Hope

...well Wash certainly doesn't belong here.

He recognizes the woman's face, remembers the fight on the pier where she lost her helmet and grabbed hold of the edge of the dock. Can see in his mind Maine ripping the arm off her teammate (Rodriquez, he knows now from Sharkface's sketches) and offering it to her, waiting for her to take its hand before dropping her into the water. Wash hadn't looked over the edge but he imagined she would have sunk like a stone.

She'd thought it was a friend reaching out to save her. It had been the enemy, letting her fall to her death. Drowning was a terrible way to go, Wash thinks.

Her name was Chica. Wash remembers.

Sharkface screams for help. Looks right at him and screams for him to help, and Wash can't watch this. Sharkface isn't supposed to be here either, he hadn't been here, this isn't real, Chica is dead. Fuck, she's dead right in front of them now. There's probably no saving her.

He watches the other soldier struggle, and curses under his breath.

Rushes forward.

It's stupid and pointless but he drops to his knees beside them, swatting Sharkface's hands away and undoing the fastenings of Chica's armor, getting her chestplate off so they can do CPR.
