Good morning, new Hadrielites. How are you feeling? A little weird about waking up on a strange world under two suns? Yeah, we figured. You're not the only ones - just ask all the folks who woke up with you, or the folks who have been here for months. Or you could ask the monsters.
Yup, arriving with the newcomers are a number of nurses, - but not the nice ones that will patch up your wounds and bring you sweet painkillers. No, these are hunchbacked and infested or disturbingly sexy, and none of them are helpful at all. They are attracted to light and noise, and they conveniently carry melee weapons with them. All the better to beat you with! While you can kill them, they can take a lot of damage, so think twice before running in with fists swinging.
Don't worry, the nurses aren't the only thing that came in with you. Life in Hadriel can be pretty hectic, so why don't you make sure you have something to protect that phone of yours? Scattered around the arena, you can find a number of different and artistic phone cases. So grab one that appeals to you and show off your sense of style!
Once you've escaped the nurses and picked up some phone protection, you're ready for the wider world of Hadriel. Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers February 10th-16th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
Exploring
[Things are different in Hadriel. It's a mantra Ephemera repeats to himself at night, or whenever he starts getting twitchy with remembering. His family is gone and his revenge is either too complicated or far too simple. Either way he has people here and he can't afford to put them in danger. So he's made his peace with Washington, with everything, and certainly it's a tedious, uneasy peace - but it holds.
By necessity, it holds.
And then there's Carolina, the bitch in blue, glaring down at the place like it owes her something.
Breathe, motherfucker.
Ephemera yanks his helmet off with a curse, good eye narrowed tight. If his helmet is off he's not fighting and he won't start something. Right? Right?]
You're shit outta luck, Freelancer.
[He's not shooting at her. He's not happy about that.]
no subject
It's enough to still her, to put her on edge, not understanding how she is hearing it. His death is never something that Carolina had wanted, and she had been truthful in both her apology and in her desire to not continue the fight. It hadn't mattered. He'd kept coming, until he hadn't.
A hallucination? Has she really pushed herself that far and done a Washington?
It isn't until his helmet comes off that the tension in her own posture loosens. It doesn't dissipate, but she has no reason to attack him. Didn't before, even though she understood what he had felt.]
How are you here?
[He's dead.
She's not...]
no subject
Breathe.]
You're born unlucky.
[He bares his teeth.]
Me too. Otherwise you'd be dead.
no subject
There is a moment, before her hands rise, and she's uncoupling her own helmet, dragging it free. Arguably, she's been in it too long again, but it has always been a second skin for her. Their 'retirement' had taken some getting used to, including the fact that she didn't always need to wear her armour, but she's an old dog and doesn't learn tricks all that easily anymore.]
I know.
[Old. Burdened. Tired. There is loss etched on her face- too many friends gone, and too long to realize that fact.]
You're- ... alive?
no subject
Stop. Breath.
He's never seen her with the helmet off. Not in person, at least. There were records. Way more than Locus and their crew should have been able to get their hands on, and yet. Might've been some in there, he doesn't remember. They weren't important. Not when it came to his mission, what he'd needed to do. Put her down, put the others down, make them pay.
Breathe.
Her hair is shockingly red, Ephemera thinks.
He shivers. Bares his teeth.]
Disappointed? I do that to people.
no subject
She doesn't relax, but she also doesn't take an offensive position either. Rather, she remains in that defensive one. No matter what scenarios she runs in her head, they don't make sense, and she can almost laugh at that. When does it ever make sense? Nothing is ever as it seems.]
Surprised.
[Which is more along the lines of the truth. How many times will it come back to bite her in the ass? Possibly until the day that she dies, which realistically, won't be to a ripe old age. In many ways, she's already a dinosaur, lasting longer than so many other Freelancers. A relic, trying to adapt to a different way of life, taking lessons on how to be in retirement, but there's never going to be a true retirement. Even now, they've saved the planet.]
Perturbed. But you likely do that to people too.
no subject
I've got no reason to make this easy on you, Carolina. None at all.
no subject
He wouldn't, likely. Carolina had been lucky, had found those who had called her on her shit, and had become family in the process.]
I don't expect you to. I'd actually question it if you did.
[It had taken her time, and it is still a process.]
But I've still no desire to fight you.
no subject
They were my family. The people you killed. I want you to fucking know that.
[He shivers. Stares at her.]
They were all I ever had.
no subject
I do. Every single day.
[She doesn't try to justify her actions because there is no justifying them. She doesn't deny it. She doesn't blame someone else.
