INTRO LOG: WELCOME TO THE BATCAVE

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for January.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: January 10th-15th
Warnings: Bats, but not Batman. Weird arts and crafts. Confused newbies.

You awaken on the hard-packed sandy floor of the colosseum. As you blink the sleep from your eyes and begin to try to get your bearings, you might hear the gentle, soothing sound of wind chimes tinkling through the air. It's a peaceful sound, a pleasant sound. As you look around, you'll find tall stands with curved hooks at the top here and there throughout the arena, each supporting a different handmade wind chime.

You could stay and enjoy the sounds, even if what they're coming from is a bit less than aesthetically pleasing. Or you could pause for a moment and wonder where the wind that's sounding the chimes is coming from, considering you're in a cave. There are breezes in Hadriel now and again, but what's causing this wind is something else entirely. Spend too long out in the open and you'll find out what.

Perching atop the broken walls of the colosseum, hidden in crevices and shadows, are a number of Ahools. These giant bats can have wingspans as big as 12 feet, and they're certainly strong enough to lift smaller and lighter people off their feet entirely, carrying them away to devour at their leisure. Don't think you can hide - their echolocation will find you as easily as a bat finds a moth in the black of night.

If you manage to escape the Ahools and get your bearings, feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies until your belly is as full as that giant bat's was supposed to be. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers January 10th-15th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well!
► All characters now arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

Rey | Open!

She wakes up in the underground, to the ring of chimes over another type of ringing in her ears.

Slowly, she blinks through her bleary sight, her head aching. When her eyes dart towards her peripheral vision, she catches sight of a doll head over her, with various rusty silverware and metal pieces dangling from it. It's hardly a pleasant image, but she has seen much worst.

The last thing that comes to mind was that she had been crawling through the narrowed tunnels of a prison ship. That's where her memories before coming here end. At the very least, she has found herself waking up in a strange place with memories intact at all, but it's hardly a consoling revelation. Had she somehow been found by the synthetics that took her brother already? Did she already fail in her mission?

Shifting to sit upright, Rey brings a hand to her head and mumbles something incoherently to herself. Where she finds herself is not the metal walls of the prison, but in what appears to be some sort of natural cavern. She searches for any other sign of life as she climbs to her feet, finding the strength and will to move around.

Not daring to call out at the risk of drawing unwanted attention, she ventures into the caverns on her own. There's a possibility that she'll find herself accidentally bumping into someone by chance, somewhere in the dark, and a muttered apologies is bound to follow.

While Rey is on her way out, someone else is on his way in. Armored and armed, when new people show there is often a rush of monsters as well, not to mention new people who have no idea how to fight monsters. That means time to don the weaponry and go in to act as rescuer.

Rey is quiet enough that Rainier almost collides with her, stopping and taking a precautionary step back at the last moment in one of the maze of hallways that lead to outside from the main arena of the colosseum.

Well as close to 'outside' as there gets when there's one giant cave you're all in.

"Apologies," she... does not appear to be freaking out? That's new? Maybe she's not actually new and Rainier just hasn't seen her before.

Newbies tend to be freaking out a bit.
circumitus: Keep up the good work. (it's a 12/12/12 miracle)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-01-11 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Rey is more of the 'figure shit out first' crowd than she is prone to freaking out. And if anything did come her way, then she was at least equipped to handle it. Although she currently appears to be unarmed, she's donning a peculiar armor with a hood around her shoulders, and a pack strapped at her back.

Ignoring the man's puzzlement shortly after nearly colliding with him, Rey gets right down to to heart of the matter she is most concerned with: "Do you happen to know the way out of these caves?"

For all she knows right now, this could be part of her own world. It wouldn't be the first time she's blacked out and woken up somewhere strange, in any case.
theresolve: (Believe you're capable of better)

[personal profile] theresolve 2016-01-12 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright, just a level-headed newbie it is. Rainier shakes his head, looking out towards the main cave.

"There doesn't seem to be one. Smaller caves branch off the main one, but whatever nasty monsters show up when we get new people tends to run into them. There's no light at all, no way of knowing if they go farther up or down and we don't have the numbers for a proper venture attempt right now." So, you can go ahead and give it a shot if you want, it's your funeral but your decision.

