Intro Log: Death Comes

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for July.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: July 10th-15th
Warnings: Deathclaws. That's all you really need to know.

As usual, the new arrivals in Hadriel will be waking up on the dirt ground of the colosseum, and as usual, they won't be waking up alone. This month brings coat hangers of all shapes and, uh, sizes strewn about the colloseum floor around all of the new arrivals.

Get up, get out, meet and greet, find some new exciting interior decorating options, but don't forget about the more prominent threat: the (newly) local deathclaws roaming about in the inner halls of the arena. These deathclaws are vicious bipedal creatures with long arms ending in curved talons, horns ripe for goring and, of course, teeth as long as fingers. These animals have been engineered to be as deadly as they can possibly be, so you might want to buddy up before taking one on.

Have you escaped from the deathclaws? Made a few friends? Not died horribly? Great! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers July 10th-15th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

on that note is ichigo #1 at trying to act cool in hadriel

[ It isn't the most comfortable place for this sort of thing, but a newcomer wandering the streets in agitated eagerness to go likely doesn't care much for that. Hermann adjusts his weight, leaning more on his cane, which unlike that of a certain sandal hat guy he knows nothing about, has nothing in it but wood. ]

They call this city Hadriel. As you noted, it's underground. There are tunnels, caverns, beyond the city, but they change and twist and become difficult to navigate, and more importantly, lead back here. They are also filled with a variety of beasts, such as those you likely encountered upon entering the city.

You 'entered' by means of what is called a Door, though that is likely a gross oversimplification. We have not seen the Door. They, by which I mean the so-called gods, describe it as an ancient, unpredictable artifact that drags in chaotic figures. For all that it is purportedly unpredictable, it has been reportedly following an Earth calendar by opening every thirty or thirty-one days. Twenty-eight once, if you understand. On those days, mostly humans are brought in, along with some variety of monster.

The gods are likely not gods as we might think of them, but they are not human despite adopting the appearance, and have great power, calling themselves by and feeding off of emotion. Thusfar there is Mr. Hope, Mr. Fear, Mr. Sorrow, Miss Rage, and Miss Delight. It is said they had all been killed but for Mr. Hope and Mr. Fear, along with -- if not necessarily in a related event but I do think it rather likely -- the alien inhabitants who once lived here. Mr. Fear opened the door and began all this roughly ten months ago, so I've been told, as I only arrived last month. Mr. Hope aspires to resurrect his fallen gods and has regularly been doing so, once empowered enough by our hope, I suppose. It went Miss Rage, then Miss Delight, and recently Mr. Sorrow.

They monthly inflict something on the populace to excite a particular emotion to heights. Often it's highly unpleasant, though again, I relay what I've been told.

Hm.

[ Pausing, considering. ]

The restored housing, either by Miss Delight or Mr. Hope, largely the latter, is freely available if you find the empty room. The items in the shops are free though not in great surplus, as Mr. Hope keeps them supplied and has limited strength. He keeps an awful lot going and also keeps the beasts in the tunnels.

[ Considering again. ]

Well, I'll pause for questions.

yeah, and #1 at failing miserably at that

[Okay.

Magic tunnels meant to confuse you, maybe trap you if you aren't lucky, filled with monsters. Tunnels = bad.

There is a magic doohickey that brought them here. Everybody but the gods (are they just gods? is anyone native to this place still around?) got sucked into the city through some kind of transportation magic. (How are they sure it's one-way?) It happens once a month.

There are gods that might not actually be gods that brought them here to eat their feelings. They're like an ant farm of emotions. They're being used to bring dead gods back to life, and to facilitate that, the gods try to make the people here feel -- what was it? -- fear, hope, sorrow...rage....shoot, he doesn't remember. Oh, well.

But they can crash wherever they like and the stuff in the shops is free for the taking.

One moment, Ichigo is listening, taking it all in, nodding solemnly. Okay, he's got it, he's with you so far, Hermann. A second later, though, the calmness is gone.

What the fuck.
]

You're telling me a bunch of gods brought us here, on purpose, to use us? Like we're a bunch of batteries that they can charge up by making us scared or angry?

[If that's true, that's not just a douche move. That's a douche move on a colossal scale.]

Are you screwing with me?

In fact, they claim it wasn't on pur --

[ Ah.

No, he's upset. That's understandable. As is the question, really, though Hermann likes to think of himself as the sort of person that no one could possibly look at and wonder, 'Is this guy screwing with me?' As he likes to be taken seriously, it's much better to do craft everything toward that end.

Because it's understandable, however, Hermann tries not to be offended.

Tries.

He scowls. ]

Young man, I have better things to do than to poke bogey -- I mean invent a load of rubbish to deceive you. Ask around, if you like. You'll find everyone else in on the sorry game. I did say it wouldn't go down easy. You'll just as surely find beasts in the tunnels, empty rooms for the taking, shops without tenders which also invite theft, and strange symbols on the appliances, with the furniture not quite right.

[It takes Ichigo a good few seconds to calm down. He stares furiously at Hermann, trying to find something, anything, that doesn't fit -- something that might betray a lie.

