You wake up to find a mirror at your bedside - a pretty nice one, too, a silver hand mirror perfect for fixing your hair in. Only when you try to do that, it's not your gorgeous reflection that you see. It's something else - a terrible future, just about as bad as anything you could imagine for yourself.

Maybe you see your loved ones dead on the ground, and you know it's your fault. Maybe you see the goal you've been working so hard for pulled out of your reach forever. Maybe you see someone you've hurt in the past ruining your life. Maybe you see your hot girlfriend leaving you to shack up with your worst enemy. Whatever you see, it really sucks, and you know that it's possible. This future could happen if you make the wrong choices, give in to your worst impulses.

Break the mirror if you want, but you'll see the same vision in any reflective surface in the city. You can't break them all, but you can sure try. And what will you do when you see your best friend's vision - and it features you betraying them?

Seek reassurance, give reassurance, lash out, vow to yourself that you'll never let it turn out that way, sink into the depths of sorrow because you feel like the future you see is inevitable. Whatever you do, it won't take away those visions - not until the event is over.

That's what I thought! I mean, it's more than a job, it's a service. If we don't get to the soul before the body dies, things can get unpleasant.

[George generally dislikes gods, but she dislikes the Null even more]

Well, welcome to my brain train. We're gonna get some cool, kooky furniture and it's all gonna be great conversation pieces. We'll be like... high society douchebags. As much as you can be down here.

[She misses Delight the most. Rage, she could take or leave.]

[ In times like these, sometimes earnest enthusiasm is all a person has to bring to the table. Merle's always found that it works wonders. ]

They're gonna be soooo jealous. Just what they get for not tryin' to get a little fresh air! And what's anyone gonna do about it if they find us? Sue us?

[ What's the point of being in the chaotic alignment column if you don't do some random looting once in a while? ]

Weird. From the way everyone talks about the gods, you'd think they'd be all up in our business all the time instead of just some of the time.

[George has only met Fear thus far]

There's a sense of nostalgia that comes with the feeling of that hand in her hair. A type of calming presence she so rarely experienced throughout her lifetimes.

Bringing a hand to Maketh's forearm, Rey lifts her head to look the other woman in the eye this time.

"I'm sorry. I'll try harder, not to put you through this again." She can do better; she knows that.

Yeah. You said you've been here, what, two months? Sounds like Kyna and I have a leg up on this shit, though. This is far from the first time we've been kidnapped to another dimension.

[That's helped to mitigate the shock, at least. Being stuck here still fucking blows, but at least he's not also trying to wrap his head around the existence of magic and multiple planes. This isn't any weirder than the other shit he's had to deal with in the past few months.]

Fucking lame. The fact that you can get hurt at all once you're dead is some serious shit. [...Though, actually, that raises some other questions.] So what's the difference between being a Reaper and being alive? You said you can't contact your family, but besides that. Are there drawbacks?

[They pissed Taako off personally. Noted! He has a feeling there's no point in pressing on that in particular right now though, so... He frowns.]

I'm not saying you're wrong. I've only been here a couple weeks. I'm still trying to get a read on the situation.

Special agent. [That... is awesome???] Interesting stuff. So does your job end with hunting down the bad guys or do you work with them at all after you've caught 'em?

[Lance was already someone that Harlan wanted to get to know better, but after dropping that little tidbit, he's skyrocketed to the top of the intrigue list.

As for the rest, he shrugs.]

Not as important as the professionals, but freelance suits me better, even if it's shady. [Which, it super is. There's no vetting process at all, and no training. He's pretty lucky to be alive, all things considered.] I'm not cut out for the bureaucracy.

[Harlan nods. He's met a couple non-humans already, and has seen a few others roaming around.] Sounds like some of us are from similar places even if they're not exactly the same. Like, uh, Taako? [Stupidest name on the planet, but that's what the guy said he was called, so...] We have similar magic, but he's never heard of a subway.

You'd know 'em if you heard 'em. [Probably? He hopes, anyway. Depriving a kid of such a rad band is basically child abuse.]

