Event Log: Dead Men Walking

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Dead Men Walking event!
Where: All around the city
When: September 14th-September 20th
Warnings: Zombies. Walkers. The Infected. Zeds. The undead. Risen.

Everything seems more or less normal in Hadriel on the 14th - at least at first. But wait, who's that over there? Why are they walking so weird? Are they feeling okay? Wow, did they just try to bite you? Oh shit, you might've seen a movie like this before. That was definitely a zombie.

But hey, it's no big deal. A few zombies here and there are pretty easy to avoid, especially when you can outrun them without too much trouble. They're only really dangerous if they're fast or if there are a lot of them, and they sure aren't fast! Only - well, before long, there are a lot of them. You can hardly go outside without running into one, and mobs form quickly. Went out for supplies? Let's hope they didn't follow you - you might get stuck in that shop, mobile corpses pounding on the door. Oh, and don't stand too close to the windows of your house. They'll be more than happy to smash the glass trying to get you.

Don't worry, though! A hard blow to the head will take these zombies out, and you'll be sitting pretty, as long as none of them bite you. None of them bit you... right? Wow, what a relief. We're all glad you're not concealing a life-threatening zombie bite from your friends! Who would do that, anyway? Now if you can manage that until the 20th, you'll be safe and sound as the zombies shamble out of the city. Hopefully you won't be shambling with them.

Okay, so he's a slightly disheveled posh doctor. Same difference, he's still got a waistcoat, and the only other person Gren's known that wears one of those is fucking Crane, who's a douche. Gren instinctively associates waistcoats with douchiness.

Despite the guy's snippy attitude, Gren follows him up the stairs, limping a little because of the whole chunk taken out of his calf thing. Kind of a hindrance to walking, having a giant bite-hole in your leg.

"Mostly just hurts like a bitch," he says, and he's figuring that it's probably a good thing that he hasn't gotten any of those symptoms yet. Could just be because he got bit in an extremity or something and whatever gross pathogen causes zombification just hasn't spread far enough yet, or it could be having a hard time because he's technically not human. Who knows, this sort of medical shit is way over his head. Gren doesn't know much about how diseases work.

But the fact that the doc says if we can treat you is good, right? That means there is a treatment, there's something that can actually be done about this shit. Options are good. Gren's liking the idea of having an option right now.

"So what's this treatment? You got like a drug or some shit?"

If Simon had options, the guy would be on a stretcher and a tourniquet already applied, but the clinic isn't exactly designed for that and the only rooms they have that are prepared to hold patients--and potentially aggressive ones--are upstairs. They've made do, and by now Simon has already learned that there's really only one option. "I'd prefer that option, truly. There's only one way to stop the progression of the disease once it's begun, and that's through amputation." At least he didn't ask how attached Gren is to his leg. "Otherwise, I can give you something for the pain, and ensure you won't hurt anyone else once you turn." His face is serious, steady as he closes the door behind them, stepping over to the small table that serves as a counter. "I wish I had better answers for you."

Gren hears the word 'amputation' and it's like his brain suddenly hits the brakes. It's a twelve-car pileup in his brain and for a few long seconds, he's just staring dumbly at this asshole like he suddenly can't comprehend basic fucking English. He misses the rest of it, which is fine because it's not anything important; he's more stuck on the fact that not dying equals losing his leg.

"What the fuck?"

At least those are words, and they're in English. His brain still hasn't fully rebooted, it's just basically muscle memory to swear.

"The fuck do you mean, fuckin' amputation? Look at me, asshole, does it look like I got a lot of limbs to spare over here?"

Granted, the whole turning into a zombie thing is equally as unacceptable as losing his leg, because he's not dying fucking twice, but seriously. If he loses the leg, how's he supposed to get around? What's he supposed to do, hop his ass across the city? Be some sorry asshole limping around on a crutch? It's bad enough that he's missing the arm, he can get by without the arm. It's hard to get by without a leg.

"You're fuckin' holdin' out on me. C'mon, there's gotta be something other than hacking shit off of me."

The look on his face is one Simon isn't a stranger to. Shock, incomprehension, denial. Even in his time, they can't save everyone. People still die. Especially without the resources to treat them as they should be treated. His expression doesn't change at Gren's heated response, remaining grave.

"I wish I were. I wish there were anything more. But whatever it is these things are carrying, it doesn't respond to any of the antibiotics I have, and the change is inevitable. The best I can do is give you a fighting chance, but you won't even have that if we don't act now. Unless there's something else you can tell me, something that might make your physiology different from a standard human, I don't have any other options."

He almost lets himself hope for a moment. He isn't looking forward to performing an amputation under these circumstances, either.
