"I doubt they could even if I were capable of asking," he admits. "But I cannot ask these false deities for help, nor can I accept the necromancy they so dutifully perform on those who have died here. The circumstances of my end are... more complicated than I initially believed."

Were it just death coming for him, he might be able to face it with more grace; however, it's what happens after he dies that he fears the most, whether it's what his demise will do to those he cares for, or what the corpse he leaves behind will in his stead.