"There's food, water, and shelter enough for plenty out that way though." He gestures towards the main hub of stocked shops, past that are the housing developments, not to mention the spires.
circumitus: Because you're marine grade... You rascal. (you need 400 proof or marine proof)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-01-12 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The mention of monsters doesn't even have Rey all that surprised. She's seen her fair share of things that weren't human recently, or things that were twisted from human into something else. Depends on your perspective, probably. There were also things that could be described as 'monsters' in the underground city, back in her own world, so the whole prospect of being sent somewhere else doesn't register to her quite yet.

Either way, her brows raise in dull surprise at the mention of things that should otherwise be alarming to a normal newcomer. Losing her shit doesn't become someone like Rey, though.

"Finding light won't be a problem." Not when you're a walking torch, that is. "But what is this place, exactly? Never seen a sector like this in the AUC."
theresolve: (Believe you're capable of better)

[personal profile] theresolve 2016-01-14 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"It doesn't appear to be anywhere on Thedas, either." Rainier said with gruff disapproval at the shenanigans they have found themselves subjected to. He appreciates someone who understands that panicking won't help an already shitty situation, though. "Me and mine have been here... three months now? About that. Our mostly absent hosts call this place Hadriel, they only seem to speak up to fuck with us."
circumitus: I ONLY KNOW HOLA. (EVERYONE IS SPEAKING SPANISH)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-01-14 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thesdas. That's a word Rey can't say she's all too familiar with, either. She squints at the man before giving him a once over. He isn't dressed like anyone she's met. Even his armor is different, not as advanced as some of the ones she's seen in the armory of the underground facility she had only recently absconded.

"Hadriel?" She makes a face. This just keeps getting odder and odder. "What do you mean by that, 'hosts'?"

She doesn't literally bump into another person, but the Inquisitor does approach. Cecily had come out, as usual, to check over the inevitable wave of new arrivals, to search for any of the others from the Inquisition, to see if anyone was injured. When people were drawn in, it usually also meant that a new breed of beast was out and about, which increased the usual amount of danger to an even higher degree.

The caves were always dangerous, but particularly on this day every month. It's why Cecily has her bow slung against her back (though, she usually does), and is on high alert when she spies the other person a short distance away. It's more likely that this is a newcomer, rather than a humanoid monster or demon, but it never hurts to be cautious.

"Have you just gotten here?" she questions, keeping a good amount of space between them, looking curiously to Rey. "I can help, if you have."

Better to be a solid mix of kind and wary.
circumitus: You can pick it up if you come down with ID... (i do believe we have a fire lady)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-01-11 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
For the moment Rey appears to be uninjured, but she also doesn't appear to be sporting any sort of weapon, either. She's quick to stop when the woman approaches, not because of feelings of threat but because she hadn't yet seen that many signs of human (or sentient) life up until now.

The weapon this woman has does appear to be odd from where Rey is standing. Bows and arrows are things of the long past, not something that she's seen too often in the mid-22nd century.

At the woman's query, Rey hesitates. She isn't certain how much information she wants to be giving out to people, and in this case, knowing so little can put her at a disadvantage. Then again, so can declining the offer of help. Eventually, she nods. "Am fine. Just need information." She pauses. "Any information."

For someone who knows nothing about their current situation, every little bit is one step towards figuring out how to get out of this place.

Not hurt, then. Just another confused soul stuck in their prison-caves. Cecily nods, glad that they'll have what seems to be a straightforward conversation without one of its participants being injured (it's usually the Inquisitor herself).

"There isn't much," she admits with a wry smile. "The gods Hope and Fear, and now Rage, have all the power in these caves. We were drawn in by an unknown artifact, or so they say, and no one has the power to return us."

Good to begin with so much positive news, isn't it?

"There are people from all over, from different places and even times." Or, so it's seemed to her, given how strangely some of them speak and dress. "The so-called gods draw power from our emotions, which is easy enough to sort out given their names. Hope is usually fairly harmless, but Fear... well. That's where the monsters come in."

You know, like the enormous bats that have been screeching up and around their heads today.

