Intro Log: Arm Yourself

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for August
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: August 10th-15th
Warnings: Stalkers, newbies, and cute loot!

Sleeping on the cold dirt ground of the colosseum is enough to make anyone uncomfortable. It might be a little worse this month than others, as some of you may be waking up on top of or around various self defense devices (btw: that last one is a taser).

Come to think of it, you'll probably need those. Also in the colosseum and already stalking you are... uh, well, stalkers from the Borderlands game series. Stalkers come armed with claws, teeth, and sharp tails- and what's more, they can turn invisible to sneak up on you. Zap them with your newfound taser or stab them with your jewelry comb knife or just run away screaming- we won't judge, but you have to do something or else they'll kill you and eat your corpse and all sorts of unfortunate things.

Good luck finding a way out. Maybe you can make some friends along the way.

All done and escaped from the clutches of the colosseum? Awesome! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[The woman is staring at her. Looking for something? And seemingly not finding it. Maketh narrows her eyes.] My name is Maketh. I'm a guardswoman.

You may have to download it off the network. [Maketh rubs her face briefly.] But I am heading back that way, if you'd like to walk with me.

[ Hadriel. Not... Haven? There had been a Colosseum there but it had only materialized because of her fears inside the convenience store. ]

Yeah, I kind of gathered that much. [ Don't mind her, sarcasm and keeping it light is just how she copes. Still. He's her best option now for getting out of here uneaten so she'll follow along. She doesn't mind his help, surprisingly, but that's probably the shock she's still in that she's doing the best job she can to hide. ]

Alright, let's get the heck outta' dodge.

[ She's thankful it isn't first or even second world hop. The transitions are always rough, but it's almost something she can consider 'normal' now. Just like being resurrected from the dead.

God, her life got really fucked up somewhere along the way, didn't it? ]

Well, I'm not gonna subject you to my slobber, so you can take these- [ The blond holds out her good hand and transfers a couple things she'd been carrying with it, mindful to separate it from what she'd previously held in her mouth. She does keep the couple items balanced on either shoulder though as a kind of fun little thing to focus on. ]

Thanks, dude. I appreciate it. So, is this like... your thing? Helping new faces?

[ Not that she doesn't appreciate it, of course, but she does have to wonder. ]

[The longer Misa looks at her the more disturbing it gets, as if she is having a conversation with a corpse.]

You... work here? Where are we?

In a sense. [It's more complicated than that, of course. Maketh scans the area to make sure nothing is about to sneak up on them, then turns her attention back to the woman.] This place is called Hadriel. I was brought here as you were, almost six months ago.

"Her brother will be at the clinic," she offers, by way of explanation. "All buttons and precision. He is not a fighter and she worries."

Still. It's good, useful information that Maketh has given her. "Thank you. What else should be known?"

[funnybird]

[ With a beak so much larger than his own, Fetch can happily stay top bird. Crow has no problem with that at all. Just having a pal to hang out with will be good enough for him! ]

No, not really. I kind of picked it up out of desperation. You know, from being stuck in a trunk for so long, I just got so bored. The birds I did get to hang out with didn't have much to say other than the typical bird twitter. So I figured, 'heck, why not?' and started teaching myself. Boy, was it difficult!

[mismanagement]

"Her....? Do you know someone here?"

Someone at the clinic. Bruce, perhaps? Or someone new.

Maketh rubs her face briefly. This girl is setting her on edge, though Makeh is having trouble putting her finger on why. It's not just the third person, or the distant way she speaks. There's something else, just under the surface.

"The caves are dangerous, and should not be traveled alone. Food and supplies can be found in the city, as well as decent apartments. They're not completely safe, but they're better than could have been expected."

[ Oh, he's still... on that? Well, okay. Crow can live with talking about himself a little longer. No hard feelings from this bird! ]

Well, since Alltongue is the universal language of magic then technically it is magic.

But no. I taught myself the hard way. By copying everything I heard and learning the meaning along the way. I figured it out eventually.

"Her is the extension of self when self is difficult to narrow down into my for reasons better explained some other day. It's in the way she talks. A distance made necessary by the past."

