INTRO LOG: A TAXING JOURNEY

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for December. Watch your step!
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: December 10th-17th
Warnings: Taxxon-related violence, teeth shoes, general unpleasantness, mass confusion.

You wake up in the dust of the colosseum with no shoes on, regardless of the state of your feet when you arrived. There's dust covering your clothing and in your hair, but other than that, there's no signs of injury or bruising. You're also not alone- nearby, there are others, either still passed out or just waking up like you are. Feel free to take solace in that fact. Or don't- some of you aren't human, and are clearly not great people either. No offense.

To your left, there is a door in the wall of the arena, supposedly leading to the halls which will then show you to your freedom. To your right, and scattered haphazardly on the ground, are a myriad of teeth shoes. These shoes might be better than going barefoot right now, but good luck finding a matching set, let alone one that fits you.

When you do eventually try to escape, be careful. The halls are crawling with Taxxons. Large and grotesque, these caterpillar-like creatures have circular mouths and multiple rows of sharp teeth. Their sense of smell is impeccable, and they will stop at nothing to feed when they scent blood. So, you know, try to avoid stepping on anything sharp on your way out.

All done with the horrible monsters and awkward greetings? Try your hand at exploring the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies until your little heart is content. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[Z shrugs. He might be right.] If you're going exploring, take supplies in case you get lost.

[An introduction like that means she should be impressed.

So she isn't, on principle. She means no harm, though, just a little playful teasing.]

Really? I've never heard of you guys.

[What is with people down here not being impressed? Man, Team Gurren is new, sure, but they've got a buncha guys stealing gunmen to follow them! Maybe the word just hasn't spread as far as this pit. Whatever. He will not let your lack of awe throw him off stride!]

Yeah, well, give it another week or two and we will! Simon and I started out in a pit like this, but we made it to the surface, and now we're never gonna settle for living in a dinky pit like this one! You should come with me when I make it out. Team Dai Gurren's always looking for fresh blood!

[More likely, news of his team hasn't reached her world, but hey, if you're proud of your team, then good for you. That counts for a lot.

Kind of like she's really proud of hers.]

Thanks, but I'm already part of a team. I'm a Power Ranger. I'm from a big city above the ground.

[Hey, it's good to have pride in what you do. He has no idea what a Power Ranger is, but it sounds badass.]

Really? Me and my team were headed for a big city to have a talk with the Spiral King. I don't guess you know anything about him, do you?

Nope, sorry. [She shakes her head.]

How'd you make it out of the pit you mentioned? [Give a girl ideas, Kamina. If you could get out, we can all get out.]

Well, I guess it wasn't gonna be easy.

[Shrug. BUT WAIT, she's asking him to tell her the legend! The saga! The story of Team Gurren!! Puffing out his bare chest a little, he gives her a grin.]

The courage of Team Gurren, of course! It was just me and my bro, Simon, the first time. I'd been to the surface when I was a kid, and he and I were gonna bust out! Simon and his drill are a team like no other, you know? Kid's got a special relationship with the rock, he just knows where to dig. Anyway, we had a great plan, until the Gunman fell through the ceiling. But with Lagann, we beat it and got up to the surface!

[That's...probably not much help. But he's REALLY enthusiastic about it, okay?]

[He's got spirit, for sure. And Z is a good audience, following along in silence. She can definitely sympathize with someone clawing their way to the top -- even literally. She supposes, if she wanted, she could frame her story like that. But the whole Robin Hood thing has its perks, as far as stories go.

So, you see, she appreciates your style.]

Good job getting out! Sounds like it was one heck of an adventure.

Now... Lagann? [Is that a person? A weapon?]

[Hey, she really is a good audience! Not like Yoko, who would've interrupted him like five times already. And now she's asking him about Lagann, which means he gets to talk more about his bro! Alright!]

Lagann's the gunman Simon found while he was digging! Lagann's just a little gunman, doesn't even come up to my shoulder, but he really packs a punch! And when I have my Gurren, Simon and I can combine into Gurren Lagann!

Hey, I have something like that! My teammates and I all have a zord each, and we combine them to form a Megazord. It's this enormous robot that we use to fight monsters when they get into giant robots of their own.

[At least, that's what she's picturing Gurren Lagann like.]

Yeah, that's exactly it! Simon and I combine into Gurren Lagann, and right before I left we found this bigass ship, or it found us. We were about to steal it from this stupid Beastman General, and Simon was supposed to combine with it--Megazord's a pretty cool name, maybe I'll have to use it for when we take the ship! Mega-Gurren kinda's got a nice sound to it, I like it. What about your zord, is it like a Gunman? Like, it's got weapons and stuff? What kind of monsters do you fight?

[This lady's got some style! And she's got a gunman, too? Or a zord. They sound like the same thing, maybe he can recruit her and her buddies to fight with Team Dai-Gurren, too!]

