They don't know each other well, not at all -- but perhaps that's why it's a little easier to admit some things, to divulge what he might not to someone much closer. He knows what they thing, is well aware of their concern -- and in some cases, desire to help. Again, it is a waste of time and resources as far as Carlisle is concerned.
