What: The event log for the Dust to Dust event
Where: All over the city!
When: January 14th-17th
Warnings: A big ol' mess.

It starts off small: the wind picks up, particles of sand and dirt and dust begin to fill the air. You might not even notice at first, not until you have to wipe the dust off your windows to see outside. After all, it's been a long time since Hadriel has experienced weather, and it's never experienced a weather event not caused by the gods before.

But the gods aren't in charge of the weather now, and even if they could prevent this dust storm, they have way too many other things to do. So it's up to you to deal with it, and as the wind rises and the dust storm moves into the city, there'll be plenty to deal with.

Once the storm is at its peak, it'll be almost impossible to see outside - and it won't be safe to go wandering, either. Entirely besides falling and hurting yourself, if you aren't wrapped up well enough the particles in the air will abrade your skin. Love that sandpaper feel! Oh, and breathing? Yeah, better make sure your nose and mouth are covered, or else they'll be full of sand, too. Hope you've got some goggles stashed away to protect your eyes. Luckily, it won't last too long - 'cause you'll have plenty of cleaning to do once the storm is over.

[Aren smiles, then reaches for her drink when it's served and raises it.]

At least being trapped here by shitty weather is actually a better time than...all that dream shit. We don't have to do a damn thing but drink some more.

So that's what you are, right? A Grey Warden?

[pardon her, she's still a bit flustered from the compliment and is now fiddling with her drink rather than drinking it]

Yeah. I just hope they're cool with us crashing here if the weather doesn't let up.

They'd have to be real dicks to throw us out in this, but I don't think Rey'd want to do that. As long as no one's tearing shit up or not paying for drinks, we're probably okay.

[Barkspawn yawns and stretches out on the floor.]

Besides, they'd be kicking out two of their best bouncers. Barkspawn totally counts.

Yeah, I'm so not going to be tearing shit up. I wouldn't even know how. I mean, everything looks pretty sturdy.

[has now noticed Barkspawn]

...holy crap. That is a dog.

[The dog lifts his head and barks, wagging his tail.]

Yep, he sure is! Barkspawn's a mabari, the best and smartest dog in Thedas. They're bred for war, but they're also social. He's just a big cuddlebug outside battle.

[she offers her hand for Barkspawn to sniff]

I've never seen such a big dog before. Are they all so big? I mean, I guess they'd have to be if they're war dogs, but wow.

Mabari? Yeah, he's a pretty normal size.

[Barkspawn gets up to sniff the hand, then licks it.]

I could probably ride him if I really wanted to, but he's more effective when he can tear across the battlefield without anything on is back.

Damn. He's probably taller than I am.

[tentatively pets his head.

she laughs] Yeah, I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to be tackled by 'im. I'd imagine the results wouldn't be pretty.

[Barkspawn pants happily, leaning into that hand and nuzzling it.]

Nope, it really isn't. He's as badass as any of my order, he doesn't need to be on two legs to prove that. We rescued each other; first I cured him of this taint killing him, then he found me and evened the odds when these darkspawn found me and my friends. I can always trust him to have my back.

[she pets him with a little more confidence]

The taint. . . that's what was getting to you in the dream?

[Aren smiles as her boy gets all the attention he deserves, though mention of the taint has that fading quick.]

Yep. That cure's just for dogs, it doesn't work on two-legs like me. If you get tainted, you either die or become a ghoul or join the Grey Wardens. And the last one's a stop-gap measure. It only delays it for about thirty years or so.

So, no matter what, it kills you in the end. That sucks.

Pretty much, yeah. But if I'm being totally honest here, it's still more time than I'd have gotten before I was recruited. Duncan needed me, but he also did me a favor.

Yeah? How so?

[She shrugs.] Oh, I was going to be executed for impersonating a noble in a fight. I won, but that doesn't matter for shit when you're low-born. I embarrassed them all and they knew it and were going to kill me for it, but Duncan stepped in. So, I traded one sentence for another, more or less.

...wow. That's a fuckton of bullshit. You won the fight, didn't that mean anything to those assholes? Anything like "hey, this person's capable, maybe we shouldn't fuck her over?"

Nope, it didn't mean a damn thing. The Proving's only for nobles and warriors, not 'gutter trash' like me. But the joke's on them, now I'm a Paragon with my own noble House. I bet that really pisses off the hardliners, heh.

That's fucked up. But good on you for getting the better of 'em in the end.

Thanks. So, what should I order to ride out the dust storm? I'm not sure what I'm in the mood for, so help me decide.

[She glances to the window again, shaking her head. Visibility is down to nothing now.]

I'd order whiskey. You can never go wrong with whiskey. Maybe a whiskey sour if you like mixed drinks.

I won't know if I don't try them, right? One whiskey sour, then!

I'll have one, too. Might as well, since it doesn't look like we're getting out any time soon.
