Intro Log: Puddle Jumpers

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Fresh meat, lots of rain and angry ogres

If the rain on your face isn't enough to wake you up in the colosseum, maybe the thundering footsteps and- well, thunder- is. The first thing that you may notice is that it's incredibly wet around here, with winds that could knock you over if you aren't careful and thunder that brings with it a torrent of constant rainfall.

That's all fine though, because the gods saw fit to help you out on your way in and now everyone will be waking up wearing a rain coat! These coats are a little odd, and some of them are downright silly, but we trust that you'll make do. Of course, a few of the raincoats have additional sleeves, neck holes, and entirely too many buttons as well- but hey, it's the best we could do.

Wait, what was that about thundering footsteps? Oh right, as you're navigating your new fashion choices, there are some monsters afoot who will want nothing more than to grind you into a pulp and eat you- well, if you're organic, that is. If you're not organic, then they still want to grind you to a pulp, but maybe not so much the eating part.

Ogres are from many fantasy stories, but these in particular are from the Dragon Age series. With incredible strength and stamina and massive horns, fangs, and a bloodlust for violence, these monsters won't stop until everyone around them is a blood smear on the ground. They're also not too happy about this rainfall either, so be careful not to slip in the puddles as you run away from them!

Once you've splashed around a bit, feel free to run off into the stormy abyss of our islands. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[ Ephemera snorts. ]

Sure. Orders are only one part of it. You gotta be smart, gotta make decisions fast and commit to them no matter what. 'course, I never got promoted much. Was kinda bad at that part.

Earth? You think I'm from that miserable planet? [ Starscream barks out a laugh and gives a flourish with his hand. That's rich. ]

You humans really are full of yourselves. I am from Cybertron which is definitely no Earth. But I have spent time on that planet before arriving here. The t-cog, or transformation cog, acts as a scanner for us to copy and take...shall we say, a blueprint of any vehicle of our choosing.

[ It should be obvious what that means. Newt's smart he can figure it out, right? ]

[Oh. He's actually super chill? That's nice. She relaxes a bit, a small drop of her shoulders to release the tension.]

Oh, uhm, I'm Alphys. Or well, Dr. Alphys, but Alphys is fine. I uh... live here? I guess. Not here as in, uh, t-this building, as in like, the city. Like everyone here.

They aren't gods. I can tell you that right away. Assholes may like to call themselves that, but they don't have the power to back it up.

They're more like liches, sucking up emotions for substance.

(She narrows her eyes at his stubbornness, imagining that if she somehow had the willpower to knock him upside the head with her sword, it wouldn't do any good. She isn't a warrior.)

You needn't use magic on me!

(Her thoughts have made her feel a bit guilty.)

(Those questions might be lifted in time by the arrival of her friends.)

They do. Some of those I consider dearest are part of the Guard.

(She smiles suddenly, brightly.) Shopping is easy if you are on the right island. Sewing I could teach you if you want to learn.

Likewise, Tinya.

That sounds completely terrifying. Like a nightmare. [ things are terrible in Panem, but they've never had to wonder who the enemy is or wonder about any of the whys.

she stops her prodding of the monster to look at him. ]

What did you do?

[she hopes they will be. there are so many of her friends that she already misses and she'd love to have her boyfriend here]

They are? What are their names, maybe I know them already.

[she's pleased to see Sansa smile. she'd seemed so serious and she can't be more than a couple of years older than Tinya is] Which island would that be? Because I've been through the clothes piles more times than I can count and have only found a couple of things that weren't awful. And I've never sewn before, but if it will get me some better clothes, I'm willing to try.

[Smart girl.

Sansa's awe just leaves Lup grinning, just sharp enough to flash a hint of her teeth.]

The list is pretty small, but it exists. Just can't go around sharin' it. Can't let folks know I have any weaknesses. Would taint my rep.

[Her eyes slide from the younger woman over to the nearest ogre, some twenty feet away still.]

Just takes a lot of practice. I never had the patience for it. [Or the strength, not in those lanky arms.] But if you ever wanna learn a little magic, I can teach you a spell or two.

This is only for the monsters, I assure you. If I wanted to use magic on you, I would simple put you to sleep and carry you out.

[Don't make him do that Sansa. Even if he had some hesitations about whether it would even work on her. Sansa would probably fight him, and she was strong willed.]

Please, will you go? I will happily escort you to safety.

( She's doing that thing again, the one where she isn't properly explaining shit, and it isn't until Newt's confused words that she realises that.

A sigh, and her eyes flicker back to their usual deep brown. )

Was there. ( It sucked, she got soaked, and her archery lessons were only so useful thanks to this thing's apparent regenerative properties. ) I can see powers. Door's power interferes with trying to look at anything the monsters might have when I'm there.

