Event Log: Dead Ringers

What: The event log for the Dead Ringers event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 25th
Warnings: Evil doubles, so we can assume manipulation, violence, murder, and maybe some nasty words
Everything seems normal on the morning of the 16th - actually, everything seems normal about the city for the entirety of this event. Nothing is strange, nothing is obviously wrong. Well, except that the population has mysteriously doubled, and the new residents each look exactly like one of the old residents. So weird! Definitely not ominous at all.
At least until your new double gets down to business. After all, their only goal is to ruin your life, and that can take any form. Smashing your favorite coffee cup? Telling your worst enemy they're right? Kissing someone else in front of your girlfriend? Brutally murdering you and then hiding your body in a closet so they can more effectively destroy your life? The possibilities are truly endless, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill your double first. They're not really open to negotiation, after all - but they sure might pretend to be in order to trick you.
So watch your back, and try to make sure that really is your best friend and not an evil clone masquerading as them. Boy, that would be awkward. If you can stick it out until January 25th, good for you! But if you didn't manage to and your double survives until the end - well, just as a final 'fuck you', there's a chance you'll come back to life and remember every awful thing your double did. Hey, at least that'll make it easier to fix, right?► This log covers January 16th-January 25th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your evil clone happens to take you out, please let us know here, and remember that you will not revive until the event is over.

Focus. On what's. Important. The kid. Think about the kid. The kid who has never been shy about what might happen if they meet themself and he's not gonna start now. Not. Gonna start now.
If it's all a simulation, who controls it?
Not.
If none of it is real, who dictates it?
About.
If it's all just a file name, then who put it there?
To start.
If it's all subject to change -
Now.
Then how can you say it matters.
He's not gonna start now, and he's gonna look the kid, or whatever they are, directly in the eye and say, evenly, like he hasn't just watched his entire world unravel and reravel before his eyesockets:]
You know exactly which one I'm talkin' about, kid.
no subject
So Chara meets Sans's gaze and smiles. If he's going to pretend that his world didn't just break, they'll play along with the joke.]
Now you can't blame me for giving you a runaround, given you rarely gave me a straight answer. But if you answer a question then I'll tell you where I buried the bodies. Fair?
no subject
Very funny.
[It might as well be said through gritted teeth. He holds eye contact with 'em, firmly, unwavering.]
But yeah, okay. Shoot.
no subject
And then....they stop pretending. There's absolutely no emotion left in their voice.]
We reached the absolute. All of you got your ending. But this photo was taken when we got to the Surface again. It was a complete ERASE...yet I was called again.
[So here's their little joke, something the scientist in you might like Sans.]
So in regards to that system....what is two plus one?
no subject
That's the rule. That's his rule, and it's the rule of a lotta people out there, he knows. Once you give a damn, it's hard, real hard, to pull yourself out of it, to remind yourself why it's your policy to never care in the first place.
And Papyrus is no longer the sole exception to that little rule.
They wave a very familiar photograph at him, and he goes - still.
They've been through their room. Through their things. They've been at their house, and now he's wondering, now he's thinking, that maybe that harmless little quip about burying the bodies ain't so harmless after all.
Once you care, you're fucked.
What's two plus one, Sans?
What's s͒y̻s̨t͘e̲mͣ_͠i͔n᷂f̈́ỏr̰m͉a͟t͊ïo̓n͔_͝9̨͂̉6̤͍᷄2̟̝͂ plus one, Sans?
In his pockets, his hands curl into fists. He's breaking a rule here, ain't he? He's breaking...more than one rule. But hey, it seems to be the day for it.
He replies, the word flat, empty, and dead. To match their tone, heh. It's funny. It's hilarious. Everyone's laughing.]
It's you.
cw for abuse/suicidal ideation
[It's so final, those words. And they laugh because his reaction to their question should be considered funny. Tuck the photo away because they're not giving that up to Sans if Chara can help it. It has a date with a special someone.]
Do you understand now, Sans? Why they consider themselves a demon is because they knew. The purpose of their resurrection is power, to collect LOVE until nothing is left. That is who "Chara" is. A blight, a disease on the Surface and the Underground. Their family knew it and attempted to correct it. And when that proved impossible...Chara attempted to fix it themselves.
[It doesn't always start with a blade or a fall. Sometimes it can be nail clippers when you discover one can cut skin. But like most things in Chara's life it escalated until....
....well, I suppose they "fixed" things in the end, didn't they? Ahhahah.]
But I'm supposed to be telling you about my real friends. They're hanging around Hope's temple.
[ehehehe.]
Start digging.
no subject
His jaw feels set, teeth clenched almost hard enough to pop. It shrills coldly across his ossicles, claims with words like demon and blight and LOVE.
