Intro Log: Arm Yourself

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for August
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: August 10th-15th
Warnings: Stalkers, newbies, and cute loot!

Sleeping on the cold dirt ground of the colosseum is enough to make anyone uncomfortable. It might be a little worse this month than others, as some of you may be waking up on top of or around various self defense devices (btw: that last one is a taser).

Come to think of it, you'll probably need those. Also in the colosseum and already stalking you are... uh, well, stalkers from the Borderlands game series. Stalkers come armed with claws, teeth, and sharp tails- and what's more, they can turn invisible to sneak up on you. Zap them with your newfound taser or stab them with your jewelry comb knife or just run away screaming- we won't judge, but you have to do something or else they'll kill you and eat your corpse and all sorts of unfortunate things.

Good luck finding a way out. Maybe you can make some friends along the way.

All done and escaped from the clutches of the colosseum? Awesome! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers August 10th-15th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

2. Bridge

Oftentimes being seen sporting a rather similar blood-splattered appearance herself, Rey doesn't balk when she sees the state of Sato's clothes as she's passing over the bridge. What can be seen from where he stands is a makeshift generator of sorts, connecting to the dam farther down the river.

What with having a hand in both the construction and design of the structure, it only made the most sense to Rey that she be the one tasked to tend to it on most occasions. With new arrivals oft comes with new predators, and the last thing she wants is something to threaten the security of their only source of hydroelectricity to supply the underground city.

As she is making her way across the bridge, her pace eases up a bit to survey the stranger. While she can't claim to have met everyone in the city, the timing leaves it more likely to meet the newer faces of their fellow prisoners.

"Sightseeing?" The scar-faced woman's eyes taper, trying to determine whether this guy is a spectator or potential vandal.

Sato smiles and nods agreeably. "Just thought I'd catch my breath. It's been a bit of a walk to get here, although I confess I got turned around several times. And met a number of interesting personalities along the way. It's been quite an eventful day so far.. And yourself?"

The examination goes both ways, especially since Sato hasn't quite figured out the situation in regards to demi-humans here in Hadriel yet. But scars... this lady definitely isn't one.

The surface pleasantries are noted. And while he doesn't strike Rey as a risk of property damage, people can be full of surprises behind niceties and smiles.

"Checking on the dam." She nods to the nearby generator on the other side of the river, where she was headed before deciding to make a brief respite. "Wanted to make sure nothing new comes along to sabotage it."

Her flat monotone and robotic demeanor is about as blatant as the marks on her face. It's the first impression most people are generally graced with when she meets someone.

It matches up well with the vaguely military (or at least guerilla) look, in Sato's opinion. Is he supposed to be intimidated? Maybe it's best to look mildly concerned.

"Why would anyone do that? Besides, wouldn't the 'gods' just fix it up? They seem to be surprisingly generous with their prisoners."

He's a little hazy on a lot of specifics still, despite skimming quite a few of the last month's network entries on his walk so far.
circumitus: Keep up the good work. (it's a 12/12/12 miracle)

"It's more a matter of something than someone, though wouldn't put it past those more inclined towards destroying things." Shrug. One can never be too careful. "And Hope has no idea how hydroelectricity or any form of engineering works. Am usually the one that sees to the structure's upkeep."

Not like Rey would trust Hope to know how to repair the dam, should anything happen to it. Perhaps he would, but she isn't leaving anything up to chance.

"You're something of an an employee, then?" Sato asks, genuinely curious. With it in mind, he turns his head, gaze shifting to the generator and mentally adding it to the list of interesting and potentially useful locations around the city.

She scoffs.

"Employment would imply a regular collaborative effort. More of an off and on contractor with shitty benefits."

Though she did get a pretty cool jacket out of the deal. But sleeves, though.

"Let me guess, part of the contract being that you're not free to leave here either." It's still a guess, but it seems about right from the attitude.

As for his own... well it's a a bit of a swerve from his initially cheerful greeting, but at least a conversationally smooth segue into full seriousness. "It really is a terrible situation we've been put into, as I'm slowly starting to see."
circumitus: I CAN QUIT ANY FUCKING TIME I WANT. (i'm not drunk YOU'RE drunk)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-08-14 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
That response gets a dismissive wave in return. "Suppose it could be worse than that."

