It is, however, much easier and much more natural to lean down next to the cleric when he returns to his work once the illusion has been dispelled.

The alien does his best to help with arranging the logs, but there's only so much he can do in that regard without getting in Carlisle's way, so he moves on to surrounding the firepit with small stones and then clearing the surrounding area of any pines or twigs. Preparing a site to burn might be counterintuitive to his very nature, but he has learned a thing or two over the many years he's lived among humans now.
