Event Log: Dust to Dust

Who: All characters participating in the event
What: The event log for the Dust to Dust event
Where: All over the city!
When: January 14th-17th
Warnings: A big ol' mess.

It starts off small: the wind picks up, particles of sand and dirt and dust begin to fill the air. You might not even notice at first, not until you have to wipe the dust off your windows to see outside. After all, it's been a long time since Hadriel has experienced weather, and it's never experienced a weather event not caused by the gods before.

But the gods aren't in charge of the weather now, and even if they could prevent this dust storm, they have way too many other things to do. So it's up to you to deal with it, and as the wind rises and the dust storm moves into the city, there'll be plenty to deal with.

Once the storm is at its peak, it'll be almost impossible to see outside - and it won't be safe to go wandering, either. Entirely besides falling and hurting yourself, if you aren't wrapped up well enough the particles in the air will abrade your skin. Love that sandpaper feel! Oh, and breathing? Yeah, better make sure your nose and mouth are covered, or else they'll be full of sand, too. Hope you've got some goggles stashed away to protect your eyes. Luckily, it won't last too long - 'cause you'll have plenty of cleaning to do once the storm is over.

► This log covers January 14th-17th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you foolishly get scoured to the bone, please let us know here.

[Nate doesn't know a lot about synthetic people, and therefore he has to wonder whether Nick has the sensors to feel the wind whipping grains of sand at Mach 3, or if the only thing that is affected is his insides. Somehow, even with the scarf and the glowing eyes, he still manages to exude that easy, old-timey movie charm.]

Was out here tryin' to help people who might've gotten lost.

[He yells over another gust, buffeted a little off-kilter. Nate straightens uneasily.]

I'm guessing you had the same idea.

And you'd be right.

[He shifts in his stance -- yes, his sensors can feel the wind and grit slamming against him -- and looks Nate up and down, his eyes bright even in the dust from the storm. Nate's outfit tells Nick that he knows how to handle himself in desert conditions, but the detective is also certain he would wander headfirst into trouble and not have a second thought about it, especially if he's out trying to help others.]

I'd tell you to get inside, but you've never struck me as the type to take orders. [It's not visible under his scarf, but he says that with a smile.] How about we look together for a while, just to make sure no one's stuck out here or holed up in the shops?
nonscriptum: like a pair of sexy Twilight vampires (we'll be home by sun-up)

[Nate? Wander headfirst into trouble without considering the myriad repercussions? Nick would be absolutely right to assume the worst.

He offers a begrudgingly sheepish smile, not that Nick can really see it under the scarf wrapped around Nate's face. Nate has never responded well to most authority figures, so when it comes down to it it's never really personal. He's anti-establishment by happenstance, and spent most of his formative years looking after himself.
]

Sounds good.

[It serves them both better to just go along with it, since there's a high chance that neither of them intend to go indoors any time soon.]

You get weather like this back home?

Storms, yeah. Not sand and dust in 'em so much as radiation, though.

[He cocks his head to one side before starting off in that direction, keeping his pace slow so he can keep up with Nate.]

Folks take shelter where they can, but let's just say I'd take a sandstorm over the rads the ones back home put out.
nonscriptum: cool motive, still murder (it was for treasure???????)

[Nate distinctly recalls Nick saying something about the state of his world not being ideal, but this is a whole...other...thing. Radiation storms? And people live around them?

The look he gives the synthetic man is torn between disbelief and genuine curiosity.
]

Uh. Remind me where you live again?

A place called Diamond City, back in the Commonwealth. The walls around the place keep most of the inclement weather out, but one step outside, and you're at the mercy of Mother Nature... or what's left of her.

[Which isn't much, given the whole 'radioactive wasteland' aspect. The bombs blew the greenery to kingdom come, and what remained didn't make it through the subsequent fallout. It's a surprise anything did, but life tends to be tenacious like that.]
nonscriptum: why doesn't everyone just drop their sandwich on the floor?! (no! you can do that?!)

[personal profile] nonscriptum 2018-02-22 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, right. Diamond City.

[The name makes it sound a Hell of a lot swankier than Nick is implying, that's for sure. The second part is new information. Commonwealth is a term that only applies to a handful of places in the U.S., which is why he looks a little...not confused, but thoughtful.

Kind of makes him wonder whether Nick is actually from some devastating, alternate future. Stranger things, right?
]

Which commonwealth? [He asks curiously.] Kentucky, Pennsylvania...uh, Virginia or Massachusetts?

SCREAM I THOUGHT I REPLIED TO THIS AGES AGO D:

[personal profile] synthedick 2018-04-13 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
[If one considers a city that's called a jewel, but is far from it, swanky, t hen that's news to Nick.]

The Commonwealth Wasteland, part of the old New England Commonwealth back before the war. It used to be Massachusetts, but I don't think anyone's thought about state lines in a long time.

[Kind of hard to think about borders when you're just struggling to survive.]

I'm from there.

[Nate says without thinking, mild surprise in his voice. It could be argued that he is from nowhere, given how often he moved around as a kid and well into his teens, but he was born there, at any rate. Spent seven years in St. Francis' Home for Boys.

That should count for something.
]

From Boston, I mean.
synthedick: (♠ taken for a ride)

[personal profile] synthedick 2018-04-14 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
[The storm around them doesn't stop, but Nick certainly does.]

No kidding?
nonscriptum: wow SEXIST ("man up?????")

[personal profile] nonscriptum 2018-04-16 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Nate almost continues walking without him, turning on his heel and swiveling back to meet Nick's surprise head-on.]

Yeah. [Comes the simple reply, accompanied by half of a shrug.] My brother has more of an accent than I do. We stayed there until I was about twelve. The orphanage was a little west of the downtown, somewhere between Fenway and Mission Hill.