"So they have the power to draw us in, but they haven't figured out how to reverse engineer that ability?" Rey scoffs. "Some 'gods' they are."

It's just her luck to have been in the middle of a self-driven mission when these assholes pulled her in. They couldn't have waited until after she figured out whether she would end in success or a colossal failure. Her pessimistic concerns tend to lean towards the latter, but it would at least help to know.

Rey makes a face. All this talk of emotions and artifacts doesn't sit right with her. None of this does. "How do people know these are gods and not just kidnappers with high tech? Better yet, where can one find the assholes? Need to get back home to finish something."

"It isn't certain if they bring us or if it's entirely this... artifact." She scoffs, glad to hear the other woman holding a similar opinion, at least. "They seem to be more... spirits, than anything. Not gods."

The only god she knows has abandoned them all, theoretically, so He isn't much better.

"It isn't something that we know for sure." Cecily shrugs, beginning to walk toward the city, hoping it's clear that Rey should follow her to (relative) safety. "They may be exactly that. You can speak with them over the... network, they call it, but I'm not familiar with the technology, so I couldn't say exactly how."

There's a pause as she considers it.

"... Though, they each have their own temple. You may be able to call out to them there."

"What artifact?"

Rey isn't entirely sure about whether she'd consider them spirits, either, but it's a step up from calling them gods. Hell if she is going to dignify anyone in such a way.

Picking up on Cecily's cue, Rey moves alongside the other woman, having no problems with keeping up and talking at the same time. "So there's a 'net here as well?" That's interesting. "Am more curious how they managed to get it functioning so far underground."

Not that it isn't impossible, but -- if these so-called 'gods' are able to set up a network, who's to say they don't have any other cheap party tricks up their sleeves?

When she bumps into the teenage boy carrying a sword at his side, the boy who has ventured toward the colosseum - because he's heard that every month, people appear there and he wants to make sure they get out safely - there's a goodnatured tone in his voice. "Not to worry! You have not harmed me!" And because he's pretty sure that there might not be other people who have been here a while wandering the area besides him right now (of course he's wrong but he often is, although it has not discouraged him this far); "Are you one of the new people, perhaps?"

"'New people'?" Rey echoes as she regards the boy with a squinted eye. She then recalls a recent conversation she's had regarding her whereabouts now, and sighs. "Yes, suppose so. Am trying to find the way to these-- um, shelters, that someone talked about."

She still can't wrap her mind around how or why just yet, and had succumbed to the prospect that perhaps some things just are never meant to receive a straight answer. As maddening as that is.

The energetic disposition of the kid doesn't go beyond Rey's notice. She just blinks at him, straight faced for a moment before she considers whether or not she'd even want a guide in this place.

"Where are they, exactly?" If she can't get out of these caves, she may as well look into not sleeping in the middle of the outdoors. Not after seeing the things she has already.

Rhys wouldn't go near the Colosseum around arrival time if you paid him- well, maybe if you paid him a lot, but still. It serves to note, however, that he's still not entirely sure when arrival time is, and the arena of sorts is a little bit in the way between where he lives and where the shops are.

He's mostly in luck and doesn't manage to run into any giant carnivorous caterpillars or trolls on his way, but he does find himself running near a woman who looks... well, not lost, but not entirely sure of where she's going. A quick glance upward tells him that there's definitely something sinister up there, and as much as he doesn't want to wait around and see what it is, he's also a little intrigued by this person who looks like they could probably break him in half.

Mostly because Rhys is still hoping a little that she'll be friendly. One of his other powerful buddies has been MIA for awhile, and he needs more protection in this little cave of horrors. If she's not friendly, then- well, that's what the small sentry robot floating near him is for. Hopefully it won't come to that. Rhys doesn't actually think that it could do much, but at least it's here if he needs to threaten someone with it.

He waves with his robot arm a little awkwardly, motioning her closer, while still keeping his eye on the creature in the shadows of the arena above them.

"Hey. You new here?"

Not being one to start attacking people for no rhyme or reason, Rhys doesn't have anything to worry about. At least, not from Rey. She's aware that they're not entirely alone here, as she tries to move as stealthily out of the Colosseum as a three hundred pound killing machine is able.

