Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

► This log covers May 27th-June 10th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you drown or get eaten by an alien shark, let us know here.

[ He shrugs a little wryly ]

I don't know if this sea feels the same way. But certainly it does not seem to mind me.

[ For the first time, concern flicks through his eyes, driving back the ocean ]

No. I had not thought... they have not contacted you?

[ He frowns, worried, and the worry crowds out the sea in his eyes ]

At least you are safe - but you should speak to Curufin. He is building a boat, which I think will be helpful in getting you home! I am...

[ He has to pause ]

I am not sure - whichever island the Orchard is on? East, I think. I have not... been paying much attention.

[ Maglor pauses at the familiar voice, but it takes a bit longer than normal before he seems to be able to put together words - and even then, it almost sounds like he's singing, like there's water running through and under and over ever word ]

Law? What are you doing?

Writing a dissertation on the treatment of plague, what does it look like I'm doing?

[sarcasm aside he is just sort of standing on the rocks, but a closer look will reveal the pole in his hands and the bucket nearby. Maglor's distracted demeanor gets his attention, though, moreso than the waves lapping at the rocks below his feet]

I was going to remark on your good mood but now I'm not so sure.

"I used to go out and walk in the desert, too. It was such an improvement over the cave. Sometimes I'd wait for that short night when one sun was down and the other hadn't come up, and I'd just take off and run for miles. Can't exactly do that here. But I'm building a couple of boats, so it should be possible to row or sail to the other islands pretty soon."

Neither one of them like to be dependent on others, it seems.

"What do you do here, when you get restless?"
bythewaves: (alone)

[personal profile] bythewaves 2018-05-31 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I...

[ He shakes his head, trying to ground himself and focus on Law ]

I'm fine. The sea is just... very loud.

Boats. Good, she'll keep an eye out for them. Though if he simply intends to go from island to island with them, they aren't the sort she's after.

"All sorts of things," comes the non-answer. She's intent on asking questions of her own, not sitting through an interrogation. "But tell me more about your boats. Do you know how to build an ocean-faring ship?"
aroundthecoroner: (I knew this scent)

I may have just accidentally granted you access?? gdi dw

[personal profile] aroundthecoroner 2018-05-31 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Miserable places, huh? He's not even going to argue that one, honestly. Just about every world except the apocalypse ones sounds cooler than his.

"Uh, yeah. No magic or anything, as far as I know. Seems like a lot of people here have it, though. Kind of feel like I got ripped off."

He gestures to the thorns.

"So... what are those for? Decoration, or home security?"
so_dark_a_road: (by the laws of our people)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2018-05-31 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe he'll ask that one again some time. But for the present, he's following her lead.

"I'm starting with smaller boats, for the purposes of island-hopping and fishing not too far out to sea. But yes, I can build an ocean-faring vessel. And I'm intending to, if nothing prevents me. I'd really like to know what's beyond the horizon."
so_dark_a_road: (an oath may not be broken)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2018-05-31 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ Smile ]

If it doesn't mind you, that's a start, isn't it? Play your harp at it, charm it!

[ Curufin is concerned too, needless to say! ]

They haven't. I've searched all over North Island; not finding them. If you've searched the East Island and are not finding them, then they must be on one of the other two. Wherever they are, I hope they're together. [ Sigh of anxiety ]
bythewaves: (Arnold worry)

[personal profile] bythewaves 2018-05-31 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ There are no ocean maia here to charm, but Maglor supposes that he can try? ]

Oh... I didn't even realise... how long has it been? [ COMMENCE FRETTING ]

It is rather nice to walk by the ocean, is it not? Nice, when the wind blows in our hair. I even like the rain.

We are soon going to have boats on this island, at least! I'm building two of them. Would you be interested in a trip to East Island, as soon as i'm finished with the first boat? Maglor is there.

[ He won't mind if she asks! ]

Staten Island. I don't know where that is. [ He doesn't seem to know any New Yorkers. But he's always curious about other worlds. ]

Pleased to meet you, Alice! You must have arrived before the gods moved us here, then?

[Every change seems to bring Adam something new. He dreamed about traveling, back at home, when he didn't have the money or the time to do any such thing. Not the way his friends did, he had no destinations or dreams of exciting journeys. He just wanted to get out, and seeing the world was part of that. A status symbol, something people with money got to do.

There are so many things he hasn't seen. The desert was a first, actually. This?

Well, the ocean wasn't terribly far from his town. But how would he have gotten there? And when?

He walks up beside Alphys, looking out over the dark water. It looks like pictures of the ocean he's seen, but... more.]

She appears from the shadows. A shifting, rolling blackness that dances from rock to air, turning into a familiar tall, dark woman dressed in red and black.

Alphys may have caught the last of Ravine's entrance, or maybe all of it. She's been shifting from place to place on the islands, exploring the confined lands on this sad little planet.

Soon, she steps towards Alphys. They are not strangers, but Ravine is aware that this little monster lizard has the nerves of a salt shaker -- real trembly and losing more of it as she goes along.

"Do you need anything?" Ravine offers with genuine politeness, despite her unsettling arrival.

