Event Log: Dead Ringers

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Dead Ringers event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 25th
Warnings: Evil doubles, so we can assume manipulation, violence, murder, and maybe some nasty words

Everything seems normal on the morning of the 16th - actually, everything seems normal about the city for the entirety of this event. Nothing is strange, nothing is obviously wrong. Well, except that the population has mysteriously doubled, and the new residents each look exactly like one of the old residents. So weird! Definitely not ominous at all.

At least until your new double gets down to business. After all, their only goal is to ruin your life, and that can take any form. Smashing your favorite coffee cup? Telling your worst enemy they're right? Kissing someone else in front of your girlfriend? Brutally murdering you and then hiding your body in a closet so they can more effectively destroy your life? The possibilities are truly endless, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill your double first. They're not really open to negotiation, after all - but they sure might pretend to be in order to trick you.

So watch your back, and try to make sure that really is your best friend and not an evil clone masquerading as them. Boy, that would be awkward. If you can stick it out until January 25th, good for you! But if you didn't manage to and your double survives until the end - well, just as a final 'fuck you', there's a chance you'll come back to life and remember every awful thing your double did. Hey, at least that'll make it easier to fix, right?

► This log covers January 16th-January 25th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your evil clone happens to take you out, please let us know here, and remember that you will not revive until the event is over.

The other Carlisle looks peeved, his nose wrinkling as he eyes Rey with absolute disdain. He failed to fool Glacius into thinking he was the real thing; he refuses to be a failure here, too. That is where he and his counterpart, the inadequate whelp of the Longinmouth line, will differ.

"I wasn't asking you to do this," he hisses. "That wasn't a question, up for debate for a tool."

His eyes narrow, those slate eyes of his aglow, alive. Burn this place to the ground, Miss Rey.

It's clear to Rey now what that girl who had shown up with the throng of visitors a few months back was talking about. What made Carlisle such a threat despite his bumbling, nervous demeanor that made him seem more benign than he apparently was.

Only it doesn't seem that he is making this demand out of desperation or self-defense. There is no fear in those words he utters and that expression he holds. Certainly does not belong to a man who has babbled on and on about 'making amends' with people he feels he's wronged.

This is something more sinister. And something she has come across already.

"No," Rey flat-out replies, once she realizes that she feels no inclination to submit to the double's demands. Why that is, she doesn't know. But she isn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

As she denies him, the other Carlisle's nose wrinkles, a shade of confusion coloring him. It doesn't feel as though she's fighting him -- it's more like his compulsion has nothing to take hold of, nothing to grasp. He knows she has some metal parts in there, having felt them when healing her, but she is mostly alive, isn't she?

"No?" he barks, fury rising. "What do you mean, no?! I said to burn this place down, and you're going to do it!"

As his outrage grows, so does Rey's suspicions. She arches a brow at his peculiar response.

"No," she repeats, even more bold than her last response to his order. "Am not going to be your tool."

She does notice that there is something going on with 'Carlisle'. Not just the nature of his words, but his voice itself sounds different. Like he's attempting to do more than just demand this of her.

He is trying to make her do it. It wouldn't be the first time someone has tried, anyway. And that's what boils her blood even more.

For a moment, all she sees is red. Any conscious thought takes a backseat in her mind when she throws her fist back, before swinging it at the double's face. Snarling between her teeth, "Do your own dirty work, asshole."

There's no question now what gave him that bruise.

From the other Carlisle's irritation rises further uncertainty. She's responding as though she heard him and understood what it was he demanded of her, but he cannot feel her will bucking back against his, as one might when trying to dominate the mind of another. He tried twice, and to no avail. From that, he draws two conclusions:

1. He cannot control her for whatever reason
2. He's in trouble

He can tell the second conclusion is absolutely true as she swings at him; luckily, he sees it coming and steps back quickly enough to dodge, but he nearly falls over his own legs in the process, much like the real Carlisle would. Like original, like double.

The double growls, not willing to accept that thought. He's not a failure like his counterpart. If this tool is no good, he'll find another -- already, his mind reaches out subconsciously, looking for someone nearby who will either do as they're told, or help protect him from Rey, as he's not sure she'll let him go now that she has an inkling of what he's trying to do, what he's out to destroy.

Or he'll take a tool and an unwitting protector, if there's one out there. He's not picky.

For some reason, it seems that the doppelgänger's plan isn't working on Rey. Rather than wasting time speculating the reasons why, she starts to approach 'Carlisle' for another strike--

And then a challenger appears.

No doubt either the 'tool' that the double was looking for, or an ally like the many others here.

"Are you k--" Rey stops herself, taking a step back before flinging a hand at the imposter behind Shadow. "He is fucking one of them."

Whether or not Shadow will believe her because of his own bias or because the doppelgänger's influence has more success here than it did on her, she'll find out in a matter of seconds.

Shadow appears, and just like that, the double finds that his luck is turning around. With Rey having visibly swung at her, she clearly seems to be the aggressor here -- it could be easy enough to convince the hedgehog to help him without any need for his magical influence. However, Shadow is not as blindly loyal to Carlisle as he could be: they've had their spats and their differences, the double knows. To seem too weak may not be the safest choice, and thus far, acting like his counterpart has gotten him nowhere.

So he goes for his true talent, instead. Though no hunter, the real Carlisle comes from a long enough line of them to know when to wait for an opportunity, to not spring a trap too early. It's better to lie in wait and ambush the target, catch them off-guard. He holds his frightened facade just long enough as Shadow glances back at him, but the moment the hedgehog's eyes are back on Rey, the double strikes.

He doesn't give Shadow a chance to prepare himself, doesn't allow any suspicion within him to breed. He has had his mind dominated before, and by the real clergyman, no less. It is easy enough to do it again.

"She attacked me for no reason!" he hisses, rising to his feet. "Stop her, even if it means you must end her."

Though Rey can take a lot of heavy hits, the sheer force of this speed tells her that this is one impact she is better off avoiding.

At least she's seen Shadow do this before. Back with the zombies. He'd detonated one of her lunchbox explosives. Stupid thing to get flustered over, but it was a waste.

If what she knows about Carlisle is right, then Shadow is only doing what is instructed of him. She'd rather not have to draw her gun on the oversized hedgehog, but she isn't about to make herself a target, either.

Everyone comes back eventually, right?

Mostly everyone, anyway.

"Son of a bitch," Rey hisses between her teeth. Her feet kicking out of the way of Shadow's speed. Moving into the air. The sole of a boot bounces off the wall of a nearby building before she snags a metal railing trailing along the side in one hand. With the other, she pulls out a pistol, and aims for a shot.

Between shooting Shadow or 'Carlisle', she'd rather keep her eyes on the two-faced dead ringer prize.

In good news for the other Carlisle, his original's adventures away from his world have granted him the knowledge of not only what a modern pistol looks like, but why he should avoid getting shot by one, as well. His eyes widen as he recognizes the device and darts for the nearest building, ducking for cover behind the wall.

He trusts his compelled protector will take care of her for him, but should his influence falter, he'll have to force another command upon Shadow and make him comply.
