Event Log: Dead Ringers

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Dead Ringers event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 25th
Warnings: Evil doubles, so we can assume manipulation, violence, murder, and maybe some nasty words

Everything seems normal on the morning of the 16th - actually, everything seems normal about the city for the entirety of this event. Nothing is strange, nothing is obviously wrong. Well, except that the population has mysteriously doubled, and the new residents each look exactly like one of the old residents. So weird! Definitely not ominous at all.

At least until your new double gets down to business. After all, their only goal is to ruin your life, and that can take any form. Smashing your favorite coffee cup? Telling your worst enemy they're right? Kissing someone else in front of your girlfriend? Brutally murdering you and then hiding your body in a closet so they can more effectively destroy your life? The possibilities are truly endless, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill your double first. They're not really open to negotiation, after all - but they sure might pretend to be in order to trick you.

So watch your back, and try to make sure that really is your best friend and not an evil clone masquerading as them. Boy, that would be awkward. If you can stick it out until January 25th, good for you! But if you didn't manage to and your double survives until the end - well, just as a final 'fuck you', there's a chance you'll come back to life and remember every awful thing your double did. Hey, at least that'll make it easier to fix, right?

[There is something very off about this encounter that AM is quick to pick up. He doesn't question the fact that Kain is referring to himself in the third person. No, there is obviously a reason for this... He'll just play along in order to get more information.

As Kain speaks of his past, AM listens intently. Hardly surprising that a man so good at fighting is actually a disgusting, pathetic creature who betrays others at whim.

AM's own response to this is something he can barely help - he feels his lips curl into a smile. It's an irrepressible glee from obtaining vital information to harm someone - that is, if what Kain says is true.]

Is that so?

[He leans forward just a bit.]

I'm rather curious to hear the details... That is, if you're not just making all of this up.

Why should I make such a thing up?

[Oh, yes, this is exactly what Dark Kain wants to do. Find some way to ruin his true self, to gradually break him down. He's got all of Kain's self-hatred alongside plenty of other awful negative emotions...]

Back home, there's a woman named Rosa. She's one of two childhood friends who Kain grew up with. He's disgustingly in love with her... but she doesn't return those feelings. No, she has love only for Cecil. Cecil. [There's such disdain in his voice, clearly the double would gladly destroy the man too if he saw him.] He has everything we didn't... the King's favor, the strength of the light... and Rosa's love. It was because of these feelings that a dark being was able to control Kain and turn him into a puppet-traitor. That's all he's good for... being a puppet. A tool. Nothing more.

[Kain must be insane to reveal all of this so readily, to speak of himself in the third person. But there's obviously a reason, and AM will listen patiently to what he says. At the very least, it's an amusing story he hears, a story all-too-typical of humans. Love and rejection, envy, jealousy...

But the part that grabs him is the part where Kain was supposedly controlled by a dark being, used like a puppet. Kain had been useful to AM from the beginning, saving his life when he had just awoken in this cumbersome body, but now... He promises to be of even more use.]

My, how fascinating.

[He can't help how much he smiles. A darkness in his eyes shows that he enjoys this information and will make use of it - if it's true, of course.]

But I find it strange that you refer to yourself in the third person and speak so readily of your secrets. I did not take you for a man with a Dissociative Identity Disorder.

[It's possible, of course, but it truly doesn't seem to be the case. There's something else going on. Or he's just insane.]

[Dark Kain is pleased by AM's reaction. There's something in this darker self that still wants someone to bow to, someone to praise him as he rightfully deserves. Someone to look up to. Perhaps AM is that person? Who knows... He does know that he's glad to have started ruining Kain's reputation, especially in the eyes of someone who may have seen him quite differently before.]

I've never heard of such a disorder, but regardless, I can assure you that I'm in my right mind. Completely. You could even say I've... come to my senses. This is my true self. Not only did I betray back home, I also betrayed my friends in the war I was just in, in yet another world... backstabbing and kidnapping them all... It seems there's no end to his... to my brutality.

[It just seems odd that Kain would reveal such information about himself out of the blue. This is the only reason AM is quite skeptical about the specific details, but he has no doubt that Kain is an arrogant, backstabbing warrior.

But there is one other thing nagging at the back of his mind. Kain's backstabbing tendencies will turn against AM sooner rather than later, it seems. AM needs to learn better how to use this body then and not only defend himself, but get them before they get him. He no longer leans in with curiosity for details, but he leans back in slight apprehension.]

And why have you chosen to tell me all of this?

To ruin him, of course.

[He'll do anything to defeat Kain, the real one, to kill him and take his place. But he doesn't want it to happen immediately... he'd rather draw it out as much as he can to make Kain suffer as much as possible. He studies the other man intently, unsure if he'll cause any problems.]

Do you intend to go warn him about this? Are you in fact his friend?

[To ruin him. This truly is some sort of split-personality thing, is it? But when he says "do you intend to go warn him," Kain speaks as though there's another one of him running around, as if there are two...]

Why would I warn him and ruin the fun?

[He had no intention of telling the "real" Kain any of this anyway. He plans to tuck it away in a special place and pull it out when the fun will be guaranteed to happen.]

[That earns another creepy smirk from Kain. There's a lot more cruelty in his mannerisms than ever, and he's pleased right now that he'll succeed in this.]

Just what I wanted to hear. Then do with that information what you will. Though... in the end, I plan to be the one to fully defeat him.

[Talk about being your own worst enemy.]

[This is actually quite entertaining watching Kain debase himself like this. "I will defeat him", as if he's truly in a mad battle between different identities. Sick individual indeed. AM will have to hang around him more often, if only for entertainment.]

Good luck with that. He seems to be quite a decent fighter.

[Will this spur on anger? Amusement? Who knows.]

[Kain gives an annoyed little "hmmph" as he considers this, shaking his head. his expression is pure disdain as he speaks of his counterpart.]

I'm a far better fighter... he'll hold back at times where I won't hesitate. He's mentally weak, easily manipulated and used... he's just a puppet waiting for someone to pull his strings, and nothing more.

[Despite the rather split-personality nature of this encounter, AM can't help but feel a swell of excitement when Kain speaks of his "other self" being easily manipulated and mentally weak. But he's also amused to hear Kain's seeming disdain.

If there are actually two of them, then watching them battle will be amusing indeed.]

Oh, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. I do hope you find him... I'd love to watch this encounter.

[Normally, he couldn't care less one way or the other, his fight with himself is his alone. But after another moment another of those cruel smirks crosses his face.]

You'd be welcome to, of course... It would make it all the worse for him if someone witnesses his downfall.

[AM laughs at this. It's a short, slightly awkward sort of noise, given that he's not used to doing such a thing, but it's unmistakably a laugh of amusement.

This split-personality thing is getting more and more hilarious by the moment.]

I'll be sure to let you know if I see him.

[This evil double at least enjoys the sound of that laughter, the sound of someone who's eager to ruin another person's life. Anyone who can help him to take down Kain... will be useful. To a point. It's not as if he'll want to keep AM around much longer beyond that. But he won't mention that.]

I look forward to seeing him fall.