Rey. | South Island, June 1st (CLOSED to Nick Valentine)

[personal profile] circumitus 2018-05-31 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
This has just been great. Real fucking great. The dam she had been working so hard to restore is shot to shit, as far as she can tell. There's no salvaging what's left, if there's anything left of it at all that she can find. First the Null trash her hard work, now this. She's done her best to maintain what they've got from the wind-powered grid but it's not going to be a very ideal situation, especially with Kaiba on a different island altogether. They could do with more solar panels, anyway.

With a weary groan, Rey just flops into a Speakeasy booth, about slamming her forehead against the tabletop. Despite the loud thunk, it doesn't hurt as much as it sounds.

"Ugh, 'm going to kill the assholes who voted for this Gilligan's Island fuckery," Rey muffles, her head buried in her folded arms over the table.

No, wait. Gilligan's Island would have been more jungle-like, wouldn't it? Hell if Rey is taking it back now.

Logically, the dam was probably going to be shot to shit either way. She opted for the frozen planet, and that would have probably left them in this very situation.

Best to just ditch the dam altogether, anyway.

Dammit.

Most of the time Rey is at the Speakeasy. With her house just across the water, she has nowhere else to sleep, anyway.

On the beachline overlooking the West Island, Rey sits on one of the basalt columns, one foot planted on the lower rocky column while her left is propped up on another, tapping furiously over the slightly more elevated pillar. She watches the tides roll in and out down the shores, brow creased and hand pressed to her mouth as she haunches forward in a rather relaxed (but cantankerous) position. While the winds are unkind and the climate is as chilly as it's ever been, she still appears as underdressed for the weather as always.

The waters don't look very friendly, but Rey can't take her mind off the distance. If she's careful, if she puts her memories of the past women she had been to work, the space between the islands doesn't even pose a real challenge.

"Could probably swim it," she mutters to herself, eyes locked on the rapid, rolling waves.

Maybe not, but when has bad ideas ever stopped her?

Nagito Komaeda | OTA

[personal profile] hoperulesdespairdrools 2018-05-31 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Komaeda ended up on the west island. Or, to be more precise, a rock in the ocean near a beach from the west island. The good news is that he is able to swim. The bad news is that aside from the fact that he is not in the best health, there is an alien shark swimming around him, and occasionally jumping up to try and take a bite out of him.

At first, Komaeda can be seen standing on the rock with a dagger in hand.

Unfortunately, the next moment, he slips and falls backwards into the water. Just his luck.
Should you try to rescue him, you have a very good chance of getting bitten on the nose by a lobster once you both manage to reach the shore.

"Both. I quite like them. They make the place a little more hospitable, don't you think?"

If she cast this at sea and created a false island, how many people could she fool? She could make land bridges seem to appear between the parts of the city, or all sorts of other bizarre things. Something to keep in mind. Of course, there are probably plenty here who are used to such illusions. But this one before her certainly isn't.

"Let me guess, United States?"

Somehow everyone without magic seems to come from that foreign land. She can't wait to find out how to get there some day, where she will be completely unstoppable.

"It must take quite a while to build something like that though, wouldn't it? And once you have done so, the list of those wanting to accompany you will probably be incredibly long."

Although perhaps it depends on the style of the craft. Simpler designs, like those the orcs or the island dwarves use - there might be enough resources here to make a few such boats, capable of holding ten people rather than the broad galleons of the navies. There would be less competition for their use, if they could make a few - and one could be more easily stolen and hidden away offshore somewhere.
so_dark_a_road: (until the world ends)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2018-05-31 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"For any boat, it depends on the design, the size, and the available working hours. A large ocean-going vessel would certainly take longer than these smaller ones I'm building now. And as for people wanting to accompany me, I'll manage. And I'm sure I'll have help. The smaller craft can be taken out many times a day. Sailing or rowing time between these islands is short. As for longer voyages, out of sight of these islands, going to who knows where! -- well, we'll see. There may or may not be a lot of volunteers."

Not everybody is willing to brave seasickness, high seas, storms, and the cold and wet. But the adventurous generally are.
abyssalarcana: (prone to wander endlessly)

[personal profile] abyssalarcana 2018-05-31 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Right - she had almost forgotten. Most of these people lack the ambitions she has. Most of them chose this location probably because they wanted to lounge around on the beach and pretend they're on some extended holiday.

Good. It makes her despise them more, but it also makes her life easier. It's not as if she ever expects or wants to like these mortals anyway.

"Of course. And I expect that many prefer the few comforts the gods are able to give them. Fending for themselves on the sea would be too difficult for many. Of those who are capable, some will choose to stay and defend those who are not. So, if you are looking to make something seaworthy, what do you hope to find?"

On this particular day Law is actually mapping things out, mentally, testing to find the closest points on all the islands so that if he has to Shambles himself over to one, he knows the quickest route. The southernmost island doesn't have very much that he's interested in, but, you know. Due diligence and all that. He passes by to hear Rey muttering to herself and diverts down closer.

"What's the matter?" he wonders. "Stuck?"
