Event Log: Null Attack

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the Null Attack event
Where: All over the city

What starts as a normal day will begin to herald in the beginning of the end. On May 29th, you might see something in the sky out of the corner of your eye- blink and you miss it, but there's definitely something there, something that's not any kind of animal you've ever seen. Now that you know to look, you may be paying closer attention to the sky in order to catch the next one that flies past- a ship. A ship that that seems to be designed in a way that might remind you of the Null themselves.

As the days pass, it becomes unmistakable- the Null are here and are scouting out the area. It's time to prepare for an immediate attack and start putting all those contingency plans to good use. Will you gear up for a fight and fall into formation? Will you close and lock your doors and stay inside? Or perhaps there's some other plan that you want to enact?

You'll have time to discuss that on the network later, but now you need to start reacting to the Null's actions- which are apparently to start building smaller encampments around the city as they try to find the way inside. Confusion is holding them at bay for now but it might be time to start building some defensive measures and fortifications, because she won't be able to keep them at bay forever.

When they break in, they do so in a big way- with a massive explosion at Confusion's temple that rattles throughout the entire city. It's obvious that something has happened- and what exactly that something is reveals itself shortly when Null begin to flood the city, having broken through Confusion's protection.

This is when the fight escalates to an all-out war. Nobody is spared, and they're watching everyone from above. What will you do? How will you keep the ones you love safe? How can anyone survive this? All you can do is fight back, all we can do is wait. Good luck, Hadriel.

[It absolutely makes Alphys feel better to not be alone out here, even if she doesn't want any of her friends to get hurt. She trusts George though, and being with friends is going to give her power. She just needs to trust and be brave.

Her voice still shakes when she speaks, regardless.]

Yeah! They, t-they won't beat us, and oHMYGOD--

[A Null surges out from the side and Alphys' words degrade into a yell as she swings the keyblade with all her might and clocks it right across the face. The Null stumbles back, stunned, but Alphys also looks fairly shocked.]

Ohmygawd I hit it.

[Uuuh better keep moving there Alphys, takes more than 1 hit to win a fight.]

[George was on her way to the Clinic when she got caught up in this. she's banking on her Reaper healing getting her out of any bad situation she might find herself in, but she's not about to leave Alphys to fight these things alone.

she flashes what's meant to be a reassuring smile, but it probably looks more like a grimace.

as the Null bursts out of hiding and towards them, she raises her sword, but Alphys seems to have it covered. for now]

Yeah, and now we've gotta keep hitting it 'til it stays down!

[and while the Null is temporarily down, George stabs it with her sword, hoping that she manages to hit something vital]

[Alphys is the master of 'this was supposed to be a smile but I'm too scared for that', so the feeling is conveyed just fine. George's reminder snaps her back to functionality as she rushes forward with her sword, and the Null sputters under the impact of the blade.]

Make sure you hit the cores! That's what shuts them off, they m-might have more than one--

[She sprints around just past it, trying to find where this might be exposed. When in doubt, she's found breaking extremities works too, but this is the first time she's applied this knowledge in a fight. Already, she's starting to pant from all the movement, but she clocks its legs to let it topple forward onto the ground.]

Find the core!

[the Null's laser manages to get George just under her collarbone, but it doesn't do much other than burn a neat hole through her (which is already knitting itself back together) and prompt George to stab it again while yelling]

[and oh yeah, Alphys is saying something important]

Where are their cores?

[she stabs the Null straight through its middle. unfortunately, that's not where it's core is. fucking figures.

but hey, now it's on the ground, like a turtle that's been flipped over. awesome. time to stab it methodically until finally, finally she hits the core and it powers down]

...oh hey. I think we killed it. Cool.

[...she stabs it another time or six, just to make sure]

[Alphys didn't realize she'd been holding her breath until George said they were safe and she suddenly heaved a sigh, bent over to put her hands on her knees while she pants. Gosh, this hero thing requires a lot of yelling. Who knew, huh? She never put much stock into video game movements, but wow this is hard.

Once she recovers a bit, she manages out a few more words.]

Yeah... g-go team...

[Her expression is wobbly, but it's a smile. She lets go of the big key and it disappears into sparkles, and she walks over to observe the Null.]

