Intro Log: Faceplanted

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for October
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: October 10th-14th
Warnings: Newbies, spookies, and evil trees!

If it's your first time here, congratulations! You get the lovely, unique sensation of eating dirt as the Door knocks you facefirst into the ground. You'll probably be a little woozy at first, so take your time getting up- meet some folks, introduce yourself, don't be weird about it. Welcome to Hadriel! You're not the only person who just got to taste alien dirt firsthand, though- there are several people in the same predicament as you, so feel free to say hi! Probably shouldn't spend too much time talking though, because the lovely trees that you thought were just scenery are starting to creep ever closer the more you let your guard down.

All around you is a forest of spooky evil trees- it seems to be just a normal sort of forest at first, but the more you take your eyes off of them, the more they shift around you and close in. Or is that just your imagination? If you move too close to one, look out! They're rather determined to pick you up and stick you into the ground so you might take root- and if you resist, well, a severed bud can still serve as a seed, right?

If the trees tear your clothes though, don't worry, there's plenty of extras to be found lying around the arena if you don't mind them being a bit dirty. Lying on the ground and sometimes hanging off of these tree branches are some free shirts, yours for the taking! You know, if you'd be caught dead with one...

But hey, after you've met new friends and found a new aesthetic, feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers October 10th-14th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

"Pleasure to meet you, Maketh." Fennel flashes her his best "I am a charming yet harmless doofus" smile. Some people take it well and some do not. "As much it can be, I think? I know the facts but I still feel pretty lost, which isn't too abnormal for me." Fennel waves his hands to indicate vaguely the entire situation of gods, a glowing cave, monsters, and everything else packed into Hadriel.

Back up. Guardswoman. "....I'm not loitering, am I?" Fennel hasn't exactly been considering what laws there are to break here.

Maketh thins her mouth. She distrusts good humor. "We don't concern ourselves with such things. So long as you don't bring harm to the people here, you may do as you please."

It's a simple rule, she thinks.

"That's good to know. It's hard to tell sometimes when people will be offended by." Fenn's not precisely comforted by that. It could be this place has a lot bigger troubles than people loitering. He associates a lack of formal laws with weak society. Something easy to break down with the right stressors.

In any case, he seems to have caused some kind of offense or broken some rule. Part of him thinks--well, knows that he should make some overture to join whatever ruling structure there is. He has training, useful skills, and would likely get some comfort in being involved in a structured environment again. He finds he has no intention of doing so.

"Don't worry, I don't have any intentions of doing anything like that." But he does wonder how they enforce things here. "Does that happen often? People trying to hurt other people, I mean."

What a curious question. Maketh shrugs, deceptively casual. "From time to time. We deal with it as we must."

This sounds like some kind of bullshit non-answer, and it makes Fenn more than a little nervous. "Are we talking about from time to time there's some light assault and burglary, or from time to time we have an issue with serial killers? It seems like a random influx of strangers from different worlds with who knows what kind of powers could make things a little dangerous from time to time." The smile had completely left Fenn's face, and it comes back a little less cheery.

"I don't mean to sound paranoid or doubtful that you all keep the peace around here, but..." Fenn motions around him. "I'm just trying to get an idea for how things are here."

"We had a serial killer," Maketh says softly. "Like you said. No knowing how people will react with a situation like this."

Too many of them are threats that she lacks the proper tools to fully shut down.

She watches him for a moment.

"You seem intelligent. For the most part, people keep the peace. The Guardsmen do what we can, but our authority is--limited, you might say. We maintain the perimeter around the city. We break up fights. And on occasion we enforce punishment for transgressions. It is not an opportune system. But we are not in a position to demand obedience or respect. That would do the enemy's work for them."

Fenn's seen enough places break down to not be surprised, and even in a well regulated and governed place, you can always find horrible people doing horrible things. Without consequences, it's just simpler to make the choice to do horrible things.

This is probably the first time in his life someone has looked at Fenn and said he looked intelligent. He has to chuckle. "So you're more vigilantes than structured government." But this was a job someone needed to at least try to do. It was a good sign that they were trying to do this, probably.

"Who's the enemy here?"

"If you like. I would not use the term myself." Maketh shrugs. She has other concerns than what the city thinks of her, so long as she doesn't become a liability. "We have far too much paperwork. And we faec threats on multiple fronts. I would think that obvious by now. The Null, the things in the caves. The gods."