Although she doesn't appear to be armed, she isn't entirely defenseless, wearing her strange black armor. Currently the hood is down over her shoulders, revealing a head of short hair and the meticulous scars on her face.

When she notices the stranger signaling at her, she approaches with caution. Not because she's concerned about him, but she follows his gaze overhead.

That doesn't look very good.

Squinting back at Rhys, Rey nods. "Suppose so," she says, still keeping her distance but within conversational reason. Whatever it is, she doesn't want to summon some unwanted attention for shouting over at another person.

The scars don't exactly spell out I've lived a life of peace and boring desk jobs, but Rhys supposes that beggars can't be choosers. Her armor is equally a little daunting, but Rey doesn't seem to be on the attack, so he relaxes a fraction- not dead on all sides, but there's still up above to contend with.

"I'm Rhys. Kind of new, not as new as you."

There's a pause, and he steps a little closer to her, most of his attention still on the bat that hasn't quite yet decided to pursue them as prey.

"I'll give you the rundown when we get to somewhere safe. Are you a tower or a hut kind of girl?"
circumitus: We're listening to the crystal method and doing bong hits for jesus. (how are you texting me from 1998?)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-01-19 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
As dangerous as the Colosseum must be, Rhys doesn't look like the type of person who'd come here to look for a brawl. Which begs to question what this guy must be doing here in a place like this. And she could well ask him this very question...

"Um..." She opens her mouth to speak, when behind her she hears the sudden sound of flapping wings.

Despite their discretion, the bat was swiftly roused awake, and sensed potential quarry.

Shit. As she Rey starts to turn around, one arm swings out to shove Rhys out of the way. The bat instead attempts to wrap its taloned claws around her other arm to carry her up into the air.

For a woman of her height and stature, it shouldn't have the amount of trouble it has trying to lift her up off the ground. Even with the armor, she should be relatively light. But the bat can hardly even drag her off her feet, because it's going to have a lot harder time trying to budge three hundred pounds.

"Fucking-- thing," she snarls through clenched teeth. Before it can decide to devour her right then and there instead, a burst of fire erupts from her snagged arm. The heat scorches the bat's giant feet, sending it into a flying retreat, screaming. Afterwards, Rey is clutching her once fiery arm, now returned to normal when she turns back to face Rhys. "Think we should get to somewhere safe," she echoes his last comment.

:o things!

[personal profile] hybridification 2016-01-20 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Rhys definitely does not shriek when the bat descends on the both of them, and he stays kind of frozen to the spot, like a deer in the headlights, which would have probably been the end for him, had Rey not shoved him (rudely) to the ground just in time for the claws to miss him.

He'd seen the bat before, sure, but he was half-convinced that the thing was just a looming shadow more than an actual creature, or like... at least really full or something. Getting right up close and personal with the giant rakk- er, bat- is definitely an experience that Rhys would never like to repeat again, but at least it's taking Rey instead of him, right?

Except... it isn't actually taking her at all. From where he's propped up on his elbows on the ground, Rhys watches the monster try and fail to drag her away, blinking at the sudden surge of fire and the wave of heat that hits his face. He's not entirely sure what is going on here, but the majority of him is in favor of getting out of here, along with a healthy dose of finding out what the hell that was all about.

"...your arm is on fire. Was. On fire."

Rhys laughs awkwardly, a sound that is definitely not based in humor at all as he slowly climbs his way back to his feet.

"Did you, uh. Did you know that?"
circumitus: its people like u that make people like me go to rehab. he has a lazy eye for christ sakes. (your girlfriend is a south jersey whore)

"Yes, it was. Now time to go," Rey retorts.

She hooks a hand over Rhys' shoulder, whirling him around to follow her as she marches out of the Colosseum. Hopefully he can be a walk-and-talk type of guy.

On the surface, she doesn't appear to be terribly injured. She checks her arm and her shoulder as she keeps up a brisk pace, making sure that the bat's claws didn't damage her armor. After all, she just got this suit; it would piss her off to have it damaged so soon before she even had the chance to make use of it.

"What would be a safe place to go that isn't crawling with those things?" Straight to the point. That's how she rolls.