He doesn't find it. The story is crazy, but nothing Ichigo's seen so far contradicts it. Ichigo knows better than most that crazy stories aren't always untrue, but he also doesn't like to swallow them without question. He takes a deep breath, then blows it out.
]

Okay. Say it is all true. If that's the case, what do you mean it wasn't on purpose? Isn't it awfully convenient that an artifact they didn't fully understand accidentally brought them exactly what they needed to bring their dead back to life?

not that it says much if ishida is 1% better at acting cool

[personal profile] verinumeri 2016-07-22 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ His own aggravation keeps the young man's agitation, his palpable anger, from putting Hermann on a wary defensive. Hermann both does and does not judge by appearances: he pays little attention to how attractive a person is, how agreeable their features, but he cares about presentation. Attire, that sort of thing. That the young man looks as though he's frequently scowling doesn't make any impact, but his hair does.

Hair wouldn't necessarily be enough -- Ranger Mori's exemplary and she's got the blue. It's the hair plus that look, the attitude made coarse by confused ire, that would begin to sharpen an unfavorable impression. He doesn't know enough about Japanese culture to know one there might look at the young man and reflexively think punk or gangster, but he could get there, lead by unnatural looking hair, an unfriendly face, and all that aggression.

But there's an effort at composure, which helps ease Hermann, too. Instead, he starts thinking, there really ought to be a better way to explain this to those who haven't gone through it before. It's objectively absurd.

Even better for impressions, the young man again asks a good question, and Hermann snaps back into approving and chalk-dusted. ]

I'll caution again that I've only been here thirty days. Everything I've learned, nearly everything, it's second hand. I've only conversed with Mr. Sorrow at any length.

That said, it is my understanding that Mr. Fear opened the Door for whatever power based reason, we started popping regularly through, and Mr. Hope, also able to use us, has done and helped keep us alive so to gather the power to bring back the gods.

You're quite right, of course. There's much that doesn't make good sense. Is Mr. Fear entirely uninterested in the process? They won't say what killed them. Judging by the buildings, the architecture, the furniture, the appliances, the people here before were alien and they died unpleasantly. Mr. Hope's been restoring things but they died, sure enough. I've been told when this began, purportedly ten months ago, there wasn't any food. They had to hunt the bear beasts that'd come through with them. Mr. Hope eventually provided, once he could sort how to do it, but --

Well, have you seen it? No food, but we're breathing all right, aren't we? They didn't suffocate before starving. You understand what I'm saying, though I'd wager you aren't hearing English? He wasn't prepared to feed us, but he can use us all right, they won't let us out of these caves, which just happened to have the right atmosphere? You cannot imagine how unlikely it is that the people here before us breathed oxygen.

[ Or had similar digestive needs, for that matter. See: Mr. Sorrow's garden. ]

[He listens, processing it all. A lot of it doesn't add up, and Ichigo clearly doesn't like it, and he looks real surprised, like he's only just realized it, when Hermann says that thing about English. There aren't any more outbursts, though -- just thoughtful consideration.]

Sounds like our best chance of getting out is this Door thing. Do you know where they're keeping it?

[personal profile] verinumeri 2016-08-20 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Probably he should not have assumed about the language. There was no reason to think the young man wasn't speaking English, or wasn't from America or any other like place -- only that, Dr. Banner had mentioned a heavy representation from Asia, only that there was something in the shape of his mouth, how he moved it, if Hermann paid attention. ]

Of course not. Even if we did, they've been clear in their disinterest in teaching us how to use it. It may not even be something we are capable of perceiving. Mr Sorrow indicated that they would consider the problem of us once Mr. Hope had finished resurrecting their companions.

While I'm inclined to favor Mr. Hope overall, I'm wary of that feeling. At least one who has been here far longer despises him, and she's highly reliable. Do we try to help and support him, quicken the process, or resist what may be inevitable?

[ He doesn't quite shrug, but it's in the question, mostly rhetorical though it is.

Hermann's terrible with introductions, but sometimes he converses long enough to remember himself. ]

Oh. Dr. Gottlieb. I am. Er. You are?

[Oh. Right. Introductions. Ichigo tears his mind away from turning over that last question in the light of the information he's been given and comes back to the present.]

Right. We never got each other's names. I'm Ichigo Kurosaki.

Look, you've probably got better things to do than stand here and fill me in all day, so I've got one last question. Is there anything else I oughta know about all this?

[ Actually... he doesn't. Not on these days. He'd been looking forward to being able to help, at least with this part. Finding someone who actually needed the explanation far from the coliseum (where he would not venture) had been a happy thing.

He won't say all that, however. He's said plenty as is. Hermann shakes his head. ]

It wasn't any trouble, and isn't, but no. I believe I've covered the essentials. Use your common sense, I suppose. Get along and don't aggravate the gods, should the opportunity arise. If you have any other questions, you can find me in the directory on your phone.

You should prioritize finding a room to call your own and perhaps gathering any supplies you need.

[Seems like solid advice. Ichigo...well, he can't promise he'll behave himself around the gods, but the rest of it seems easy enough to follow. He nods.]

Guess I'll see you around.

[Thanks, doc, he owes you one.]
