You do this regularly? [weirdo] I feel like after this spicy tuna is going to taste like nothing.

You're right, though. I did ask for it.

[ Serah please she doesn't need a party to be a garbage bag. ]

Better. Weird architecture, but better. The new houses are cute.

[ She knows because she goes to the hot springs a lot. ]

It's practical and effective. You don't need to try to bring morality into it. I've heard gnolls eat like that sometimes, they're intelligent mortals. Well - no less intelligent than most of you, I mean.

[No she genuinely doesn't see the problem, just thinks it's funny that others get so squeamish about it. It's not something she cares to do often since it's rare something is small enough for it to count as 'practical and effective' for her, but clearly the soul larvae are an example.]

[A feast like this does very little to someone like Edgar who doesn't enjoy, uh, 'usual' kind of food and nourishment. The delicious smells from the food reaches to his sensitive nose but fails to rouse up any kind of appetite out of him. He's nibbled food from here and there whenever he felt pair of eyes watching him, tasting nothing. Of course, the gods had seemed to think of him while making the arrangements for the feast by preparing a bowl filled with blood on one of the tables -- which, Edgar had left untouched out of discretion.

But the reason why he had came to the party altogether was the company. His need to be around others was too great to ignore and who knows, maybe he'll be able to find more people -- beings -- like him or other useful contacts. He's walking between tables, looking more at the people rather than the food on the present when he's all suddenly addressed.

Ah. Pizza and other 'junk food.']

I'm afraid that you wouldn't enjoy the food I was given here.

I don't see you weaving a much better tapestry, pal.

[Seems like that might actually be cheating? WHO'S THE THIEF NOW, ELENA?]

I don't see it.

[Nate shrugs with both his shoulders and his eyebrows, one arm tightening around her waist as they reach the edge of the surging party-goers. Easier to hear her, this way, and have her hear him in return.

It also offers him the barest modicum of privacy when Nate dips his head to the side, nosing at a delicate ear. His grin touches Elena's cheek just enough to be mischievous when he murmurs,
]

Nope. None. No dignity here.

He's spent more than his fair share of time on ships of all sizes, from dinghies in the Caribbean to pirate-commandeered cruise liners off the coast of Yemen, so her mental image - discounting the shirtless part - isn't altogether inaccurate. People, Nate believes, love an adventure story, and he milks her renewed interest for all it is worth. Hard not to be enthused by a tale of historical conspiracy and lost treasures.

"That's what I was thinking!"

He interjects eagerly, distractedly reaching for the bottle of cachaça and pouring some into his coffee mug. It mixes with the dregs and he takes another sip, leaning back against the table.

"There are plenty of other pirates who have disappeared, or escaped hanging. The thing is, we- we didn't get to follow the lead, because then we ended up here." Nate's frustration is abundantly apparent, because King's Bay had been within their reach. "But I've spent all this time in Hadriel racking my brain over the reason why they would pool their money like that, if they weren't trying to build some kind of settlement."

[He's endured worse than your stilettos, Taako.]

Sugarcane alcohol, from the country where I spent...most of my time, growing up. [Woof, that's not a story he needs to go into right now, least of all with this guy.] It'll fuck you up.

[Luckily for both of them, the table nearby has an excess of cups. Nate pours a healthy serving and holds it out.]

( Oh c'mon Ignis what is life in Hadriel if you don't make terrible jokes about your shitty position once in a while. And she sees the twitching of the corner of his mouth, enough to gently elbow him in the ribs instead of saying anything, a shrug rolling off her shoulders casually.

Hey, at least you had gods back home. She just thought the big man in the sky was bullshit started by people scared they couldn't explain anything.

Me neither. Too many people in one place, if you ask me. [he shrugs his shoulders.] Although I guess the people watchin' gets fun in situations like that.

[which he continues to do as people pass by.] What d'you mean, coulda been worse?

[personal profile] abyssalarcana 2018-05-07 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well," she starts, then pauses. Her brain feels a little more muddled than she had expected and it takes her a moment to formulate a thought. There are other reasons to pool money - to buy out politicians, to use it as a magical catalyst in certain spells if the gold is pure, or possibly to pay off an even larger threat. But. Isn't Nate from ... From one of those awful worlds where the mortals haven't discovered magic?

No, wait, that sounds amazing, it would leave them powerless. What a good world. What a good, good world.

Caedra takes a long drink, then smiles lazily as she approaches Nate and reaches for one of his arms. "I have a few ideas. About pirates but more importantly about you. Ideas that really ought to be shared privately. Will you come with me?"

Fuck it, he's hot, and she wants him. The cachaça brought her some clarity.

Oh, okay.

[Another person with weird dietary restrictions, he presumes; not too unusual here, and so he doesn't think too much of it. More interestingly, Edgar is unfamiliar and so--]

Are you a recent arrival? I don't think we've met.

