Event Log: Dead Ringers

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Dead Ringers event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 25th
Warnings: Evil doubles, so we can assume manipulation, violence, murder, and maybe some nasty words

Everything seems normal on the morning of the 16th - actually, everything seems normal about the city for the entirety of this event. Nothing is strange, nothing is obviously wrong. Well, except that the population has mysteriously doubled, and the new residents each look exactly like one of the old residents. So weird! Definitely not ominous at all.

At least until your new double gets down to business. After all, their only goal is to ruin your life, and that can take any form. Smashing your favorite coffee cup? Telling your worst enemy they're right? Kissing someone else in front of your girlfriend? Brutally murdering you and then hiding your body in a closet so they can more effectively destroy your life? The possibilities are truly endless, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill your double first. They're not really open to negotiation, after all - but they sure might pretend to be in order to trick you.

So watch your back, and try to make sure that really is your best friend and not an evil clone masquerading as them. Boy, that would be awkward. If you can stick it out until January 25th, good for you! But if you didn't manage to and your double survives until the end - well, just as a final 'fuck you', there's a chance you'll come back to life and remember every awful thing your double did. Hey, at least that'll make it easier to fix, right?

► This log covers January 16th-January 25th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your evil clone happens to take you out, please let us know here, and remember that you will not revive until the event is over.

Things hadn't gone according to plan, and much like the original Carlisle, that makes the false Carlisle absolutely furious. He'd had it all figured out in his mind: he'd murder his counterpart, demoralize Glacius and destroy their camaraderie, then do whatever he could to convince the people of Hadriel that the original Carlisle is a danger to their little city. He is cursed, after all -- he deserves to be treated like it. Can't be allowed to get too cozy in this little hole, now can he?

And then things had gone wrong. The 'demoralizing Glacius' part had been fantastic... but ultimately a waste of time, and all because Carlisle, the failure of the Longinmouth line, turned out to be magnificently inept at one more thing: dying.

And so his double, after being tossed into the street unconscious by Glacius, picked himself up and went straight for the last part of his little agenda: finding someone to do some dirty work for him. He'll start with destroying his counterpart's garden, or perhaps some of the refurbished stores. Emily would love to find her little sewing shop in pieces.

Or on fire, he reconsiders as he spots his target, fighting to subdue a devilish grin that crosses him.

"Miss Rey!" he calls to her as he runs over, unaware of the bruise he's sporting from his being pummeled by an icy alien. "Miss Rey, I need your assistance!"

By now she's catching on to what's happening, so when she sees 'Carlisle' approaching, Rey almost immediately goes for a knife. Far as she knows, he is someone that she can afford not to worry about staying within close range to warrant a gun, as well as a waste of a perfectly good bullet

Far as she knows, being the key detail here.

The shit part is, for all the help that Carlisle has given to her, she can't help but feel at least a pinch of consideration. He has healed her twice, and she hasn't offered much in return. Maybe she can change that now.

"What is it?" She notes the bruise, and wonders if he's had an altercation with one of the many menaces that have been creeping higher in numbers as of late.

She's receptive. Good. Very good.

"What is it? What do you mean what is it? There are some form of mimics in the city, parading around with our faces, including mine!"
circumitus: What could possibly go wrong? (11% beer and firearms)

[personal profile] circumitus 2017-01-27 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and? is the look Rey seems to be giving 'Carlisle' right now. The point he makes is good, but there's also no telling whether he's the original or not. Just like how he can't tell if she's the original...

Well. Not unless he was really Carlisle himself.

"So, what do you want? Am not going to kill random people because they might be someone's mimic."

Though when some of them seem more inclined to kill her, such was the case with Firo's doppelgänger, it doesn't take a genius or a magical test to figure things out.

"I don't need you to kill some 'random people,'" the false Carlisle says, as though the idea were preposterous. "Very specific ones, perhaps, but not random."

He... might be serious about that.
circumitus: (goddammit you're a loose cannon)

[personal profile] circumitus 2017-01-28 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse you, 'Carlisle'. Rude.

"You better have good reason, and some compelling evidence. Am not going to be your personal hitman."

He does seem pretty sincere about his wanting her to kill for him, though. Which is odd. While she can't say she knows Carlisle that well on a personal level, he never struck her as the type to casually will for the deaths of others. Put them in harm's way, maybe.
tongueamok: (➣ i'd rather not)

[personal profile] tongueamok 2017-01-28 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I do have reasons, I'll have you know," he cuts back, the look in his eyes darkening. "But it's really none of your business, now is it? What is your business is that I went to great lengths to heal you, and you're going to do this for me."

