Event log: How Delightful

Who: Anyone and everyone!
What: Delight's resurrection.
Where: Throughout the city, starting in the bar.
When: March 23rd-April 3rd
Warnings: Partying too hard, poor life choices, underage drinking, the worst hangovers of all time.

On the morning of March 23rd, bright and early, Delight is resurrected. Her temple is restored, and her bar appears in the city. What does that mean? Well, obviously it's time to celebrate. We hope everyone brought their party shoes! From March 23rd to March 27th, the party will be mostly contained in and around Delight's bar, with an invitation from the goddess herself. But it won't be long before she decides that's just not good enough - gotta bring the party to the people! From March 28th to April 3rd, the natural light is dimmed and replaced with flashing colored lights, fireworks, and even a few disco balls. Loud music blares through the city, making it hard to sleep, and a wide variety of trouble is available to be gotten into.

Wanna drink away the pain of being trapped in a hellcave? There's unlimited amounts of alcohol of all kinds, and Delight will be happy to supply anything that might be missing. More interested in karaoke-ing your heart out? Hit up one of the jukeboxes. Enjoy gleeful displays of your own mortality? Here's a skateboard and a ramp, have fun. There's just about anything you could desire, as long as what you desire is to party hard and make bad decisions. And hey, if you find yourself getting tired, grab one (or five) of Delight's special energy shots. They'll eliminate your need for sleep, food, water, cure an oncoming hangover and immediately relax any sore muscles you've got for 24 hours per shot! There's no down side! (Except for all the effects coming back to hit you at once when the shot wears off, but whatever.)

After about a week and a half of tequila shots, keg stands, roman candle battles, tagging the city with free spraypaint, inappropriate party games, and balloon hats made to look like rocket ships (wait... that's not a rocket ship), Delight realizes everyone's partied out and starts to wind things down. On April 3rd, she'll clean up the city, removing everything except for a few remaining fireworks and disco balls, stored in her temple. Her bar will still be around, if you can stand to even look at liquor after all the poor choices you made. Otherwise, lay in bed and try to recover from your hangover while the city goes back to normal.

► This log covers March 23rd-April 3rd.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► Did you party too hard? Please report any character deaths right here!

(Newt's shoulders slump a bit and he's almost disappointed Chris doesn't really tell him what he does at home. Learning about things was probably one of Newt's favorite past times.)

What sorta things?

(At the question he just kind of awkwardly shakes his head.)

Not gonna lie, mate, back in the Glade we weren't preoccupied with entertainment. I suppose we mostly just drank Gally's drinks at night and had bonfires but that was bought it. Some of the guys would wrestle. Some guys had crafts they'd work on. I was second in command though so most of my time was spent making sure no one was being a complete idiot.

(He gives a large shrug and twists his bottle around between his hands.)

Here though...There's lots more time for that sorta thing. I hang out with Peter mostly. Or other people. Work on the garden, picked up drawing. Cook. That's bout it.

I um... I like computers, and my phone; it's kind of like the one here, just--

[Actually, he has it on him; it doesn't work, but some days he still puts it in his pocket on pure habit. Chris pulls it out of his pocket and extends it toward Newt in case he wants a better look at it; it's a sleek black iphone with a shattered screen, and it would still function if it had any battery charge but finding a charger for it hasn't really been possible here.]

Video games too, and the internet, and books.

[All things that aren't really things, here. He listens to Newt's response, curious; he doesn't know much at all about what Newt's world is like, or what he did before coming here.]

What's the Glade?

[He nods, considering that.]

There's uh... Definitely a lot of free time here. You started drawing? How's that going?

[He's not particularly artistically inclined, so he's curious.]

[personal profile] krangke 2016-03-28 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Computers are pretttttty cool. I barely remember them but I think I remember being pretty good with them.

(It'd make sense anyway. They'd been raised in a lab where the tech was as high and efficient as you could get. Newt takes the phone from Chris with a look of pure wonder on his face. It isn't often he sees relics from other worlds and it's at once interesting to him- even if it is broken.

He touches the screen and frowns, tipping it over and turning it all around.)

Doesn't work?

(He doesn't know what video games are though he's got a broad enough idea about the internet. As for books...)