If it's one thing Rey has learned, it's that it could always be worse. She could be back in her old situation in her own time.

"More terrible for most, but not so much for others. Some people are dead in their worlds, so really it's either this place or the grave." And that's assuming that they even have one.

Sato isn't sure how much he believes yet, but he's willing to play along... and there's oh-so-many comments he could make on that one.

He settles for a wry smile and a simple, "A small blessing for those individuals, then. Just how many worlds are represented, I wonder? Is everyone here from a completely separate one?"

"Not everyone. It seems that there are a few who share the same worlds. Have never personally met anyone from home here, though."

It's hard to tell from her tone and delivery alone, but in actuality this comes as a relief. Part of Hadriel's appeal is the fact that she doesn't have the reputation that she does in her own world; no one knows or has heard of her and the things she has done. Not that it isn't unwarranted, or that she deserves a reprieve from all of that. Just, admittedly, it is rather nice.

In other words, a little less Marvel vs Capcom, and a little more Playstation All-Stars.

"Oh? If you don't mind my asking, where did you call home before you were brought here?" The military feeling is pretty strong, and now that he's had a good look at her, it's amusing that the one cross-shaped scar on her cheek looks awfully like the one he used to have. Vietnam was such a long time ago, but it's fun to think back on once in a while. Good times. Maybe there's a good war story or two here too.

Come to think of it, he should have asked EDI the same question. Sato has the distinct feeling he would have really enjoyed the answer. Maybe another day.
circumitus: We know how you feel. (kid you're lost in the wheel)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-08-14 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In a way, that is a rather complicated question.

"Never really had a 'home'," she mutters. "Though, if you must know, came from Earth in the year 2153."

Judging by appearances alone, it's difficult to say what time this guy comes from, but Rey has encountered many from various worlds and points in history, including what she can presume are alternate Earths. Still, she can hazard a guess when it comes to speech patterns, mannerisms, and attire.

"Ah, that's too bad," Sato says sympathetically. War orphan, then? Child soldier? Speculation aside, he adds, "I admit I've become a bit of a wanderer myself, but I'm sure 2013, where I'm from, is a simpler time in comparison."

But chitchat on an individual basis can only go for so long, especially when he does in fact have a goal in mind for today. He stretches, pulling away from the railing, and it's then that it's quite obvious he has a pistol stuck into the waistband of his pants.

"I suppose I should be going, and let you get back to your own business. Would you be able to point me in the direction of the armory? I saw it mentioned on the network, but the exact location is a bit vague."
circumitus: (goddammit you're a loose cannon)

Interesting. Rey recalls Chris saying he was from somewhere around that time, in addition to others from much earlier than that. It seems the timelines in which people have been brought from have no perceivable pattern.

To answer his statement, however: "There's no such thing as a 'simpler time'. Things were just as shitty in the Twenty-first Century as they are now."

Spoken like someone who has lived some of that firsthand, despite it being such a significantly long time ago for someone who looks like her. It's hard to forget how messed up things were, even back then, even with the false memories of women who had lived those days.

"The armory is across the river, just passed the Guard headquarters." She points in the direction where she was headed in order to tend to the generator, as well as the dam farther down. Working in the city as she does, it didn't take long for Rey to get street smart about where things were. She has the memories of a certain former street rat and marine to thank for those skills.

"Oh, the City Guard?" He'd seen that mentioned too, but not much. "That's very convenient for them. Thank you for your help, Ms... I'm sorry, I don't think we handled introductions properly at all. I'm Sato," he smiles again, extending one hand.
circumitus: Otherwise you'd be a dad by now. (thank god you're gay)

Shit, she tends to forget the name thing.

"Rey. Never 'Miss'. Just sounds weird."

After a couple seconds studying his expression, she reminds herself of the social norms that is the common handshake; her grip is firm.

Study that expression all you want, Rey, there's nothing to read there beyond the hint of a smile. Sato chuckles and nods in acknowledgement. "Rey. Best of luck with the generator, and I'm sure we'll see each other around here again sometime."

And with a little farewell nod in her direction, he heads off in the direction she'd indicated at a leisurely pace. Although it had only been a little conversational poking and prodding, he had the distinct feeling that she was the kind of person who could be a potential problem in the future.

But he'd cross that bridge when he came to it.