And he doesn't seem like he wants to take 'no' for an answer as his fist curls, his fingers tightening with the rest of him.
circumitus: Why was that not a good enough reason to put me to bed? (threw a jar of pickles at a police car)

[personal profile] circumitus 2017-01-28 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Was that an order? Because it sounded like it was supposed to be an order. One in which Rey is none too happy to receive from Carlisle. Or 'Carlisle', for that matter.

"No, you don't get to play that shit. Especially not with the way things are right now," Rey snaps. With how there is no telling who is a double and who isn't, she isn't going to mindlessly assassinate anyone without knowing for certain.

Otherwise, he's no better than Rage, who had intended to use her as a gun for the gods' own empowerment. The thought makes Rey sick to think about.

The other Carlisle looks peeved, his nose wrinkling as he eyes Rey with absolute disdain. He failed to fool Glacius into thinking he was the real thing; he refuses to be a failure here, too. That is where he and his counterpart, the inadequate whelp of the Longinmouth line, will differ.

"I wasn't asking you to do this," he hisses. "That wasn't a question, up for debate for a tool."

His eyes narrow, those slate eyes of his aglow, alive. Burn this place to the ground, Miss Rey.

It's clear to Rey now what that girl who had shown up with the throng of visitors a few months back was talking about. What made Carlisle such a threat despite his bumbling, nervous demeanor that made him seem more benign than he apparently was.

Only it doesn't seem that he is making this demand out of desperation or self-defense. There is no fear in those words he utters and that expression he holds. Certainly does not belong to a man who has babbled on and on about 'making amends' with people he feels he's wronged.

This is something more sinister. And something she has come across already.

"No," Rey flat-out replies, once she realizes that she feels no inclination to submit to the double's demands. Why that is, she doesn't know. But she isn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

As she denies him, the other Carlisle's nose wrinkles, a shade of confusion coloring him. It doesn't feel as though she's fighting him -- it's more like his compulsion has nothing to take hold of, nothing to grasp. He knows she has some metal parts in there, having felt them when healing her, but she is mostly alive, isn't she?

"No?" he barks, fury rising. "What do you mean, no?! I said to burn this place down, and you're going to do it!"

As his outrage grows, so does Rey's suspicions. She arches a brow at his peculiar response.

"No," she repeats, even more bold than her last response to his order. "Am not going to be your tool."

She does notice that there is something going on with 'Carlisle'. Not just the nature of his words, but his voice itself sounds different. Like he's attempting to do more than just demand this of her.

He is trying to make her do it. It wouldn't be the first time someone has tried, anyway. And that's what boils her blood even more.

For a moment, all she sees is red. Any conscious thought takes a backseat in her mind when she throws her fist back, before swinging it at the double's face. Snarling between her teeth, "Do your own dirty work, asshole."

There's no question now what gave him that bruise.
tongueamok: (➣ painful awareness)

[personal profile] tongueamok 2017-02-03 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
From the other Carlisle's irritation rises further uncertainty. She's responding as though she heard him and understood what it was he demanded of her, but he cannot feel her will bucking back against his, as one might when trying to dominate the mind of another. He tried twice, and to no avail. From that, he draws two conclusions:

1. He cannot control her for whatever reason
2. He's in trouble

He can tell the second conclusion is absolutely true as she swings at him; luckily, he sees it coming and steps back quickly enough to dodge, but he nearly falls over his own legs in the process, much like the real Carlisle would. Like original, like double.

The double growls, not willing to accept that thought. He's not a failure like his counterpart. If this tool is no good, he'll find another -- already, his mind reaches out subconsciously, looking for someone nearby who will either do as they're told, or help protect him from Rey, as he's not sure she'll let him go now that she has an inkling of what he's trying to do, what he's out to destroy.

Or he'll take a tool and an unwitting protector, if there's one out there. He's not picky.

It is unfortunate that this little hedgehog has two things in mind, help whoever might need it and, be damn fast about it. Like a moth to the flame, Carlisle's double's influence calls him from not so far away. The sensation is strangely familiar, but he pays no mind to it, he simply knows, feels someone might need him. He hurries, perfectly knowing where to go, perhaps that should've been the first thing to notice that wasn't quite alright... But for now, the hedgehog leaps from rooftop to rooftop at devil's speed answering the call.

