ASRIEL and ASGORE; find where the heat's unbearable and stay there if you have to
When they disappear, or disappear, it won't take long for Asriel to pick up on the fact that the two most important people in his life have absconded without a word, as if they may have vanished into the ether. Eventually, he'll have to turn to the only option he has. The first thing he tried, when the shock of paws torquing into roots was too much to bear.
He will have to call for help.
And hope, for once, that somebody comes.]
[1/2]
He's been telling himself that's fine. He sits in a silent kitchen. Tries to keep himself from drumming on the table, because the ticking of claws on the surface feels like the rhythm of a clock that isn't there, feels louder than snapping bones in this dead quiet.
But it's fine. Sometimes Chara and Frisk just do things without him. It's normal for best friends to do things together. It's normal to be inseparable, and have so much fun you just... lose track of time, that's all. He can be patient. Waiting can be fun too. He got a lot of practice at that in a place full of pollen and sunshine, calling out over a bed of golden flowers. Count your petals. Count the flowers growing around you. Count the blades of grass. Plan all the fun things you'll do when they come back to you.
It's harder to tell himself that it's fine when suppertime comes and goes, and there's no creak of an opening door or sound of light footfalls. Only the suffocating quiet. Only staring at a cold stove that no-one will use anymore. Maybe... golly, maybe they both came home already, and Asriel didn't notice. Maybe they just forgot to say hi. Maybe he was so caught up in his waiting games that he - he was having so much fun he lost track of time too, ha ha. If they're home... they're probably hungry. They both forget to eat sometimes, so...
He's not too good at making magic food. Can't do anything very complex. But he manages two plates of cheese and crackers, the kind of food they can eat while they play. Something they can munch while hiding in their rooms, if they don't feel like eating at the table.
He knocks at Frisk's door. No response. He knocks at Chara's door. No response.
Maybe they're not there. Or maybe they're sleeping? It's not trespassing if you're sneaking in to leave a snack. If you're just playing like Toriel, leaving something on the floor that says "I care about you." He tries Chara's first, because he's standing closest to it, and that's the only reason.
The pictures are gone.
Hesitantly, he creeps a little further in. Tells himself he's not being a bad friend, tells himself he isn't snooping. Just... setting the crackers down. Checking the places he knows they used to like to hide chocolate, just to see if... if maybe he can replenish their stash for them. It's empty too.
He checks Frisk's room. Their shirt (singular) is missing. All the drawers are empty.
He - he isn't so sure that this is fine anymore.
Next comes their phones. He waits with held breath, alternates between calling Frisk, Chara, Frisk, Chara again.
* Nobody picked up.]
[2/2]
But this isn't about him. Frisk and Chara - they - they must be in danger! They would NEVER leave him without a word. Sure, they keep a lot of secrets from him. Sure, they haven't really... there's something going on, because Frisk told him not to let Sans in if he ever visited, and there was never any explanation, but Asriel could be loyal, Asriel would never doubt his friends.
Even if Chara's already run away from him once.
That - that wasn't about him, either. That was Chara being sad and needing help, not about Asriel. So maybe something's... maybe they need him, and he's not being there for them. Why won't anyone pick up? He's calling and he's calling, but nobody came.
What should... what should he do?
Maybe they'll be mad if he wrecks this, whatever this is. You can't ruin the plan by tattling. Maybe they're hiding from... Sans? Maybe if he tells an adult, that will flag things for - for whatever it is they're scared of, and send someone bad chasing them down? But he doesn't know where to look. He doesn't know why this is happening. Hadriel's - it's such a big place, and he doesn't have a network of roots sprawling across the whole underground anymore. He's just one kid with two short little legs, and a lot of ground to cover.
Maybe this is silly. Maybe they really are just playing, and they just... don't feel like playing with Asriel, so they're ignoring their phones. It's not even been all that long. Asriel, you worry about such stupid things. You're such a crybaby, Asriel.
Oh.
He didn't notice he'd started crying.
He's... Dad is here. Maybe he'll... maybe he'll know something.
Asriel sits in an empty room, on an empty bed, and dials Asgore's number. He hiccups, sniffles, counts the rings with his throat seeming to squeeze tighter and tighter by the second, already bracing himself for - nobody picked up, right? Maybe his phone is just broken, ha ha! Maybe that's all this is!]

The Spire apartments are too small for four. But perhaps the housing district. He is still certain he does not deserve this, but The Internet was right. He must do what he can; do some good now, even if it is not truly atonement.