I'd kill to read a real book.

The Glade's where we were kept inside the Maze. It was where we were kept safe and where we could sleep and eat.

(It was a nice enough place in theory but a cage nonetheless. He'd never been so naive as to think otherwise.)

Yeah. I didn't intend to. I kept making blue prints for things and thought I rather liked drawing, it was relaxing. And I like to think I'm rather decent. I think maybe before I was good at it.

(He looks down at his hand and flexes his fingers. It was a muscle memory sort of things. His sketches for the garden hadn't just been chicken scratch doodles but rather well shaded concepts easily understood and appealing to look at.)

[At that response Chris is pretty sure there's something big he's missing, but he isn't sure if he should pry or not. Newt's obviously drunk, after all, and there's a point where asking too many questions tips over from curiosity into taking advantage.

So he refrains, but mentally files the questions away for later.]

Nah, it's out of battery. I think it'd still work if I could charge it, though; breaking the screen shouldn't have screwed it up too bad.

[He hadn't actually realized he'd broken the phone until its battery had already died; he'd been really distracted, after all.

And ugh, more things he really wants to ask about. This one seems more obviously okay, though, since Newt mentioned it directly.]

What Maze?

[Drawing is not exactly what Chris would consider relaxing, but that's probably because he's not good at it and doesn't really like not being good at something.]

That's pretty cool. It's probably like, a really useful skill to have here too.

[personal profile] krangke 2016-03-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
(Newt was pretty drunk though he was also fairly willing to share sober. At the moment though he was currently staring at Chris's phone like it was some sort of Maze. His eyes harden and for a moment, Newt doesn't look drunk at all. It's like some sliver of clarity pops into his eyes and he tips the phone over a handful of times.)

I think I could figure something out.

(He says it with an odd brand of confidence that doesn't always come easily to Newt. Just as quickly as it had come, it melts away and he yawns.)

If you want anyway. I like figuring things out.

(He's looking all around the phone when Chris asks about the Maze. He doesn't look upset or angry that he's asked. Actually, he doesn't even look phased.)

S'where we had our First Trial. Put us in a Maze. Fifty or so boys. Plopped us in the middle of a Maze in this place called the Glade where we slept and had a community and all. But all around us was this giant mechanical sorta maze. Stretched for miiiiles and miles and miles and had monsters in it. We gotta- have to send the Runners in so they can try 'nd figure it out. Doors open at sun up, doors close about sun down. Maze changes over night. Course there wasn't really a sun. Place had a fake ceiling like Hadriel but we didn't know that til the end when we broke out. My best friend- my best friend from home solved the Maze.

(He sets the phone down rather delicately and looks up at Chris, blinking a bit warily.)

We were apart of an experiment is all. Uhhh see?

(He awkwardly twists himself around and there at the base of his neck was a tattoo typically covered by clothes that read:
PROPERTY OF WICKED.
Group A, Subject A5.
The Glue.

He twists back around to right himself out.)

Seeeems pretty useful here, yeeeup. But there's a lot of ways to be useful. I bet you're really good at something too, you know. Everyone's good at something. Kinda what makes people people I think.

[He doesn't miss that change, the sharpness in Newt's eyes and words, and it's interesting; he doesn't have anything to lose by letting Newt mess with the phone, so...]

Yeah, sure, if you want to. It'd be great to have it working again.

[It has music, and games, and some apps that probably won't be useful here but who knows; more personally it also has photos and emails and texts he wouldn't mind having access too again, if just for sentimental reasons.]

Just uh, obviously try not to press on the screen too much. They hold up okay enough even when they're broken if you're really careful, but otherwise...

[Chris has actually never broken one of his phones before, which is kind of amazing with how clumsy he is, but he loves his phones.

He is so not expecting that explanation that Newt gives about the Maze and is even less expecting the tattoo, and something Newt says prompts an echo of Ashley's voice to replay in the back of Chris' mind.

It feels like he's constructing this whole story for us... Then watching us run around, freaking out, seeing what we do, like it's... Like it's some sort of fucking experiment.

He shoves the memory away, focusing instead on what Newt had said, and it's just so... Horrific sounding, and Newt's so casual about it.]

I... T-That...