( Which, after all the time she'd spent wanting to find the Door, is a drawback she didn't really consider. )

Do you have any suspicions about what it might do?

[To the other robotic entities, which Connor is definitely asking about just for theoretical reasons. Definitely.]

I trust you wouldn't do that to me. (Even soaking wet and frightened Sansa has a strong sense of morality.) If you feel so strongly about it, I won't fight you.

(They are friends and the Ogres are...horrible. All she can really do is outrun them.)

Will you protect yourself if you return? Use your magic for yourself and others, Kelson. I think that would be the best use of it.

[He would. But not right now after she shamed him into not doing it. Unless something drastically changed, he'd continue to be polite.]

Thank you. You have my word, I will protect myself and others. I vowed to do that to the best of my ability when I was crowned and knighted, I don't intend to go back on that.

[Kelson vanished the fire, having made his point.]

Shall we then, my lady?

[Humble's one way to think about it. Mostly she's just depressed. And anxious. Which leads to downplaying a lot of accomplishments.]

It's okay! I, uh, a-appreciate you volunteering. Its not just me at the lab anyway, uhm, there's a lot of other people. It's not even... well, okay, it was just my lab, and then other people showed up. But I wasn't really doing anything with it before they did, so...

[So it all shakes out. She prefers sharing, anyway. Having her own lab was just paralyzingly big, considering what happened when she was solo back home. This, with all the activity and help, is so much nicer.]

[ She exhales sharply. ]

Yes, I suppose I must. Do you consider them honorable, these gods?

[ Now that's interesting. Kettara listens carefully. ]

You have measure of their power? A true measure?

[ This is worth knowing. ]

Liches are -- powerful. But they die. They die in the legends.

[ Kettara frowns at him. ]

Wisdom comes from overcoming trials.

[ Necessary trials, though. When there's a worthy goal at the end. ]

How long have you been here?

So you graciously allowed them to stay, despite the boorish behavior. Again, you prove yourself far greater a lady than you give yourself credit for.

[If it was Tyki in the situation, it would have gotten unpleasant very quickly. While he tends to be easygoing on most accounts, he wouldn't be very happy with intruders. Even if he had more than enough room.

He thinks she's been taken advantage of, honestly.]

I can only assume it will either give you a boost in energy or...the opposite.

[ Well that's a pretty big difference there Starscream. ]

But I have witnessed it applied to human technology and it seemed to work fine on its own.

A thousand tyrants would agree with that general sentiment.

[Although very few of them disliked the concept of free will because it deprived them of living umbrellas, she figures.]

Maybe someday he'll make it to this world, too—I wouldn't mind meeting him. I've never talked to a pumpkin umbrella before.

[The silence works well enough for Mettaton. He uses the given opportunity to charge the air with a controlled bolt of electricity that dances a captivating but dangerous line towards the ogre before enveloping it in his own brand of magic.

Ohhh, he hopes it hurts. How dare this creature attack him so thoughtlessly?

The creature is forced to take a knee from the power of Mettaton's attack, but the cat monster is easily within her rights to join in at this point. For his part, Mettaton's going to rally a little--the water's starting to seep into the gaps between his arm segments now.

Very uncomfortable.]

You're up, darling...

Alright, don't push yourself too hard now, darling.

[Although Mettaton knows better than to hang up, he almost wishes Alphys couldn't see him at this point. He knows that he looks guilty, and it takes every single ounce of restraint in him not to apologize, practically prostrate himself before her and express how much he knows he's screwed up.

Even...if he wasn't really in control of his coming or going. He should be, shouldn't he?! He's Mettaton...!

That used to mean something.

Regardless, the expression is forced away, and he glances around, trying to get his bearings a little better. It's hard--not everything looks the same as he remembers it.]

There were some ghastly ogres trying to disassemble me, but of course you know just as well as I that there's no competition!!

[As usual when it comes to such subjects, there's a mild, discomforting aggression just under the surface. Look, he'd been getting better before. He hadn't had as much LOVE in him as he had before. But...it's not all going to go away like Hadriel's a magical fairy tale place now, is it?]

...Anyway, I'm a little ways north of it, around a temple. Does that help?

(A crown and the trappings of a knight haven't prevented other men from being horribly selfish, but she holds him in higher esteem. He is more like Robb or her father. Sansa sheathes her sword and gathers up her skirt, walking through the muck to his side.)

See me outside and I can find my way home.

(He can do more good here.)

(She laughs softly - as much as she can in the miserable circumstances. Her sense of humor will be much better when she is warm by a fire and dry.)

Be careful you don't reveal your weaknesses through your actions. More than your reputation will be on the line.

(The scent of the ogre is nauseating and she lifts her sword, ready to strike.)

How would I learn magic? Don't I need the ability, latent or otherwise?
