Anything to avoid actually answering his questions, anything to just not talk about what happened while talking about it. Reminding him of his inaction, taunting him about his brother's death and just being here, reminding Sans that he ultimately failed to do what he set out to do.
It's easier to stop on the eggshells than try. But being reminded of failure struck something in Chara's SOUL from a long time ago, now that they decide to step over the shells instead.