He lands between the two of them, already acting as a shield for the man on the ground. Shadow looks behind him, briefly, and all he sees is Carlisle -- the man who saved his life once, the man who, despite all his faults, has been nothing but good to him -- how could Shadow not help him? Let's face it, Rey is mostly an acquaintance, the balance does not tip on her favor, influence or not acting on him.

There is no way for him to know what is going on, but his stance and the stare he gives Ray is already saying, 'you're not landing a finger on him'.

For some reason, it seems that the doppelgänger's plan isn't working on Rey. Rather than wasting time speculating the reasons why, she starts to approach 'Carlisle' for another strike--

And then a challenger appears.

No doubt either the 'tool' that the double was looking for, or an ally like the many others here.

"Are you k--" Rey stops herself, taking a step back before flinging a hand at the imposter behind Shadow. "He is fucking one of them."

Whether or not Shadow will believe her because of his own bias or because the doppelgänger's influence has more success here than it did on her, she'll find out in a matter of seconds.

Shadow appears, and just like that, the double finds that his luck is turning around. With Rey having visibly swung at her, she clearly seems to be the aggressor here -- it could be easy enough to convince the hedgehog to help him without any need for his magical influence. However, Shadow is not as blindly loyal to Carlisle as he could be: they've had their spats and their differences, the double knows. To seem too weak may not be the safest choice, and thus far, acting like his counterpart has gotten him nowhere.

So he goes for his true talent, instead. Though no hunter, the real Carlisle comes from a long enough line of them to know when to wait for an opportunity, to not spring a trap too early. It's better to lie in wait and ambush the target, catch them off-guard. He holds his frightened facade just long enough as Shadow glances back at him, but the moment the hedgehog's eyes are back on Rey, the double strikes.

He doesn't give Shadow a chance to prepare himself, doesn't allow any suspicion within him to breed. He has had his mind dominated before, and by the real clergyman, no less. It is easy enough to do it again.

"She attacked me for no reason!" he hisses, rising to his feet. "Stop her, even if it means you must end her."

One of them, she says. It should make an impact, it probably does, Shadow's brow furrows further, but it's just fleeting. That part of him that wishes to protect Carlisle aligns dangerously with what the double is asking, there should not be enough resistance for him to make him question his wishes.

And that's where the fake Carlisle is wrong. Having murdered Maketh's double in cold blood still made him question his very own existence. Who the hell is is he to decide who lives and who dies? He's certainly got the power to do so but, he wouldn't want to kill Ray, but... he needs to protect Carlisle. Same as he had to protect the rest of Hadriel from the imminent menace that the fake Maketh had become. Hah, if only he had been so altruistic, it had been his own thirst of vengeance which had blinded him to do the "right" thing.

It was the right thing to do!

Still, it felt wrong...

Still, he curls into a ball and launches himself towards Rey with a force and accuracy that could smash through metal and bone after a few tries.

Though Rey can take a lot of heavy hits, the sheer force of this speed tells her that this is one impact she is better off avoiding.

At least she's seen Shadow do this before. Back with the zombies. He'd detonated one of her lunchbox explosives. Stupid thing to get flustered over, but it was a waste.

If what she knows about Carlisle is right, then Shadow is only doing what is instructed of him. She'd rather not have to draw her gun on the oversized hedgehog, but she isn't about to make herself a target, either.

Everyone comes back eventually, right?

Mostly everyone, anyway.

"Son of a bitch," Rey hisses between her teeth. Her feet kicking out of the way of Shadow's speed. Moving into the air. The sole of a boot bounces off the wall of a nearby building before she snags a metal railing trailing along the side in one hand. With the other, she pulls out a pistol, and aims for a shot.

Between shooting Shadow or 'Carlisle', she'd rather keep her eyes on the two-faced dead ringer prize.

In good news for the other Carlisle, his original's adventures away from his world have granted him the knowledge of not only what a modern pistol looks like, but why he should avoid getting shot by one, as well. His eyes widen as he recognizes the device and darts for the nearest building, ducking for cover behind the wall.

He trusts his compelled protector will take care of her for him, but should his influence falter, he'll have to force another command upon Shadow and make him comply.

There is something akin anger in those crimson eyes when Rey takes the gun out, and it's got nothing to do with how he's being controlled. It is not a good reminder of how he lost someone dear to him. This time, however, he can do something about it!

Quick as ever, the hedgehog lands on his feet after missing his chance, he doesn't even bother to give her a warning, instead, he attacks her fully with a cluster of raw, radiant and incredibly destructive energy that comes form his hand.

"Chaos Spear!"

Take that, you creep!