By the time the phone rings, he has already return to the home he shares with the other monsters, and long since prepared food for himself and everyone else. He's alone now, but he would have answered it immediately either way:]
Howdy, Asriel! [His tone is jovial. If he is not living with his son yet, at least it is good to speak on the phone!]
no subject
Asriel hiccoughs directly into the phone, his voice thick and snotty and warbly and distorted by great, interrupting sobs as it all just pours out in one big rush:]
D-Daaaad! It's been hours and I've been doing my best to be good and wait but they missed supper, and - and they're not home! I looked in their rooms, and they're not there, and their stuff isn't there either, and - and that means someone must have took it and I didn't even notice even if I've been here for all this time, and they're not picking up their phones, and I've been calling and calling, and I thought maybe it was 'cause my phone was broken, but you answered, and...
[Calm down. Calm down, Asriel. Crybaby fits won't do any good. Crying never solves anything. You know you're only pretending to be worried about them, anyway. You know an empty thing like you can't really care about other people. You're just worked up for selfish reasons. So quit the spoiled act, and do something USEFUL. Flowey may have been awful, but at least he knew how to not be dead weight.]
Frisk and Chara, Dad, they... they're gone. They haven't come home. Their stuff isn't here. I mean... we don't... we don't really have a curfew or a bedtime or anything anymore...
[Why would they? A bunch of kids playing House, with no grown-ups to lay down those rules, none of that structure... why would any of them want to force themselves to be the Unfun One, the Uncool One, the one who Gets In the Way?]
But it's getting late. I'm not... I'm not just worrying over nothing, am I? They... um, did they maybe come to visit you, or something?
no subject
[He responds right away, his happy tone gone entirely. Part of that explanation was already spent searching around the house, as if they might have come over and been sitting silently in the living room this whole time, and by now he has already half-written a note. If they haven't come over yet, they likely will not, yet he hates to think of them finding the house empty.
The children may have been taking care of themselves this whole time, but he trusts Asriel's instincts. If he thinks something is amiss, it is. Hadriel can be dangerous. He should have insisted on making the move faster.
Asgore finishes his note, leaves it for whoever may happen by, and hurries out the door.]
I am coming over, Asriel, please wait there. It will be alright.
no subject
[Just have to stay calm. Just have to wait. Maybe... ha, maybe in the time it takes for Dad to walk all the way over here, Frisk and Chara will walk in the door, muddy and giggling and perfectly fine! Wouldn't that be silly? Wouldn't they all have a big laugh together about that? In fact, Asriel bets they'll walk in riiight... now!
...Now.
Now?
...He's being stupid again. Hope is so stupid. The world doesn't actually work like that.]
Um, should... should we tell anyone else? Frisk says I'm not supposed to let Sans in the house, so maybe they'll be mad if he finds out, but... I'm... I'm scared, Dad. I don't - I don't want Chara to disappear again!
no subject
[That - what has Frisk got against Sans? He knows little of their interactions, but he can't imagine Sans made any real attempt to capture them.
But that isn't important right now.]
Don't worry, I will let the others know myself. The more people who are searching, the faster we will be able to find them. We will find them, Asriel.
no subject
[Before they die again. Or... or maybe they just won't ever come home. Maybe they'll hide so good, nobody will ever figure out where they've went.
Maybe Chara has found some other kid, and he'll NEVER see them again.]
Dad... please hurry. It's not safe outside. Maybe they're hurt. Maybe they fell somewhere, and maybe they're crying for help, and nobody's answering!
no subject
[And he is - he can move very quickly for a creature his size, when he has a care to, and no one is eager to get in the way of a rushing Boss Monster. Asriel's words only make him want to go and search the faster, but he cannot do so until he's sure his son is safe.
It isn't long before he's there, knocking at the door.]
Asriel!
no subject
But then Asgore calls out, and he remembers that it makes no sense that Frisk or Chara would knock on the door to their own apartment.
He still bolts for the door, still yanks it open, still all but hurls himself at his Dad, starving for the security and comfort of his father's warm, safe arms.]
D-Dad! Did - did you see them on the way here? They still haven't called!
no subject
I did not. We will go and look - Asriel, did they leave anything here that could tell where they have gone?
[He's not really thinking, yet, that they've run off on purpose. His first instinct is that they were simply waylaid on their way, by some creature like the sharks, or even a stranger from another world. But if he knows where they intended to be, that's a start.]
