Event Log: Kissmas

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Kissmas event!
Where: All around the city
When: February 14th-February 20th
Warnings: Kissing! Ew! Snow! Fun! Ugly sweaters! Somewhere in between!

Thanks to Conner's meddling, Delight has decided that it's high time for another of her events- and this one has a bit of a romantic twist, so at least it's, uh, sort of holiday appropriate!

On the morning of the fourteenth, everyone will wake up to a fresh pile of snow on the ground. Unlike Fear's event a year and change ago, this snow is powdery and light and festive- though still definitely a bit cold! To help counterbalance this, there are also plenty of ugly sweaters stocked in various buildings to keep you warm.

In addition, some various sprigs of mistletoe will start appearing over random thresholds. These won't be limited to public places, however- you may find a few of them in your own home! Any two people (at some discretion of course) who find themselves underneath it will experience a strong desire to kiss one another- be it a platonic peck on the lips or something a bit more intimate. The compulsions can be resisted and laughed off of course, but that's no fun at all!

But the fun can't last forever! Extended Kissmas ends on the twentieth, and while the snow and mistletoe will disappear, our memories and ugly sweaters will linger on forever!

► This log covers February 14th-February 20th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you get, uh, smooched to death, then let us know here!

At some point during her city walk, Rey spots the familiar woman carefully stepping around the snow. It's a curious scene, seeing that Rey herself has no regard for trudging across the icy street wearing not even a coat to cover her arms. And yet she doesn't seem to be so much as chilly by the nippy weather.

This situation have been a different story in her world. By the time the Winter Wars became a global thing, some countries had developed technology to better combat subzero temperatures. Heatsuits were convenient that way, when her missions had taken her to the white wastes of Russia.

Not that such an accessory was something that Rey required, but still handy if you're human. But even she knows that it isn't cold enough to threaten even a normal person.

"You can walk on it, you know." Says the woman who's casually strolling around like it's summertime.

Marian's head jerks up at the voice, eyes wide. At least it's a familiar face this time, not some terrifying ice alien or skeleton. Although she never looks like she's gotten much in the way of sleep, the effect seems particularly pronounced today, bags under her eyes and despite her nervous behaviour, she's more easily surprised than actually alert.

"I-it's not a good idea," she says darkly, pulling the blanket around her a little more tightly. She's got one of those hideous sweaters on underneath too, but it doesn't seem to help her with the cold, apparently, since she's still shivering a little. She peeks briefly at her watch before looking up to Rey again. "What are you doing out here?"
circumitus: I CAN QUIT ANY FUCKING TIME I WANT. (i'm not drunk YOU'RE drunk)

Wow, Marian is almost as jittery as Carlisle. That's something Rey never thought she'd see.

"It's barely thirty degrees," Rey says with a raised brow. That's nowhere near arctic climes. "Just find some decent gloves and boots and you should be fine."

Yes, Rey is that asshole who thinks how great the day is when everyone else is miserably hot or miserably cold.

"As for being out here... What else? Am enjoying the weather while it lasts."

"There's nothing good about this 'weather'. It's wrong. Why would it snow inside a cave," she says flatly, less a question and more a point-blank refutation. "It's gone on too long already."

But it hasn't gotten worse over time, and as unnatural as it is, it's just snow ...she would like to tell herself. Try to tell herself. But even 'just' snow is enough to ruin a good 4th dimensional escape route, if not planned properly.
circumitus: If you can't drink cheep beer and whiskey with me, I don't want you. (fuck it)

"You're talking about a cave that is run by people who can convert it into a beach party paradise or an actual living nightmare, and you're confounded by snow?"

It really does seem like a no-brainer to Rey. She's stopped trying to make sense out of any of the stuff that goes on here because ooh, magic.

Marian missed the party paradise (she wouldn't have liked that much either), and she can only assume that by 'living nightmare' Rey's talking about the doppleganger event... or worse, prior.