So! Uh, the cores are like a Null's brain, or heart, kind of like that? Each one controls an area of the body, s-so like, the bigger they are the more processing they need. To take out a Null, you need to uhm, get rid of all of them. If any Core is still uh, still active, it can get b-back up.

[she glares at the dead Null for a beat, then looks up at Alphys. who looks like she's about to pass out. or hyperventilate. or both. is it possible to do both?

and this killing shit thing is hard fucking work. this is a thing people do. for fun? wtf, no]

Yeah. That is one dead Null. You did good.

[she smiles back, sheathes her sword, and puts her hands on her hips as she surveys the dead Null]

Seriously? Holy fucking shit. That's cheating. Mortal types, you take out just one of their major organs and they're usually toast. But this one's not getting up anytime soon.

[she kicks it for good measure]

[Both is about right, tbh. But she does smile at the praise, even if she's still panting a little.]

Yeah, uh-- yeah. They're really uhm, r-robust? They're designed to keep going, so.

[It's a whole lot. It's all a whole lot.]

I don't even know if they have, uhm, an awareness of them or anything... I've studied them a lot, but uh, not on them w-working...

[she hesitates a moment, then reaches over to squeeze Alphys' shoulder reassuringly]

No kidding. I thought that thing would fucking never die.

[and she was totally out of her depth. but. she managed. so, yay?]

Seems like you're gonna get some real up close and personal experience with these things.

[Alphys could think her entire life was described by being totally out of her depth. Sometimes it just be like that.]

Well uh, I learned on the fly during the last, uhm, invasion? And then had a lot of scrap to work with after, so it was just uh, a w-way to be prepared I guess! For uh, for this, in theory...

[She probably should've talked more about Null physiology ahead of the attack, but she was... busy. To put it lightly.]

The only way to make sure they're out is to totally take them apart though. If it's whole in any way it can probably be fixed. But we don't have time to get them, and uh, I d-don't really want to kill a lot of people, so...

That's smart. Shoulda expected you'd do that. Me, I spent nearly the whole time in the Clinic the last time, except for the part where the Null burned down the last Clinic and they were all shooting at us.

[people should understand that. and if they don't, they're assholes]

Yeah, taking 'em apart would take time. Time we probably don't have. So let's just trash 'em up as much as we can?

Hahahaha yeah I b-barricaded the Lab and didn't leave for like two weeks.

[Never forget Newt crawling through a makeshift tunnel in the ground through the floor to get supplies!! Haha!! It was so fucking bad!!!]

But uh, yeah. As long as we do everything we, uhm, can, it'll be fine for now.

[Her face says that it is clearly not fine, but boy howdy is she trying.]

How'd you live? I mean, it's not like the Lab has a working shower or massive food reserves.

[it does, on the other hand, have various creatures in various states of dissection, but she's having a hard time understanding how those could be useful]

[and she swings her sword at them with absolutely no finesse whatsoever. she might as well be swinging a baseball bat. either way, Null bits fly everywhere]

[That first question is just met with more nervous laughter.]

Well, uh, m-mostly we ate through what we had, and then Newt would go for supplies. We dug a tunnel under the back wall that we used to, uhm, g-go in and out. But it was! Really terrible!

[At least she can see this one being pulverized. She wishes it felt more cathartic, but... maybe she's just sensitive.]

At least this time we, uhm, had time to prepare. Last time it was just... they weren't here, and, uh. T-Then they were. It was the scariest thing I'd ever seen, when they bust through the wall.

Oh. That's smart. But, two weeks with no showers, I'd go insane. And my hair would start turning into dreds and I'd have to go rastafarian and smoke a lot of pot and that's just not me. [a friendly nudge in the side.

George is feeling enough catharsis for the both of them, believe me]

...I didn't see 'em. The first time. The first time, I spent holed up in the Clinic. Until it got burned down, then it was a clusterfuck.

[She isn't sure she gets the entire reference, but she laughs a little anyway because she doesn't want to be left out.]

All of it was bad. Hopefully, uhm... t-this can be better. Or at least it can be over.

[They're close. They're so, so close. They just have to get through it.]
