grow as a -- figurative -- person? As a race of people to be recognized as any human would? In power and influence?

He has his guesses as to which it is. "And how do you go about doing that?"
