"I'm not sure. Probably. I just don't think they care so long as they keep getting fed." That was how gods worked, in her experience. Even if they did know better, they just didn't care enough to change.

"Even if they did listen, they probably wouldn't understand. As much as they look human--or most of them do, anyway--they never have been."

"So they're like children. Children are capable of learning." Kelson was stubborn. He wasn't likely to give this up, at least until he tried and failed.

"They might learn faster if we made it unpleasant for them." He wasn't entirely sure how but royal pages sure learned faster when his uncle Nigel threatened them with extra work and the like. Added incentive helped.

"Pretty much." That pretty much explained all of their actions. "Children are. Gods really aren't. They don't change because some tiny mortal told them they're not being nice. That's a good way to get yourself smited." Or worse. Listening to terrible haikus or talking in rhyming couplets for a week.

"How do you know they're divine and not beings with more power than you or I might have?" Yeah, sorry Annabeth, Kelson really wasn't ready to accept that there might be more than one god and that he'd been kidnapped by some of them.

"I don't intend to get smited. I intend to ask nicely." He might not be used to talking to 'gods' but he was used to talking to kings and archbishops and other people who considered themselves powerful and not to be trifled with.

"Who said anything about divine? They have more power than us, they can call themselves what they want and we really aren't in a position to argue." She's just going to make sure she's several feet away from him in case the lightning struck.

"Your idea of asking nicely is probably not the same as theirs. Or else they might just decide it's hilarious you're even tying and smite you anyway for the fun." That's a thing that happens.

Kelson was really confused now. "How can they be gods if they are not divine?" He had no idea about being smote by lightning and it was probably too much to hope for Saint Camber's miraculous intervention. He was far beyond his reach now, wasn't he?

"Diplomatic overtures are never without risk. One kingdoms ideas of asking nicely is never the same as another's. As long as no one dies that's at least a partial success. Although, I'd say in some cases even death gets things moving." He just hoped it wasn't his.

"I'm not going to get into the philosophy. Just go with 'they're bigger than us so they get run of the playground' for now." That was a far less complicated way of thinking about it if nothing else. And really a dinner party was not the best time to be talking about whether or not God existed.

"I guess they do listen as long as you're polite and I haven't heard about any smitings lately so you might be okay. They'll probably ask for something in return for helping, though."

That was something Kelson could agree upon, nodding his consent. He wasn't sure what a playground was but he got the point. He wasn't crazy about the idea though, and it was just still weird to not be the one in charge. He was used to his powers and rank setting him apart, but there were bigger fish now.

"I've heard about that. I honestly am not sure how I feel about it. Asking for something in return is good and well I suppose. " That at least was a change of heart, if not a mild one.

"I mean, I guess it's fair to ask for payment, I'm just not sure what kind of payment they're looking for or if it's an even trade." She was pretty sure it wasn't an even trade regardless of whether or not it seemed that way. These gods were using them (that sounded familiar) and they needed something from the people they'd stuck here. Sure they might make it look like they cared, but she couldn't believe that they really did, beyond the potential of losing their food source.

" I guess there's only one way to find out. I'll have to ask and see."

He still wasn't crazy about the idea, but there was really only one way to find out and get to know these creatures and what they wanted and were all about. And that was to talk with them.

"What do you know about Hope and Fear? Is there one you would trust more than the other? Or is one more knowledgeable?"

[personal profile] yearrounder 2018-04-19 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have talked to either of them extensively, but I camped outside Hope's place for a while back when we first heard there might be an attack on him. He was really polite about it, actually. But who you go to sort of depends on what you're asking for. It's not really that one is more knowledgeable than anyone else, they just focus on different things. Like you wouldn't go to Love if you needed a weapon or you wouldn't go to Rage for flowers. But if you just mea want general information, I think Hope has been adding the longest and from what I can tell he kind of leads the rest of them." Talk about an info dump.

"Sorry. That was kind of a lot at once."
kingforboth: (not in my court)

[personal profile] kingforboth 2018-04-19 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't apologize. That is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Do you know anything about their individual behaviors? I presume Hope would be friendlier for instance, but perhaps there are areas where Fear shines as well."

Kelson mulled over this in his mind, he wasn't sure he wanted anything particular, besides gaining information on why certain things were chosen, such as housing design, gaining more knowledge regarding how they thought and acted, hierarchy and decision making.

"Hope seems like he might actually care a little bit about us, at least, if that's what you mean. Some of the others seem like they could take it or leave it." After feeding on as much of their emotions that they could get, of course.

"I'm not honestly sure what kinds of deals Fear would make and I can't think of any circumstances I'd approach him under, but I'm sure there must be something. At least it looks like they've always followed through on their deals."
kingforboth: (heavy is the crown)

[personal profile] kingforboth 2018-04-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Have you talked to Fear before? Or just Hope?" Kelson didn't want to make any decisions without getting the right information. It seemed like Hope was the right one to go to but he wanted to be certain.

"I'm not sure I would trust their honor considering they are holding us hostage." Not that he hadn't ever done that exact same thing but that was to protect those individuals as well as himself and his kingdom. Not to feed of them. They were always well kept.

He supposed Hope could probably make that very same arguement though. Damn

"Just Hope, and really only to tell him not to panic when we hung out outside his temple for a while." So far she hadn't really had a reason to talk to any of them, although she maybe had some choice words she wanted to give to some of them. If she knew a little better how they operated, she might have actually said them out loud.

"I wouldn't trust them even they weren't holding us here, but I might be a little biased." Oh well. Not like she didn't have good reason to be. "Other people have, though, you could ask around. I'm sure they've got opinions."