Uh. No, just reorganizing shit. It helps keep my mind off of stuff. [He laughs a little. He wishes he was up to something more interesting. Cleaning is probably the last thing Duck wants to do.] The books here do suck, though. Most of them aren't even legible. What are you doing here?

[Harlan laughs a little. His own childhood memories are decidedly Not Great in comparison, but he's not going to bring that up. Delmar's asking more important questions, anyway.]

We've got plenty of music. There's still a lot of love for the music from your time, too. Like, the Beatles are still popular. [They're not really his taste, but respect where it's due.]

We have shit similar to typewriters. Computers. They're like bigger versions of these phones but they have a keyboard like a typewriter. You can access the internet with them, or play games or whatever. Talk to people. Listen to music on them, actually. My phone from home has all my music on it.

[He shrugs.] I guess the main difference between your time and mine is that we can do all the same shit, but it's streamlined. I don't need a radio to listen to music and a typewriter to write stuff and a TV to watch TV. I can do it all from my phone, or like a computer or whatever.

[He grins a little at that. He knows it's not a joke - he saw Nate's posts on the network, is well aware that he really does go swimming in the lake. He just thinks it's so monumentally foolish to do something like that that he can't help but smile.]

You have a point. Maybe just better to smash them.

[Bad luck and all. Adam would take the bad luck over the possibility of running into his mirror again someday down the road and seeing that unpleasant future all over again. Even if he knows it won't happen, even if he's sure he'll avoid it - he doesn't want to see it.

He doesn't doubt that Lance feels the same. Even if Lance knew his own fate already, seeing it has to be different. Has to be difficult. For all that Adam has known more than one person who knew their death was coming, he still can't imagine the weight that would be.]

I won't tell anyone.

[Not that it necessarily matters - there's no one he would tell, except Ronan, and Ronan wouldn't care except inasmuch as it's something that might make Adam sad. But still, he feels like he should say it. Even if all the people who matter know already, even if he's pretty sure Lance knows he wouldn't share someone else's secrets - he feels like he has to say it.]

I've heard people wonder if there's a way to stay here. Is that... something you want?

[Mettaton's fingers tighten around Alphys' slightly, as if he can will her sadness away. But he knows he's not that kind of strong anymore. The strength he has cannot help anyone, unless they wanted to be hurt or see others getting hurt.

Still...he cares enough to try.]

If there are those who enjoy this, then I severely question their mental state. I've seen more than I wish to have seen already. These images are unwanted and unnecessary to be subjected to.

You...do not deserve this, Alphys dear.

[Neither does he, but that's not important.]

Stay here with me, won't you?

[Stay so he can make sure that you don't get hurt or stolen away. The image of a collared, cowering lizard monster beset upon by her "best friend" just won't leave his mind...]

Oscar thinks of Kate Walker. He has always been the hard-headed one of the two of them.

"Humans are capable of understanding their potential. They further it by developing new ideas and work toward their successful execution so that the end result can benefit their peers. I believe that our captors can learn from them."

Maketh tries to smile, running her hand through Rey's hair again. "You--are very important. You cannot forget that. Promise me?"

She moves to take Maketh's hand, fingers curling into her palm.

"Promise."

It's the least she can do.

It's not? Seriously? What kind of world do you come from?

[George has no such luxury. she's having to cope with multiple Earths, none of which seem to have Reapers. that by itself is enough to weird her out because how does death work in those worlds?]

The difference? We don't age, that's one thing. We don't look the same to the living as we did when we died. That's another thing and it sucks. And as far as drawbacks go, we don't get paid for what we do, so I had to get a day job to afford rent, food, stuff like that.

The relief is so sudden it hurts. Maketh lets out a shuddering breath, squeezing Rey's hand. "Good. That--that is very good."

This part is done. They survived it.

"Will you come home with me?"

And you don't get a choice in it, right? You didn't sign up for that. It's pretty unfair that you have to do even more work on top of it.

[As someone who's always worked his ass off, he's offended on her behalf.]

At least you get a break here.
