Event log: Buried Alive

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Buried Alive event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 19th
Warnings: Claustrophobia, starvation, premature burials, all that fun stuff.

On the morning of January 16th, half of the game's characters wake up to find that they are not where they were when they fell asleep. Instead, they're surrounded by a claustrophobic darkness, cheap satin cushioning, and an intense feeling of weight directly above them. Unfortunately, all of this adds up to the fact that your character has been buried alive.

Luckily, they'll have their phones, which can function as a source of light, communication, and hopeful distraction. They'll be able to talk to the other folks who are buried around the city, as well as their would-be rescuers. Thanks to Hope's timely post on the network, the rescuers know where everyone is, even if they're not sure who is buried where.

This is where organization, planning, and a little bit of luck come in! The aboveground characters will be supplied with shovels via the armory and are encouraged to go dig up their buried friends. Dig quickly though, because the air supply is pretty thin, and by the morning on January 19th, the characters who are not yet dug up will find that oxygen deprivation is a rather unfortunate way to die.

So, grab your communicator, grab your shovel, and get to work!

► This log covers January 16th-January 19th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► Please remember to report any deaths to the Death page!

nick rivenna; getting dug up by ronan lynch at some point 8c

[personal profile] bekommen 2016-01-16 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nick wakes up in the dark and immediately senses there's something wrong, but she doesn't actually place what that wrong is until she tries to sit up and knocks her forehead on the wood above her. From there, it's not hard to piece together the rest of the picture, even in the dark.

And she does what anyone would do in her situation. She panics. Screaming, banging her hands and kicking her feet against the coffin, ripping at the satin lining - all useless, of course. She doesn't have superhuman strength. She's stuck here, for the rest of her life, however short that will end up being. And fuck, it's unfair. After everything she's survived - eighteen years of living with her awful mother, Stanley Park and her Becoming, even all the assorted horrors of this place - to go out like this?

Nick hasn't felt this helpless in a very, very long time. When people in her life hurt her - her mother, Kennedy, Andy - she always got angry, and then she got defiant. She may have given up in one way, like trusting people or believing in love and friendship, but there was always a ruthless determination to survive on the flip side of it - leaving Winchester, leaving Chicago, setting out on her own. There's no escape from six feet underground.

Screams give way to sobs, and she hates this, breaking down, admitting defeat, being weak; it disgusts her, fills her with a flood of self-loathing. Even if no one else can see her, she knows, and she's the worst witness of all.

His shovel hits wood.

Ronan sags in a mixture of exhaustion and relief, his fingers relaxing just slightly on the handle of the shovel. This isn't the first person he's dug up, but hopefully it will be his last- and hopefully, the person inside still alive. He sets his shovel aside momentarily, leaning it on the edge of the hole as he crouches down, brushes the dirt off of the surface of the wood with bandaged fingers.

It's near the head of the coffin, he thinks- he can feel the top edge of the wood up near where the edge of his hole is, even if the rest of it isn't quite uncovered yet. Ronan has been digging evenly, creating large holes and slowly working his way down from there instead of just trying to get as deep as possible, so there isn't a ton of earth left between him and the rest of the coffin.

He raps sharply on the sliver of exposed wood, loud enough to hopefully wake up anyone who might be sleeping inside. Hopefully, it's Adam. Hopefully he can stop after this. He'd give anything for that.

"Hey- can you hear me!? Are you alive!?"

Nick hasn't been sleeping - who can, with the knowledge that going unconscious might be for the last time? She's too keyed up anyway, mind racing with thoughts about all the things in her life that went wrong, all the stupid decisions she's ever made. It's funny, how that's what her brain turns to in the dark minutes that seem to drag on to infinity. She isn't expecting to be rescued, doesn't want to allow herself the hope of it happening, but when she hears the sound of the shovel against the wooden lid of the coffin, she almost laughs at how overwhelmed she is with relief. She is going to be rescued after all.

The voice is muffled, so she doesn't recognize it, but does it really matter who it is working on the other side of the grave? She's almost free. "Yes! Yes, I'm alive! Get me outta here!" She bangs on the lid of the coffin with both hands for emphasis, in case her raised voice is somehow too quiet to be heard.

Ronan can't figure out who it is from the voice- her words are too muffled, but the excitement and relief is palpable- but it's clear that it's a woman's voice. Not Adam. Ronan lets out a long sigh and buries his face in his hands for a moment while she hammers and yells, frustration building up tight and knotting in his throat. As cruel as it is, there's the slightest temptation to just leave, save his energy, try another spot, but he's gotten this far, hasn't he? He's not quite such a terrible person that he'd leave her here, after everything.

"Hang on!"

He moves to stand fully then, trying to figure out the best way to tackle it. If the coffin is built for viewing, then it should have a latch and the top part will be able to open by itself. They would be so lucky. Otherwise, it would still require some more work, but luckily, Ronan has adjusted his digging to be somewhat even all the way down, making the rest of the coffin a few inches from being uncovered.