[ Ugh, what a terrible deal!!!! -dies laughing- ]

And how about. . . oh I don't know, some kind of a concert house? A big venue that can hold a lot of people and host a lot of music? And can be easily lit or decorated? Not that I don't enjoy the Speakeasy, but something bigger and wilder?

[ But he'd definitely go for restaurants. Scrounging Hadriel every day for edibles is time-consuming and shall we say not always rewarding? Not to mention hunting for edible monsters and trying to cook them so they don't taste like what they are. ]

Maybe that's why Curufin sometimes wonders if Kelson is entirely mortal? -- maybe because Kelson's being carries echoes of those fey ancestors.

"The gods used to live at peace with their former hosts and with the Null. But the Null became frightened and hostile when they realized that the gods could cause them to feel emotions. The Null used to be organic beings for whom emotions were normal, but they came to despise and fear their own vulnerability, and so they modified themselves, made themselves entirely or almost entirely synthetic. I guess this happened before they ever met the god-race. And for a while afterwards, they got along with the gods and had productive trade and cultural relations, but then they suddenly attacked, with great and lethal force. The gods were taken entirely by surprise, and the Null killed all of them except for the eight that we know. The Null also killed all of the gods' hosts."

And on to the other topic:

"I can tell you the theory behind what we do. Or at least, I can relate what the sages have told us. Some of it I know from experience, and some I can't vouch for, because I wasn't there when it happened. Our powers depend on our nature. Our creator god, Eru, first made the angelic powers, the Valar. They are pure spirit, but they can take on material forms if they wish, whatever they wish. They are not bound to these forms, and if the form is somehow destroyed, they simply revert to being powerful spirits. Eru also made a race of helper spirits, the Maiar, to be the servants of the Valar and assist them in their labors. They have the same nature as the Valar, they just aren't as powerful. And then Eru made us, the Elves. We are really made on the same plan, though we are much less powerful than the Maiar."

"We basically are spirits who have a physical nature, except that we are born with our bodies as they are, and most of us aren't shape-changers. But the body is regarded as merely one aspect of the immortal spirit. If it is destroyed, then the spirit goes to the Halls of Mandos, and from there it may return to the world, taking on a new form or one identical to the old one. And there is another possibility for the end of life. We sometimes do this thing we call fading, in which the spirit slowly consumes the physical form, until there is only an invisible spirit left. It is usually an involuntary process, caused by extreme grief or weariness of the world. But its been known to happen speedily. When my father was dying, he incinerated his body. He just exploded into a cloud of smoking ash, and his spirit fled to Mandos."

"All of this is background for understanding our nature. With us, the relationship between spirit and body is more versatile than is the case for the mortals of our world. We never are completely identified with the body, since we know it is temporary, even though we may live for thousands of years. We experience ourselves as physically manifested spirits. And because of that relationship, we have more control over our physical being than mortals generally do. That is why we have our powers -- great physical and emotional strength, and the more subtle powers such as mindspeech. It is fairly easy to direct the body to respond to the wishes of the spirit."

When Kelson reaches out to touch Curufin's hand, the Elf hears his message instantly. He smiles and answers silently. I as well have found that physical contact helps. I cannot speak mind to mind with everyone, and I don't do it all the time even with my family. I am not the most talented of mind-speakers; for me, it often depends on mood. But I can hear you loud and clear!

And he will see no fear in Curufin's eyes. This feels natural to the Elf.

Yeah, a little bit. [She shrugs again. In all honesty, finding the brushes had been harder than finding the paint.]

I want to paint the walls in my room, too. Something I did back home... but I'd need a lot more for that. And not, y'know, watercolours.

... Wow, you really don't know how to play anything other than chess, huh.

[Maybe he does? It's not the impression she's getting.]

Checkers is like... chess for dummies, I guess. Eight by eight checkered board, twelve pieces each. You start off on the dark squares, so it's three rows, like... [She mimes the positioning of the checkers on the table.] You move diagonally forwards, and jump over a piece to capture it. If you get a piece to the other side of the board, you get to king it, then it can move backwards as well.

No. I prefer Julie Cabernet.

[Grigio is her father's name, and using the surname Cabernet has been her little way of rebelling against him for some time now. He hates to hear other people call her by it, so she encourages its use.]

One day I'll change it officially, but there's not much call for notaries where I'm from.

[Nil doesn't argue, but considers what she says and then shrugs.] Fairly put. I've no quarrel with the dead, as long as they don't pose the same problems they did while they were alive.

[And as far as he knows, no dead person has ever risen in the Sacred Lands or Sundom to terrorise the local populace. Then, it would become his problem, and only if there were some sport in it.]

Are you some kind of priest?

[Perhaps it's a good thing that he would have to get up far earlier to be able to intimidate Ignis. The young man lets out a soft, patient sigh.]

You said yourself that you weren't one to be counted wise, but don't insult me by feigning ignorance.
