On the 24th of September, you wake up and everything seems pretty normal. You've got to head in for your shift at the guard, or at the clinic, or wherever else people go- maybe you're visiting a friend, maybe you're checking out the library, but either way as soon as you step out onto your street, you're in a foreign location.
No, you haven't been transported anywhere weird. Well, not by anything other than your own two feet. And hey, you could recognize a landmark and know your way back from there! But somehow you turn left instead of right and now everything is confusing again. It's not that the city itself is changing, but rather, it's your ability to take direction and move in the way that you think you should.
On top of all that, of course, is the strange inversion of most abilities. Everything is topsy turvy with your various powers or individual skills, so be on the lookout for some odd changes. Maybe you're usually pretty good at reasoning and now you can't think your way out of a paper bag, or maybe you have fire powers that start shooting icicles instead- either way, it's weird. Hopefully you can deal with it without injuring yourself too much, but... well, it's kind of difficult to make any guarantees when you can't even find your way to the clinic when you accidentally break something.► This log covers September 24th-October 2nd.

[...oh right lmao these people didn't know that]
Water can kill me. And don't you dare think about using that against me when I get out of this! I'll make you wish you'd drowned just now!
[WARRICK THIS IS NOT HELPING]
no subject
What happens if it rains?
[Being able to be killed by water would suck, wow. Signs taught him that much.]
no subject
[this is dumb]
no subject
So um, okay. I guess I need to uh, find something that works as a boat, then.
no subject
That would be great. Or at least something that can make this stupid cloak fly straight for ten seconds. What's wrong with everything?
no subject
[Which is unusual, but not unusual enough to make any other explanation make more sense.]
A bunch of people are having their magic go weird, or are getting totally lost, or whatever. I mean, I shouldn't be anywhere near here.
[But maybe it's good that he is, though he's really not sure how he's going to manage to find something that'll work to get Warrick off that island without getting wet, and then manage to get whatever it is back here to actually use it.
But okay, one step at a time. Look for something useful nearby.]
So uh, how much water is actually dangerous to you? Like, can you not get splashed at all, or...?
[Because that'll change what will work and what won't.]
no subject
I would really rather not get splashed. It hurts like hell and I don't want to test the limits.
[He's got some permanent scars on his side from a stupid accidental splash. But...man. At least mystery dude is taking it seriously.
...well.]
What's your name, anyway? Where were you trying to go?
no subject
[So it could be more of a challenge. Making a bridge of some sort to the island is probably going to be the best bet, though, if he could find something long and sturdy enough anyway.]
I'm um, Chris. I was trying to get back home, but I don't live anywhere near here, so...
[It was a failure.]
How about you? Where were you going?
[While he's talking he's looking around, trying to find something useful in the scattered rubble piles without venturing too far to be able to get back or leave hearing range.]
no subject
[Sounded like an Earth name.]
I had to make a food run. It's been a few days. [Which is lame to him, but he realizes in a second that it...might sound Concerning.] I don't have to eat very often. That's normal for me.
[For what it's worth, Warrick's keeping an eye on him... Besides, he figures that having a voice to focus on probably helps that whole direction issue.]
no subject
Yeah? That sounds uh, really convenient, actually.
no subject
...It is. [Especially here, where everything was weird and awful even when food was freely provided.] I just wish I didn't have to be so careful about what I eat. Has to be dry. You know. Sleeping isn't much of a thing for me, either.
[he's just bragging now]
no subject
[He needs to sleep a lot, and that's far easier said than done for him for several reasons.
And okay, finally something semi promising. It looks like the remnants of a shipping pallet, and it would probably float high enough to avoid any spillover from the sides by the water. It's just a matter of getting it into the river, and then to and from the island.
He supposes he could just push it, though that sounds unappealing.]
Hey, uh, I think this might work.
no subject
Hmn? [He cranes his neck to see what it is that Chris has found and instinctively grimaces. Anything short of a solid bridge with high walls would get that reaction, to be fair.]
...I guess it looks sturdy from here. [Besides, he has his boots and coat... As adverse as he is to that whole splashing idea, they would protect him from a little of that.] Is there a rope? I...might have something that works, if you don't.
[Maybe.]
no subject
[Finding the pallet was lucky enough, but there definitely doesn't seem to be any sort of rope or even cables or sturdy string. And okay, gonna try to move this, but... It's heavy, and Chris is neither the strongest nor most graceful person, but eventually figures out a way to "walk" the pallet toward the water up on its side. He eventually lays it down by the bank, ready to be pushed into the water at the right time.]
no subject
...Or, uh. He did.]
I have a sister. I know how to braid. This is so stupid.
no subject
It's totally not stupid if it works.
[Whatever works is worth it.]
no subject
[Especially since he's glaring at the bandages like they just insulted his mother. He carefully ties the ends together, then flounders about, somehow unable to cross the lines together in the correct pattern.]
I wish someone else was doing this so I could just strangle them with the bandages for wasting time. [uh] Augh, Selva would turn me into socks for this. It shouldn't be that hard! Braids are simple!
no subject
[His voice is as reassuring as he can manage, sitting down next to the pallet on the shore to rest for a moment, especially if he might have to get back into the water to get the end of the bandages if Warrick can't toss them the whole way.]
I'm not going anywhere.
no subject
[screeches]
I'm not going anywhere either, and that's the whole point, I want to get off this stupid-if-convenient island, and I want to get out of this stupid underground city, and I want to go home and see my sister and my friends!
[He's only getting more agitated as he goes on, anger fueled by the fact that he has somehow knotted his fingers together and now has to very carefully untangle himself again with four fingers total free.]
So as far as I'm concerned, thank you very much, I am as tranquil as I could possibly be given the circumstances! Finally, a braid.
no subject
He does that by entirely ignoring that the response is a little over the top, especially since he can empathize with missing people. Chris doesn't have any siblings, but he misses his parents and his girlfriend.]
I uh, can't help you with the getting out of Hadriel part, but hopefully you'll be off the island pretty soon. Do you um, think you can throw the end of that to the bank, or should I come get it?
no subject
Fine -- fine. I'll throw it. But the braiding didn't make them much heavier, just more stable.
[That said, he tangles the spools together to weigh that end down more and chucks it as far as he can while keeping a tight grip on the other. It doesn't quite reach Chris, but he had a lot of bandages to tie together. Good thing he steals so much.]
no subject
Okay, well, I guess we'll see if they're stable enough.
[He pushes the pallet carefully into the water, trying to avoid putting too much stress on the bandages as he does so.]
Think you can pull it to you? Then once you're on, you can toss me the end you have and I'll pull you back this way.
[Since it's more to guide the pallet than really drag its full weight, hopefully it'll work.]
no subject
Ohhhh-kay. Okay.
[...Okay. Shitfuckdamn, okay. Right. Throw... Throw the thing. The, uh, the bandages. Over to Chris. Right. Okay.
He does that. Sort of. It definitely doesn't reach the bank.]
no subject
He has to purposefully not think too much about it in order to will himself to get in the river again, taking a moment to pull off his hoodie and the shirt-jacket underneath so they wouldn't get resoaked. He carefully slides into the water, making sure not to splash, and soon reaches the end of the bandage rope before heading back to shore and hauling himself out.
He didn't get eaten, so all good even if he's now cold and sopping wet yet again.]
Okay. Lets give this a shot. You ready?
[He doesn't want to start pulling and Warrick to lose his balance or something.]
no subject
[Very, very carefully he lowers himself down into a sitting position, drawing his legs up and hugging them tight to his chest like a child. He's not overly confident in himself right now.]
Um... [ffffffuck] Yes. I think so. Just... Just get it over with.
