Event Log: Dead Ringers

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Dead Ringers event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 25th
Warnings: Evil doubles, so we can assume manipulation, violence, murder, and maybe some nasty words

Everything seems normal on the morning of the 16th - actually, everything seems normal about the city for the entirety of this event. Nothing is strange, nothing is obviously wrong. Well, except that the population has mysteriously doubled, and the new residents each look exactly like one of the old residents. So weird! Definitely not ominous at all.

At least until your new double gets down to business. After all, their only goal is to ruin your life, and that can take any form. Smashing your favorite coffee cup? Telling your worst enemy they're right? Kissing someone else in front of your girlfriend? Brutally murdering you and then hiding your body in a closet so they can more effectively destroy your life? The possibilities are truly endless, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill your double first. They're not really open to negotiation, after all - but they sure might pretend to be in order to trick you.

So watch your back, and try to make sure that really is your best friend and not an evil clone masquerading as them. Boy, that would be awkward. If you can stick it out until January 25th, good for you! But if you didn't manage to and your double survives until the end - well, just as a final 'fuck you', there's a chance you'll come back to life and remember every awful thing your double did. Hey, at least that'll make it easier to fix, right?

► This log covers January 16th-January 25th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your evil clone happens to take you out, please let us know here, and remember that you will not revive until the event is over.
glacius: and I won't let you hurt my friends. (I won't let you hurt my planet)

By this point Glacius has heard warning about trouble-making doubles circulating around the network; he's taken some time to secure his own apartment and make sure his roommate is safe for the time being, and done what he could to reach out to his other close friends. Now, with those affairs seen to, he departs for the guard's headquarters to see if a resistance is being organized.

... Imagine his surprise when he arrives upon the scene and sees the two people that usually spearhead such efforts prone on the ground and pinned to the wall like a wilting insect. The stench of blood fills his nostrils; there's crimson painted everywhere...

For a breath-stalling second he thinks he's arrived only to see two corpses, but then Maketh struggles and calls out, seizing the marshal's attention. Glacius curses vehemently and rushes to the injured woman's side, trying to help stabilize her, feeling a hard shock of shame that he didn't come any sooner, that he wasn't hear to help fend this attack off. "Maketh--be still, hold on. I will take you out of here. I will take you to the clinic!"

He's hoping desperately that he can make up for his lapse, but it does not look good.

It doesn't hurt. There's just a great heavy feeling in her chest, cold and strange. She has the urge to cough but can't quite get enough air. She makes odd hiccuping noises, trying to sit up straighter.

How strange. She can't quite feel her hands anymore. Or anything below her waist.

"...check...check him," she manages. "Henry. He--he's hurt."

This time she coughs. It feels wet.

She blinks up at Glacius. Can he heal? She doesn't remember. He seems oddly blurry in front of her. Then she looks down and sees the blade holding her upright.

Oh. That. She'd almost forgotten.

oh good! ;w;

That erratic breathing is highly unsettling... as if this situation wasn't enough so already. Glacius does his best to support Maketh, tries to help her straighten her back so that she can breath more easily, but it's hard--he doesn't want to cause the sharp edges of the sword sticking through her to cause further internal damage. He is woefully unprepared to help with injuries this bad, but he has to try. He casts a glance to his side when the woman urges he check on her friend, but the man's body is completely motionless and pale. He shakes his head.

"I am afraid nothing can be done for him. We must focus on you. I can help you get free from the wall, but I am afraid to remove that weapon for fear of worsening your already considerable blood loss. Are there any medical supplies here that I can use to pack the wound, or do I need to carry you to the clinic with the object embedded?"

"No, he..."

He's not dead. He's not allowed to die. Maketh swallows hard. Tastes metal in her mouth. That thing had her voice, knew things she hasn't told anyone. Secrets. Protocols. It took her phone and got Henry to drop his guard. It could do so much more...

Stars, she's ruined everything.

Maketh tries to look at Glacius, tries her best to smile. It's starting to hurt now. She can't really breathe. "I need you to do...do something for me. Please."

While she can still speak.

She smiles. Coughs. Tries not to wince when pain throbs in her chest.

"The guard. Tell them...Nick Valentine...is in charge now."
glacius: (Head bowed.)

Glacius looks to Maketh, shock in his glowing green eyes that quickly shifts into realization, and then pain. He shakes his head, wants to tell her that he can't do that because she is still in charge, because she's going to make it through... but his species are not the type to lie, and he can't even trick himself into believing that. He can see the way her breath has stopped coming, the way blood is flowing more sluggishly from that fatal wound. The ice alien bows his head sorrowfully.

It's another failure tacked onto the growing list in this cave. No matter what he does, no matter how hard he tries to redouble his efforts, something always seems to go wrong. His focuses his energy intensely somewhere, and then people elsewhere slip through the cracks. He is just one being--a vastly powerful one, yes, but singular... and for the first time since he set off into the galaxy greater and started working on his own, that isn't enough. The gods' influence extends impossibly deep; they can alter their prisoners' environment and create malevolent forces on a whim. They can be fought, but never without casualties...

"...It will be done. And Maketh... I'm sorry," the ice alien whispers to the dying woman, cursing himself that he can't do anything more save for offer her useless apologies. "I should have come sooner."

Maketh smiles as best she can. "No. You...it's okay."

The guard will rally. Glacius will tell Nick and they'll do what is needed. He's a good, trustworthy man.

It's going to be okay.

She feels her breath hitch. Things are going fuzzy in front of her. Glacius is nothing but a strange blur. "It's going...going to be..."

Okay.

Maketh sighs just once, then stills. And it's done.

"It is not okay--" Glacius starts to protest, but then any other words die in his gills when he feels her breath hitch, and he knows he hast to act. He has to go get her help, before...

... It's too late.

The realization rolls through him heavily, like a great and powerful wave crashing down upon his shoulders and forcing him under roiling waves. Maketh's body isn't moving any more--not even her chest, no pained or labored breathing moving her ribcage-- and her expression has gone empty. The ice alien curses again, bows his head sorrowfully... but he ultimately knows he does not have time to sit and mourn. Whoever did this to the two guardsmen before him is likely still out there, and if he could not aid her here and now, then he will honor her loss by carrying out her instructions and making sure this cruelty is stopped before it can spread too far.

He'll return to remove the bodies shortly and make sure they are laid somewhere more peaceful... for now, he has a job to do.