The caves are dangerous. Food & supplies. Apartments; yes, these things she knows, but it's good to hear them again.

Well, I'm glad I got that heads up before I went exploring this place. I love a good bird bath, but not if it's toxic!

[ He's pretty steady. Bobbing slightly with her steps to stay balanced. It's a bird thing. ]

Boiling water isn't necessarily within my skill set though. May need to get some help with that...

The bird shrugs. He shrugs hard.

"Really couldn't tell you. Crazy? Drunk? Didn't trust me not to fly away the moment I saw daylight? Even then, he was the only home I ever had. I never had anywhere else to go so it didn't cross my mind to actually fly away until I met April."

Six- I can't stay here that long! Light needs me! There has to be a way out, right?

It's hard to imagine any demi-human who wouldn't have least heard, even if they were too squeamish to watch the whole thing. Despite the fact that something was clearly going on here, all Sato can really do is roll with the situation as he would have before getting transported to... wherever this is.

"The experimentation on demi-humans. Weapons testing, guinea pigs for pharmaceuticals... It's no less than government-sanctioned torture," he says with grave disapproval, shaking his head sadly. "And still humans are willing to capture us and turn us in to the authorities. None of us should have to stand for that."

To be fair, nothing about those words is a lie. But that doesn't mean Sato isn't spinning a story anyway to justify himself, prove himself one of the 'good guys' in the kid's eyes... or at least see if they're on the same team.

( she'll take that advice, thank you. the thing - taser, whatever - gets stabbed straight at one of them and while it isn't quite powerful enough to really damage the stalker seriously, it does seem to do enough that whatever shield seems to flicker around and break down a bit. ) Fucking- ( why was it always claws? she just dodges an attack with gritted teeth and a hand on the bag at her thigh. )

Well--no. Not really. [Maketh's face softens briefly.] We are looking.

Maketh stops herself from flinching back. People shouldn't talk like that. Not about themselves. But she smiles, because in the end it's her job to be professional. "All right, then. Who--what is your brother's name? So I can make sure the others know to protect him. Anyone with medical training is highly valued."

Is that so...

[If the winds seem like they're picking up, they are.]

Not sure how long they're planning to keep us here, but while I'm around, I'll protect the ones who can't fight.

Sure.

[Yes! It gives him the excuse to play with it for a little while.]

So how long have you been here?

[A "closed system" sounds so final, when it's said like that. With a mind naturally inclined towards puzzles and riddles and their evasive but firm solutions, L doesn't want to accept that there's no way out... but then again, it's not like he can deny magic with the same easy confidence he used to. After all, he is aware of the existence of Shinigami. The world as he knows it, adhering to its rules of logic, is broken whether or not he truly died.]

Is that your background? Physics? Or are you merely a dedicated hobbiest who has devoted a great deal of thought to these details?

Someone stuck you in a trunk?

[Ushahin frowns. People can be horrible to animals when they consider them to be inferior. Fetch makes his way down Ushahin's arm and takes off, flying over to where Crow is. He eyes the other bird up and down, judging the other in his own bird way before harrumphing again, this time with approval. He'll do. Fetch does miss having a flock around.]

That's terribly cruel. At least you are out now and speaking quite well.

"Hmmm. Of course," he says like a reasonable person would. "I'm sure there'll be something. Thank you for your assistance EDI. I'll be fine from here on out."

He's still a bi lost, but at least has some pointers in the right direction now. It'll all work out for him in the end, Sato is sure.

"Hmm, how does that old saying go? There's nothing to fear but fear itself?" Sato smiles. Appearing to consider it briefly, he adds after a beat, "You know what? I was never a big fan of Monster Hunter before. A little too much grinding for my tastes. But once I've had a chance to have a look around, I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a try again." Except, you know, in real life.

It actually sounds quite exciting.

There's just the matter of guns and ammo first.

As far as I know, you're the only bird I've seen since I've arrived. I suppose there could be others, but I don't think so. And if there was, I'd have asked them already too. Maybe the closest thing is me? My surname is Albatross, after all. [He shrugs, grinning.] See, if there's truly a way out, the so-called gods might have found it by now. But I also don't totally trust them to that, so it's up to the rest of us if we want to leave.