[What's he supposed to say?]

That's... R-Really sick.

[Geez. Some morbidly curious part of him wants to know more, but the rest isn't sure he should ask and is equally unsure if it's good for him to hear.]

I um... Most of what I'm good at isn't that helpful here, but some of it is, I guess.

[His skill with technology not so much, but staying calm in a crisis and being an excellent shot, yes.]

[personal profile] krangke 2016-03-28 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be very careful. I'd have to take it for a while. Would you be okay with that?

(He knows that the phone is from Chris's home and even drunk, he understands completely that that means this phone could be too precious to want to let go. Newt isn't invasive enough for that.

Truthfully, Newt's usually quite casual about telling people of the Maze. Sober, he's a little more bitter about it but overall it's just a fact of his life. There's far more sensitive topics he keeps private. Things like the reason behind the limp in his leg. The Maze? Not so much.

He's also grown more casual about it as time has gone by in Hadriel. He's told it enough times, having to explain his amnesia because he just doesn't get enough things people are talking about to blend in seamlessly anymore. Plus, he's pretty sure that dealing with the tunnels in Hadriel was going to be a lot like dealing with the Maze.)

Yeah, well. My world was filled with sick bastards. Those same assholes are the same reason I don't have any memories sept for the last three years of my life. Kinda a drag.

(He drops his head down into a palm and reaches a hand out to poke at Chris's knee. Newt's a pretty physical guy sober and drunk? He's just gonna find random ass reasons to swat and touch. Kid had no personal space. Specially if he saw you as a friend.)

I'm sure you got plenty skill, dude. Tell me what you're good at. I'll personally rate your usefulness.

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-03-28 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's fine. It's not working anyway, so...

[It's definitely precious but at the same time there's a sense of detachment, like the phone is from another life. He'd love to have it working, but he can also accept if something happens to it.

Chris is generally an open person himself, or at least he was, but everything involving the night on the mountain has been kept so guarded--other than the wendigos, which they'd had to explain last month--that it's kind of weird to hear Newt talk about something like that so casually. But people are different, and situations are different, and maybe it helps to talk about it anyway.

The comment about Newt's memory answers the other question he'd wondered about but didn't ask, though it raises others.]

So that's um... Why you're good at stuff you aren't expecting to be?

[His gaze shifts to follow Newt's hand as Newt pokes at his knee; he's jumpier than he used to be, but as long as he's not surprised by contact it doesn't really bother him at all. The suggestion about listing skills gets a small laugh and a shake of his head, though it isn't actually in disagreement.]

I'm uh... Good with electronics. Not all that useful here, for you know, obvious reasons.

[Being that the type of electronics that are here are definitely not the kind from home.]

But I am like... A really good shot.

[He's never missed, actually, though actually acknowledging that would sort of set him up to fail so he tries not to think of it that way.]

(Newt nods a bit excitedly and stows the phone away for later.

The thing with Newt was that his time at the Glade was literally all he knew. They were the only memories he did have and so being selective about sharing that was nearly impossible. Just about all questions pertaining to 'where do you come from, what's your life like back home' can't really be properly answered. He learned really quickly that his situation was odd. He couldn't even really seem to explain that he lived with only boys, that none of them were actually adults, that he was partially in charge of them. That alone raised questions. That he didn't know his parents, didn't actually know his name, his age.

In other words, some things just had to be explained.)

I guess so. Stuff can be like- just in your hands more than in your head, you know?

(Muscle memory. It is a bit frustrating to deal with when he knew he knew what he was doing but felt like there were a bunch of missing holes. Whatever. He had all of the time in the world in Hadriel to figure it out.)

Electronics are very good to be good with. Sucks they're not too big here but that doesn't mean it's useless. There's still like. Stoves.

(That wasn't really what he had meant to give as an example but he's drunk so he's allowed a pardon, maybe.)

Like with a gun?

(Now this earns a nod of approval.)

That's really helpful, Chris. In case you didn't notice, there's a whole buncha monsters here. That kinda skill is the kind of skill that keeps people alive.

Yeah. There's uh... A lot of stuff like that, I think.

[Riding a bike is of course the classic example of something that's muscle memory more than anything else, but he's been noticing more and more mundane things that can be done on autopilot lately.