Once he manages to widen the visible area of wood on the coffin, it becomes clear that the whole lid is in one piece. Ronan tries to hold back a swell of frustration and digs enough around the visible latch near the head of the coffin so he can unfasten it. Impatient, he then shoves the metal part of the shovel in through the crack of it, trying to leverage enough to break the lid in half so that she can emerge without either of them having to wait to dig up the rest of it.

"C'mon- push it up, try to help me out here-"

"I'm tryin'!"

She doesn't need much in the way of encouragement - a few muted words is all Nick needs to start pushing on the coffin lid with all the strength left in her arms. She's not exceptionally strong, but somewhere, there's a reserve of strength she manages to tap into. That, plus the motivation to stop being buried, the spark of hope in the dark that she's one good shove away from freedom, have her pushing hard against the wood that stands between her and open air.

Luckily, the lid is a bit cheaply made, and it seems to crack and buckle under the combined pressures of Ronan's leverage and Nick's internal shoving. It starts to splinter a few feet down, and Ronan grits his teeth, pushing harder until the whole thing snaps and pops open, swinging back on the one remaining hinge attaching that particular chunk of wood to the coffin itself. Ronan catches it, pushes it back to let some light and fresh air into the coffin-

-and when he sees who it actually is inside, the triumphant look in his eye quickly turns cold again. He'd known that this wasn't Adam from the moment he heard her voice, but the fact that it's Nick is somehow even worse.

"Are you fucking kidding me?"

She's been through hell, he knows- the same kind of psychological trauma that Adam and some of the others are going through, and Ronan is cold and despises her, but he's not entirely the worst person in the history of the world.

So he sighs in the end, setting the shovel aside and reaching a heavily bandaged hand down to her to help her out of the hole.

"Come on," he says on a sigh, crouching a little so he could support her if necessary, "let's get you out of here."

Well ... shit.

Of all the people in this dumb place, the one person Nick least expected to be on the other side of that coffin lid was Ronan. Altercations aside, she didn't think about him much in general, but if she did, she would've thought something as charitable as digging up strangers and saving them from a slow, suffocating death would be something he'd consider beneath him, or at the very least, not worth his effort.

"Yeah?" Nick grits her teeth. As much as she hates feeling helpless, she hates it double that Ronan's the one seeing her like this. "You sure you're not gonna just shove me back down here once I'm up?"

It's tempting to tell him to just fuck off, and maybe if she weren't so worn out, she would. But she doesn't. No one is more surprised than Nick herself when what she does is take his hand and accept his help in climbing to her feet.

He rolls his eyes at the accusation, curling his fingers in a little do you want help or not sort of gesture. Either way, Nick grabs onto his hand and he helps her to her feet. This isn't his first time digging someone up, he knows the general weakness and whatever that accompanies being let out of a coffin you've been crammed in for a few days.

"You want me to?"

Ronan turns away from her, stepping up on the lip of the coffin to give him a little more space to heft himself up the edge of the hole, using what strength he has to lift himself out of there and get a leg up on the edge. From there, he turns back toward Nick, crouching along the ground and reaching his hand down for the second time.

"Rot in there or get up here. I spent most of the day saving your ass, so I'd prefer you not waste it."

Nick manages to bite back a since when does it matter what I want and once again takes Ronan's hand to climb up out of the grave. It just doesn't make any sense to her; he should have walked away when he opened the lid and saw her buried underneath. Why didn't he? They've fought twice before, and now he's helping her. Why are people so confusing?

Maybe it's not that people are confusing. Maybe it's just that Nick had formed an opinion, based on her limited interactions with Ronan thusfar, and now those ideas are being challenged. One thing Nick hates - and there are a lot of things she hates - is being proved wrong.

Nick grits her teeth once she's out of the hole and brushing traces of dirt off her clothes. Somehow, bringing herself to look at Ronan directly is too much to ask as she mumbles a muted "Thanks."

He has no lost love for Nick really, or any of the other people he's traded blows with. One would be hard pressed to label Ronan as a decent guy, but sometimes the veneer slips and hints a little to the kind of person he might have been.

You know. If he wasn't such an asshole.

"Whatever."

There's a pause as Ronan takes the time to inspect his hands since digging her up, his mouth set in a thin line. The bandages are bled through again, curled around the edges and filthy with dirt. He'd been of the mind to just point her toward the clinic and be on his way to the next hole, but he's out of supplies and needs to at least make a stop.

"Clinic's a few blocks down. That way," Ronan points, "I've gotta stop by there. Unless part of your Barbie deal is that you can heal yourself, you should too."

She should go to the clinic, maybe have someone give her a once-over. She's just been buried alive, for fuck's sake; that can't be healthy. At the very least, she should see to her fingernails, which are ripped up from clawing futilely at the inside of her coffin.