He locks his empty sockets with their eyes and for a second, just a second - the lights in there switch off and leave him hollow.
Unmoored.
And then they flare back again, twin sparks that drill into that unflinching red gaze, and he advances.
And he a d v a n c e s.]
No.
[The world's torn from beneath him, ribbons of it coiling around his phalanges like discarded fragments of code, and if he had blood - well, damn, it'd be running crisp and ice-cold through those nonexistent veins of his.
Their family knew it and attempted to correct it.
Chara attempted to fix it themselves.
So why's a kid climb a mountain like that, huh? Lots of legends surrounding Mt. Ebott. And why's a kid climb a mountain like that?
The lights buried in his eyesockets are like chips of ice.]
Hate to break it to ya, kid, but you're wrong. "Dead" wrong.
[Heh. Get it?]
They're a kid. A kid, you got that?
You think there's a single damn thing you've told me that they don't already think about themself? You think they need to hear another word of that, from me or anybody else?
[He shakes his head, his grin a fixed rictus, curving up into the sides of his face as though burned into the bone.]
They've been through enough. They -
[Something in him constricts.]
I've put 'em through enough.
no subject
Chara doesn't flinch under his words and it's likely by this point he might realize it's more than just pretending to be an unflappable demon. This "Chara" can't feel a single thing. But when he advances...
* You equip the Real Knife.]
Is that why you made them choose?
[Sans knows what they mean. Both photographs in his possession and he couldn't be nice enough to just give them the better one to Spare Chara's feelings? Only not, because Sans was Sans and couldn't do it himself. It's what to expect from someone who twisted MERCY around like he did.]
Pretty words will do nothing for them Sans. Don't you think they've heard them enough? "I'm sorry." "It won't happen again.". Like Frisk dealing with those in the Underground, they weren't worth much unless they were good. But how do you define 'good'?
[Sparing everyone? Being a perfect person, a narrator with a nice, yet snarky text? Smiling, even though their Partner had to go through a loop of death? Because big kids don't cry.
You are only worth your SOUL, the Underground said to Frisk.
You are only worth something if you are perfect, the Surface said to Chara.
And in the end, they were not.]
If you well and truly wish to do right by Chara, Sans, then you will give them what they want. Not your SOUL if you wondering. There is not much use in that, considering.
[And Chara smiles, wide and happy because they're always happy.]
Buttercups, once upon a time, worked wonders. Or you can take matters into your own hands. There is only one way this will end, after all.
no subject
You think I don't know that? You think I need you to tell me I screwed that one up? Hell - that it wasn't even the first time?
[You think he needs to hear that they might not, might never forgive him - and that it'd be justified if they never did?
It sits on his chest like a fat worm, an ugly, coiled-up thing that tightens and tightens and tightens around him, that knowledge that sure, maybe he didn't set the path down for these kids to walk, but he nudged 'em down it just the same.
If you have some sort of special power...isn't it your responsibility to do the right thing?
Isn't it his responsibility?
Another one to go on his list of failures. They're stacking up higher, higher and higher, and the further up they climb? Well, hell, didn't he say, once, that thirty...thirty is just a ridiculous number.
And so thirty is where he's gonna stop.
He laughs. It's a dark sound, frosted over with ice and blackened with the memory of dust.]
Sorry, buddo. You're barkin' up the wrong tree.
I don't buy that as a MERCY.
And I don't buy that that's where they're headed.
no subject
For someone who's done what they've done? It is a MERCY. Chara didn't fall the way they planned so they survived. I know you cannot break any bones without dying, but it's an interesting thought to consider how long they were down there, alone and broken, before Asriel found them.
[Might make a few comments easier to understand.]
Chara has already condemned themselves to being where they are. It's the least they could do after destroying their family. Some words and Nice Cream cannot fix what will always be broken. Just as you cannot save Papyrus if I decide to kill him.
[None of them obtained a happy ending. There wasn't one in sight so they blotted out the world together, walked their path until the miles ran out and they could rest.
So shouldn't you be happy Sans? No more Resets! It's all gone! Having this route done meant they saw everything, got 100% completion so now you'll be left alone!]
I suppose at the end of the day I fail to see why you care. Chara is dead and gone, just like the flower may as well be. Hope will resurrect them over and over when they just want to stay in that silence. I may even save them the trouble.
[They've already been judged by themselves, so why not add being killed by themselves too?]
no subject
He tilts his skull to one side and appraises them, coldly.]
Sure. Chara is dead and gone. Y'know who's also dead and gone?
Yeah. Yours truly.