Hindsight is twenty twenty, and what she had thought then isn't what she thinks now. They had all been used in their own ways, but there is no passing the buck. She hadn't stopped to question, had just followed orders and pushed harder to be the best.]
There's nothing I can do or say that will ever be enough, that will bring them back.
no subject
Stop. Breathe.]
And I can't kill you. Because you'd come back.
[He laughs, good eye wide.]
Oh, yeah. They do that here. Nothing stays dead. Except the ones who matter.
no subject
They'd been in the right, doing the right thing - yet it had all been a lie. A falsehood. They hadn't been the good guys. Just the opposite.
Nothing Freelancer did was reasonable, even in itself. KIA. MIA. Wash is the only one left from those days that Carolina knows about. The rest are gone, forgotten by the world, but not by her.]
It's the innocents that pay for our sins.
[Because she'd give her life, if it meant undoing what she's done. Life doesn't work like that. There aren't reboots. If you're lucky, you might get a second chance, and you might kick that second chance in the face anyway.]
no subject
[Ephemera just stares at her. Of all the people who could get thrown in here, Carolina's one of the few who edge it closer to a personal hell.]
Get out of my face. Be better for everybody if I never see you again.
no subject
No, but I know what I've done.
[It's what keeps her up at night, brings on those nightmares. He's just a living breathing reminder of that, of all the things she has failed at. Yet, there might be a wariness there, a hint of surprise. It's not like she doesn't expect him to do something. He'd more or less said he would never stop.
Her hands do rise, putting her helmet back on, shifting it to lock in place.]
That ball's in your court.
no subject
[Now they both have to live with it. He's kept his anger for years and now, now it has nowhere to go. He shivers. Grabs his helmet tight and puts it back on, mirroring her without thinking about what it might mean.]
...really? Really? That's what you're going with.
[Ephemera shivers. Takes a step back so he won't start something worse.]
Go fuck yourself, Carolina.
no subject
No matter I say, it's not going to change anything. You've made that clear.
[She'd keep apologizing, if she thought it would do anything, but Carolina knows that it isn't. She's working to make amends, to use each day that she has left to make a difference. It isn't a stain she can get rid of, but instead of being a killing machine, she can try to be better than that, to do better.]
Noted, loud and clear, Sharkface.
no subject
[He's shaking with the need - the fucking need - to knock her back down.]
Oh, and Carolina? Call me that again and I'll show you why I earned it.
no subject
Believe what you want to believe, because nothing I can say will open your eyes or change your mind. Telling you that revenge isn't going to fill that hole, that it's just going to keep growing the more that you shove in to it until you are drowning in it. Be consumed, because at the end of the day, you're going to realize that you don't feel any better.
[It's not like she wants to call him anything, but given that he hasn't exactly told her what to call him. Hey you, perhaps? Somehow she doubts his name coming from her lips is going to please him.
But, she is getting more than a little annoyed. This is a waste of time. He needs to figure out what the hell he wants, and she'd react from there.]
I've seen your moves. Not interested in seeing them again.
no subject
[They're going in furious circles and it hasn't gotten them anything, either of them. Ephemera wishes she'd just keel over and die. Make his life simple for once.
Focus. Remember what you have. Remember what happens if you lose it in front of her.
Ephemera shivers. He's starting to feel twitchy and uneasy, on the edge of manic. Thoughts coming too fast and he's just standing there.
No. Remember what you have to do. Protect your people.
Abruptly, he grabs his phone and fires off a short message, typing names out hatefully quick. He doesn't want to link up with her comm, doesn't want anything to do with her at all. But it needs to be said, and it doesn't take him long at all to send the message to Carolina's phone. Everyone has one here and everyone is on the network.
What her sends her is a list of names. Kyna Midha. Drake Holloway. Lance Sweets. Lup Taaco.]
You stay away from me. I don't wanna hear your voice anymore. And those people?
[He shivers.]
You so much as breathe in their direction, I burn your world down.
no subject
She has no interest in going around just killing people. That had never been her game. While she knows that in the end there had been those targeted that has she stopped to think about it shouldn't have been, purposefully hurting innocents isn't what she is about.]
Let me put it as simple as it can be. I've no interest in you. I've no interest in your people.
[So unless he targets someone she cares about, she's just going to keep on ignoring that for whatever screwed up reason, he's here and he's alive.
And maybe it is waving a red flag in front of a bull, but she's turning away from him. Not that she's letting her guard down, as she doesn't trust him, at all. There is that fire in him, that hatred, that urge to burn her world down.]
no subject
Disengage. Don't set anything on fire.
Yeah. Have some fucking self-control, for once.
He grits his teeth and walks away.]