Nick shouldn't do what she does, which is snap at him.

"Look, Eric Draven, as much as I love my new nickname and your spontaneous growth of a soul, I don't need any more help, OK? I'm fine."

That gives him pause, and not quite because he's angry with her, but rather, because Ronan was born in 1996 and grew up on a farm and doesn't really care enough to be a movie buff, so he has no idea what she just called him. He's sure that it was supposed to be insulting, but without the frame of reference, it loses a little bite.

Still, it doesn't mean that he's going to be kind about this. Adam is still out there, underground somewhere, and the longer he stays here and chit-chats with her, the longer he spends not finding him. In the end, he rounds on her, his expression cold and lacking any semblance of the kindness that she thinks he might be demonstrating.

"You think I'm doing this to save you? I wasn't looking for you, and I don't give a fuck that I found you. Fuck off if you're going to be a bitch about this, I have other goddamn holes to dig."

As if to demonstrate, Ronan grabs at his shovel, bloody fingers tight around the wood of it. He's not holding it to threaten her- all he does is heft it over his shoulder and step around the hole he just dug, so he can go in the direction of the clinic.

Ah. That's more like it; Ronan's swift change in demeanor is more in line with what Nick expects from him. It's normalizing, reorienting, a platform on which she can find steady footing again in the wake of everything she's just been through.

"I'm a bitch?" She laughs once, darkly. She's heard that particular insult so often it's become a badge of honor for her, at this point. "Sure. You're one to talk, you know. The fuck is your problem, anyway? Pretend I care."

Ronan pauses at the question, glancing back at her, his mouth in a thin line. There's no reason for him not to be honest- he never lies anyway- and so he shrugs, scraping the toe of his worn shoe over a clod of dirt.

"I'm trying to find someone. You weren't him."

As if it really is that simple.

"Yeah? And what's your excuse for every other fucking day?"

Some part of her brain recognizes how hypocritical it is for her of all people to be complaining about someone having a bad attitude, but it's such a small part, easily pushed aside by the rest of her mind, the parts that rail against the idea of anyone else possibly being in just as much or more pain than her.

"Christ, you're a real piece of work."

Ronan sneers at the words, but he doesn't dispute them or really even seem that riled up by the statements. It's not like it's untrue, after all.

"And what does that make you?" There's a pause here and Ronan turns fully back toward her, his expression flat. He's not angry at what she's said, but he's annoyed for being held up like this, and so he lets out just a little bit of the truth as he sees it.

"Normal people roll their eyes and walk away. Only the other fucked up kids go gunning for a fight every goddamn time they see an opening."

Other fucked up kids.

Those words hit Nick harder than any punch Ronan's thrown at her so far. Not the kid part, because what is being an adult anyway, and not the fucked up part, because Nick is the first to admit she's exactly that, but other - that's the part that stuns her silent for a long moment. It's not an outright declaration of we are the same, but it's damn close, and it's something Nick unconsciously recognized from the first time she met Ronan but hadn't put into solid thoughts or words until just now.

Now, though, with the words hanging in the air between them, it's impossible to ignore. She huffs loudly and fixes an expression on her face that's halfway between a scowl and a bitter smile.

"Yeah, you got me all figured out, don't you. You and me, we're peas in a pod. Tight like braid." She nods once, a sarcastic punctuation of her statement. "We've already established that I'm a monster. That's what I am, and that's old news, kid." She shrugs, a nonverbal so what's your point?

Despite the fact that he'd just likened them, Ronan resents the way Nick refers to their similarities as some form of bonding- it doesn't make him closer to her and it doesn't make him any less likely to take a swing at her in the future. He knows the kind of person she is because he sees it enough in himself, but that doesn't mean that he likes it.

The monster comment slides past him, but the implication doesn't go unnoticed. He knows what he is. He may not have a freakish other form like her, but he knows what he's responsible for. Not all monsters go full on fucking Jekyll and Hyde. Most of them- the worst ones, in his experience- don't have an ugly face to point the blame at. It's just them. Just a person, capable of bloody deeds.

"Just because I know what you are doesn't mean I care. All I mean is, next time you think I've got a fucking problem, take a good look in the mirror before you start shit."

Oh, Nick has to laugh at that. Of all the fucking nerve.

"I tell you what, kid, it'll be a freezing fucking day in hell before I start taking life advice from you. You wanna talk about looking in mirrors first? Take your own fucking advice."

Maybe, Nick thinks, she should just stop wearing her Facade altogether. Maybe it would be more honest that way, if nobody ever mistook her for human again. Maybe then she wouldn't have to feel like such complete shit when people like Ronan got under her skin like he just did.

Ronan finally just shrugs- no skin off his back, though his frustration has been steadily rising since he dug her up.

"Whatever."

Which is his cue to finally leave. If Nick won't listen to his advice, then he won't give it. She can fall into another fucking hole, for all he cares.