[He taps a phalanx over his sternum, just above where his SOUL is housed. Why's he care? Well, he could say a lotta things. A lotta things and a lotta phrases that begin with creatures like you but...nah. Why bother? Why go there?
He's made that mistake one too many times.]
Lots of people are dead. Lots of us - hell, maybe all of us - died making mistake after mistake after mistake.
[They've all got sins crawling on their backs. That's the one thing they've got in common, huh?]
And if this place is our second chance? Heh, then maybe this is my one opportunity to not screw things up.
I'll take it.
no subject
[The thing about it was there was nothing new. Sans's attacks, dialog and asking for whoever may be listening got old. His surprise and disgust at them resetting got old.
It's a reoccurring theme, isn't it?]
This place...Hadriel. A second chance for all of you. Even though at the end of the day, you are all dust and bones. Well, I'm not here to judge.
[That's not Chara's job, right?]
I just hope at the end of it all you understand what it's like to being told you can't escape consequences and then being told to never come back. What it's like to be Determined but to not want it.
[These things just don't go away. It stays, like a child choosing to walk out and face dragons instead of answering his questions.
Like far away, a child chooses to find a Rabbit Hole and two children that no longer exist.
Sins are not the only things that crawl down your back.]
no subject
He keeps choosing to meet their gaze. He keeps choosing to hold it. He chooses - he chooses. He chooses to give them a second chance. 'Cause Frisk asked him. 'Cause Chara hesitated. 'Cause they stood there with a knife held over him and yet - didn't go through with it.
'Cause they threw water balloons at each other, just for kicks.
'Cause they've got a pretty nice smile, when they mean it, when it ain't the kind of carefully-cultivated, false thing that he's learned to slap on his features a long, long time ago.
'Cause they know how to deliver a joke with a killer punchline.
'Cause there are moments - little moments, but moments - that they stop being the demon, the murderer, the kid who ripped through the Underground at LV 20 and stopped for nobody, not for Papyrus, not for Undyne, not even for the skeleton who actually got off his tailbone and tried to give a damn for once - and they start being a kid.
He chooses.]
You think I need that reminder?
[He's screwed that one up too, and he knows it. Words that've been burned into his skull with how many times he must've said 'em. Words about kids not knowing when to QUIT, how if you're really friends, you won't come back, how you're the type of person who won't EVER be happy.]
Kid. I know.
And that's why I'm sayin' right here and right now that enough is enough.
[Once upon a time.
Once upon a time, someone hurt someone else, who hurt someone else, who hurt someone else. And once upon a time, a kid put their foot down. A kid said no more. A kid said enough.
A kid said this suffering stops with me.]
I might not be the right guy to end it. But it ends.
And if it ends with me, then it ends with me.
no subject
Yeah, a real page turner.
But we've run out of miles and pretty words. It all comes down to this question before they're finally done with him. Before they could ERASE that finally connect with Asriel and then themselves because Chara knows there's no way they could survive that final action.
Chara chooses as well. They chose to die.
* It refused.]
And if they choose to walk down this path? That's all it seems to come down to. If one percent of being bad is enough to condemn Frisk and Chara, then what will you do if they run out of world to walk?
[Because it can end with Sans, sure. But it could also End. And if he sets them up with love...
Well, he already has his warning.]
no subject
[And he can't...say. He can't say if he'll ever cross it, if he'll ever have to make that choice. 'Cause back in the Underground, the possibilities - they were an inevitability. Everyone would die and everyone would live. Some would die and some would live. It was just a matter of which bases were being covered at any given time.
That's kinda incredible, in its own way.
He can't predict a single thing that'll happen here.
Isn't that fascinating?]
And yeah, you heard me just fine, kiddo. Not "when." If.
You ain't an inevitability. Not here.
[And you know what?
Neither is he.]
no subject
But then again, maybe not.
It's just an "If".]
Then I hope you find what you can call a happy ending. As for me...I have things to do and people to meet. If I see you in the near future, I'll be sure to say hello again.
[One way or another, Sans will have to greet whatever future happens. The 'good' Chara, the bad or worse one. That much is certain.
They turn to walk away, their body crumpling back into that hunched over form that once walked out of the Ruins, covered in dust.]
no subject
He could. He could, but he don't. And the worst part is...they're holding him to his word. And no matter how much they'll doubt it and call bullshit, if they weren't certain that some part of him meant it, they wouldn't be turning their back on him right now.
And that's the thing.
They're right.
The second they turn away, he don't trust himself to stay there a second longer, so he doesn't. He nips away and starts off across the city. He had to get to know an awful lotta people, and now? Now he's gotta make sure that they're not all about to pay the price for knowing him.
Victory feels hollow.
This is why he hates promises.
But then, it always does.]