[She hadn't expected to find other Rangers here, and much less someone with tech anything like the kind she's familiar with, so this is a pleasant surprise. Someone who speaks her language, who gets something that's such a big part of her life -- she hadn't realized how much she'd missed being understood. Sure, Kamina's from a different place, and his heroics aren't the same as hers, but it's close enough.]

What if you and Simon both combined with the ship? The Megazord, it's made up of five zords. They're called Delta Runners. Mine's shaped like a truck, with bright flood lights. It turns into one of the Megazord's arms. For weapons... laser guns and a sword, mostly. The monsters we fight are either robots or criminals working for this evil emperor for pay. When we beat them, we arrest them and put them in these little containment cards.

[He grins wider as she talks, clearly just as enthusiastic to have found someone else to talk about this stuff with. No one else he's met has known anything about giant robots, or fighting other robots, or combining, and here she knows all three!]

Say, you've got some pretty good ideas, lady! All three of us combining, the Spiral King better watch out! I don't know about containment cards or whatever, but sounds like you and me are on the same kinda mission!

Glad I could help. [She puts her free hand on her hip.]

I'm heading over to the spires-- [she nods towards them] --that's where people here live. There are still a lot of empty houses and apartments, so you may as well get settled into one. You'll be here a while.

[And there, her smile fades a little, but she shrugs, more for her benefit than Kamina's.]

Spires? Oh, the tall things over there. People live in them? Sounds cramped. Once you sleep under the stars, a cave just seems so much more stuffy, but I guess it is what it is, right? I'm not planning on sticking around for long, though, just you wait and see! We'll be out of here in no time!

[He sounds pretty confident about that, at least. Lead the way?]

They're not too bad, actually. But I guess I'm biased. I spent years on the streets, so anything with a bed is pretty great.

[Ha ha oh Kamina please don't lose your spirit. Z has started to lose hers, and the longer she's here, the more she thinks she'll never get out. And that's dangerous thinking.

Anyway, she's not going to burst your bubble. She likes that bubble and intends to reinforce her own hopefulness.

She nods towards the spires, inviting him along, then starts on her way to them.]

I just finished spending my entire life living in a cave, never even seeing the sun since I was a kid, so I don't think I'm ever gonna get enough of the open air! Living on the surface, man, it was a world apart, let me tell you!

[He's happy to follow along, taking in his surroundings intently even while he keeps chatting. Gotta learn the lay of the land, after all, if he's gonna find its weakness!]

So why were you on the streets? Did your village not have enough caves or what?

[He still...hasn't really had anyone explain the multiple worlds thing to him yet...]

Yeah, the sky at night is amazing. [There really is something to be said about roaming free. Having to find different places to sleep depending on weather and the presence of law enforcement was definitely interesting, and it led to a lot of cool short-term 'homes'. Here, at least, she can focus her efforts on exploring and trying to find a way out.]

I'm from a big city. You had to have money or friends with money to live anywhere half decent, and I didn't have either. So my one goid friend and I slept where we could and, uh, acquired what we needed whenever we got the chance. And we helped other people, too.

[Better to ease him into the idea, maybe?]

[From a city? Man, the surface must have all types. But she says she helped other people--not beastmen, he's guessing, but other humans--and that's good in his book.]

Hey, nothing wrong with that! That's the way Team Gurren rolled, back in the early days. Although the other guys weren't really in it to help people. When we left, it was just me and my bro! I gotta tell you, it's been crazy since then. Fighting beastmen, combining, finding what's left of my dad--I gotta find a way to get back to Simon soon, you know? And I bet your friend needs you, too!

All my friends need me. So does the city. [The whole planet, actually. And if beastmen are like Krybots, then Kamina's world needs him just as badly.

There has to be a way out of here. Kamina has reminded her of all that's at stake, all the reasons she needs to keep hoping, and keep trying.

After a little while, they reach the spires, and Z points at the one she's headed for.] I live on the first floor of that one.

[It's a good thing to remember. He'd thought maybe he was dead, that he could rest knowing he's done his best, but if he isn't...well, he's gotta get back and find out. He stops when she does, hands in his pockets, and offers her a smile.]

Right. I should keep looking for Simon and Yoko, just in case. Maybe I'll come by after, and we can make a plan for scouting the caves!

Sounds good to me. [She smiles. She's done a fair amount of scouting already, but maybe she'll have better luck whenever she and Kamina go. Who even knows? With all the weird stuff that happens here, anything's possible.]

It was good meeting you, Kamina.

Yeah, you too. I'll see ya around, Z.

[With a little salute he turns and strides off, red cape billowing slightly behind him. He's got a mission, and maybe there's not anyone else here from home to help him, but at least he isn't alone here.]