He offers a small grin at the mention of the stove, amused, because his skill with electronics so doesn't translate to the stove.]

I totally can't cook. Ashley's figured out how to use the stove, though, so we've got that covered.

[He shrugs a little, glancing away for a moment, then back.]

Yeah, I guess so.

[Newt's definitely right in that it's really useful when it comes to fighting monsters; it's one of the few skills Chris is really glad he has in this place. But it's also one that really drives home how different things are now.

Still, he's too practical to let that stop him, because the reality is that yes, it's important here. It saved his life on the mountain and it could save him and his friends here, even if the idea that fighting monsters had become so commonplace is terrifying on some deep level.]

We're um... Limited on bullets, but yeah. Good for an emergency, at least.

[personal profile] krangke 2016-03-29 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
(Newt can't help but to snort a too-loud laugh. Being drunk was a great thing, clearly.)

I didn't mean cookin'. I meant like. Electrical work. Guess that's not what you're talkin' about though.

(Newt frowns a bit at Chris's reaction but the frown smooths out. He understands well enough. Newt himself isn't much of a violent person. Honestly, attacking some of the monsters in the cave felt wrong. He didn't like to hurt animals and some of the monsters like the bears and those cat things...They were a lot more animal to him than they were "monsters".

But then there were the grey children and smokers and those weren't as hard to kill because nothing about them was animal or human.)

That's mostly why I wind up usin' spears and stuff.

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-03-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Yeah, no, that's uh... That'd be more helpful.

[He can do wiring and such in computers, but that's about it; he'd considered engineering for a major, but decided he was a lot more interested in the programming and logical side than actual hands-on stuff. Too bad hands-on stuff would probably be a lot better a skill to have here.

To be fair, it's not like he could've ever expected to end up in a place like this.

He raises his eyebrows slightly at the mention of using a spear, partially because he's impressed and partially because he's surprised. He hadn't really pictured Newt using any sort of weapon, let alone a spear.]

That's... Pretty cool, actually. I think I'd just hurt myself if I had like, a spear or a sword or something.

[personal profile] krangke 2016-03-30 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
(Newt shrugs a bit. He's got nothing else to offer up. Especially when he can barely remember anything about technology that would be of use.

Who ever did? Okay, so, Newt actually was convinced this was another Trial for the first month he arrived. It was way too similar to his life so far so it wasn't a surprise for him but as far as everyone else was concerned, yeah, totally.

Funny how most people didn't. The kid was a gentle sort admittedly but he'd also come from a pretty violent world. Didn't outlive that sort of thing without resorting to violence a few times yourself.

Newt winds up smirking just a tad. He wasn't expecting that compliment and he'll totally take it.)

I had a machete mostly back where I came from. Which sounds more badass than it was. It was handy for gardening but if I had to I could use it to knock out someone who uhhh-

(Wait a second there. He twists his mouth shut for a moment and okay. So certain aspects of his home life were easier to talk about than others and this was one of those others where he didn't like talking. He's drunk enough to be clumsy and he stares up at the colorful sky for a moment to collect himself.)

Anywhoooo. Spears are easy. It's all about balance, yanno? They're good though cause you can use them long range or up close 'nd personal. And they're not so bad for blocking and knocking things down either. Can use 'em to vault around. Talk about a multi-use weapon.
thechoiceisyours: (★ ᴡᴇ'ʀᴇ ʙʀᴏᴋᴇɴ)

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-04-01 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
[It's really impossible to miss that there's more story there, but it's also clear Newt isn't as interested in talking about it as the other topics. So Chris just makes mental note of it and doesn't ask; he assumes by the use of the word 'someone' that it was a matter of self-defense, which is... Not fun to have to deal with, in his experience.

So instead he focuses on the last part, giving a small laugh and shaking his head.]

That all sounds super badass, but I'll just uh... Stick to guns. 'Balance' is not exactly a thing I'm super great with.

[He's also thinks that within spear range is far closer than he ever wants to get to a threat.]

I did wanna try to learn to use a bow, though. But uh, one of the events hit the day I was supposed to meet with the person who was going to teach me, and I never got back in contact with them.