"Not 'confounded," she snaps a little irritably, finishing lamely with. "I just... don't like it." Even if she way she was acting wasn't enough, there's clearly something else going on from the way she refuses to meet Rey's eye while saying that.

"Don't you have something better to do?" she mutters.

Much as Rey would want to believe that people are better off missing what they had, she also can't help but feel that it has conditioned her to this place somewhat. Made her better equipped at whatever is going to head their way once all the gods are back in the game. So maybe pity would be a more appropriate reaction to Marian's case.

"Not really," is Rey's immediate reply. "Why? Do you?"

Other than playing off a rather entertaining version of the Floor is Lava.

"Stockpiling food. Don't want to have to go out in ...this... again." And giving Rey a little bit of a dirty look in case she has any smart remarks to make about that, Marian adds, "Or the next time half the city catches fire."

Did she barricade herself in her apartment during the doubles event? Yes, yes she sure did.

What have you got against fire, huh?

Rey doesn't make any smart remarks this time, but she is curious.

"Do you usually just hole yourself up whenever shit happens?" Although Marian hasn't been around long enough to have experienced just how often shit happens, it does leave Rey wondering. Not much of a fighting type, is she?
einselective: (not this shit again)

"Not... there's not a lot I can do," she says flatly. Which is true enough. Sometimes she'd managed to help people, in those hours of chaos back on her world, but with the only special capabilities she had... time travel isn't an easy way to help anyone, let alone let them know you're trying to help.

"You're an engineer of some sort, aren't you? You can build things?" she asks, recalling not only their first meeting, but their conversation over the network. "You can always help with defenses. Something, anything. If war was fought with brawn alone, we'd still be throwing stones at each other."

She doesn't know much about what Marian specializes in, but Rey is confident that there is purpose for just about everyone here. Even someone as skittish and cowardly as Carlisle has his uses.

"Physicist. Even if... what, are you suggesting I help you make weapons?" Marian replies, incredulous and slightly horrified.

She solves problems, makes discoveries, contributes to the advancement of civilization... or at least, that had always been the idea. Fighting wasn't a real solution.
circumitus: ...it got messy. (i did a shot of seamonkeys)

[personal profile] circumitus 2017-02-21 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Not a whole lot of physicists in Rey's line of work.

She scoffs at Marian's presumption.

"Don't take the war analogy literally. There are plenty of ways to put yourself to use that don't involve combat." Pause. "Unless you can make weapons. Because that would be pretty useful."

Compared to the medieval shit they're stuck with.

"Sorry. Sorry, I'm just tired," she mutters. "No, I wouldn't know anything about that." As soon as the words are out of her mouth, the thought occurs to her that she doesn't know, not really, what happens when the temporal waveform is distorted beyond recognition. That's been a line she hasn't wanted to risk crossing. And probably something well well past the idea of 'weapon'.

She stares at the snow line just outside the shop's awning rather than Rey. "But if there's... anything useful, civilized, anything that you think people here would need that I could help with..."
circumitus: We know how you feel. (kid you're lost in the wheel)

[personal profile] circumitus 2017-02-25 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
'Civilized' is hardly a term that applies to much here, for a place that has intended to draw those leaning towards chaos and evil. She blinks at Marian a moment, thinking on this -- and other things.

"Some help with a backup generator might be useful," Rey finally decides. "What we've got now supplies the city with the most minimum power necessary to supply the living areas with light, but it wouldn't be enough if anything happens to Hope or if he decides to cut his losses one day."

The latter she doesn't worry about so much as the fact that something could happen to him. The gods were killed before, and he's supposedly the only one capable of bringing them back. If he ever checks out, then, well... they're going to have a few problems.

"Yes. Yes, that... sounds eminently reasonable. Maybe after the snow is gone..." If it stops. For everything Marian's read, this is probably a brief phase, there's no logical reason to just assume it has anything to do with her own past, and yet the feeling of dread is just overwhelming, staring at the white flakes as they drift down.
