And he has preferred such methods in the past, time and time again. They don't offer him a permanent solution, but numbing his mind with liquor gives him at least a temporary respite from his own thoughts, ones that are so demanding of his attention. His nerves would bleed him dry if he would allow them to.

But rather than find a productive way to curb his anxiety or actually deal with his problems, he turns to what he has done time and time again. He has always been a creature slow to change.

At least he seems to realize it. "I am aware this is only a temporary truce with my sorrows. I may forget about them for a time, but they are still there."
