Event Log: A Hope for the Future

What: The event log for the A Hope for the Future event
Where: All over the city!
When: April 15th-April 19th

It's finally time to reap the rewards you've earned from all that hard work collecting and returning the Hope orbs! Be careful walking the streets during the small earthquakes, but feel free to admire the scenery as your beautiful city reassembles its way back into its former glory.

There are new houses where the destroyed buildings once were, and they're perfect for a single person or pair of lovebirds. In addition, you'll find that the electricity to these new houses, and all other homes and shops in the city is restored. The food is better, the monsters are gone- hey, this city might be livable again!

To cap it all off, we've got a feast waiting for you on the 19th! Come one, come all, and enjoy all of your favorite foods, drinks, and party games. It's been awhile since we've all gotten together to celebrate something good, so get your party on and toss all your troubles away!

Neither is walking out in the open, but that's my choice, I guess.

[Yeah, hi]

I hadn't seen you since the clinic.

[Okay what? She blinks in confusion, then brushes hair away from her face, it having been disturbed by her abrupt turn.]

No, you haven't, but - what do you mean, walking in the open isn't good for your health?

[Because boy you look in good health to her but your attitude is the most confusing.]

It's...a long story, never mind.

[though, the way he does occasionally scan the room even while trying to hold a conversation speaks of a hunted man]

I just wanted to see if you've recovered.

[It's actually flattering that he cared enough to check up on her. Even a demon can appreciate the usefulness of a talented healer or doctor or whatever it is he calls himself. She shrugs, but all sense of anger at his sudden appearance seems to fade - she even smiles a little.]

Yes. Thankfully it was just as temporary for me as it seems it was for everyone else. Did you ever find out more about the illness?

[She's been here long enough now to pin the blame for most things on those who aren't actually gods but insist on using that title - but she's still curious as to the exact nature of their powers.]

[he has to shake his head, it's as if admitting failure actually hurts]

At some point I also lost my head, that cut any research short. There was no point, though - I'm certain it was caused by our captors. If I hadn't been compromised I would have realized it sooner.

Ah, well. They certainly seem to find all sorts of ways to make people miserable here! Should probably just get rid of them all, really.

[She grins. She's teasing. Only because she's sure others have tried and failed and it isn't an easy thing to do though.]

Hopefully this isn't part of one of those wretched plans. What treats did they provide for you, hm?

[yeah, uh uh - he takes the joke with a deadpan. No massacres until they have a way home.]

Ah...onigiri, actually. I haven't had it made properly since I came here, the rice isn't right. You were the, uh...

[he gestures vaguely to the soul larvae, not wanting to just call them worms but good god demon girl what you got there]

[She turns to look at where he points and nods, grinning as she returns her gaze to Law]

Soul larvae! Yes, they either wanted to insult me by having them all dead, or - I guess they didn't really want the destruction of these people entirely on their hands. You should try one! They're better alive, but they're still pretty good.

[Not that she expects him to accept so she tilts her head toward the carafe which - okay there's probably not a lot of coffee left in there at this point, she's had plenty but she's also noticed people sneaking from it here and there. The love of that bitter drink sure is universal.]

Or there's coffee. What is onigiri?

Coffee...

[and for a second there's some spark of life in him - Law hasn't had proper coffee since Sorrow died and took the coffee cart with him. He looks almost incredulous that such a thing should be offered.]

...maybe I'll have a cup. [and so he does! He'll notice eventually just how many people love coffee and have to sample it all. And then be up all night.] Onigiri is rice, lightly salted, formed into a portable ball with seaweed wrapping. Usually has something inside. They gave me spicy tuna, I can't complain.

[He's right to be cautious. Caedra doesn't offer things for free, she always wants something in return - now, or later. At least this time it's something as simple as his company. He's nice to look at, now that she's not out of her mind with sudden surprise illness, and there's also nothing wrong with keeping on the good side of a healer.

The coffee is good - easily the best she's ever had. A lighter roast than some prefer, it seems to have a soft fruitiness to it without being actually sweet. Probably the sort of thing true connoisseurs would never dare to put cream in, but Caedra does what she wants or nothing at all.]

Huh. I can't say I'm familiar with anything like that. I look around here and for a lot of these foods I'm able to pick out some sort of equivalent back home. The people, too. But you're unique. What's it like, where you're from?

[Law deliberately retreats to her other side so he can put his back to a wall, the better to keep an eye on the room]

I'm a pirate captain. We live at sea, so I'm used to a lot more seafood. Easy staples that last on a ship. That sort of thing.

[a couple of sips is all he needs to become surprisingly more relaxed, capable of chatting]

You're...unique. I didn't have much time to really get a look but I know you're not human, in a different way from most of the other non-humans here.

[All the better to openly eye him because let's be honest, the booze goggles are in full effect tonight.

The pirate explanation though, that makes sense and she nods along. All the tattoos, the sort of look he has about him - seems fitting.]

Hmm, a good observation. How am I different from the others, though? Enlighten me.

[he definitely looks way more the part of a pirate than a doctor, even if both are true.

He swirls his coffee around in the cup a little]

I don't want to bore you with scientific talk. I enjoy comparative physiology, I've had my hands on wraeththu and elves here. Differences are subtle, appearances aside. Eyes and ears are boring, it's all in the way organs work and flesh and bones are nourished and animated.

[She laughs a little at that.]

It's not boring, but I admit I don't know much about all of that in detail. You're right, though, of course. I'm nothing like any of those.

[Whatever wraeththu are - because she hasn't the faintest idea.]

[yeah, neither did he until he had to treat one for addiction]

Mm. Precisely why I don't like to ramble on about it in front of people who aren't interested.

[it's not that he didn't notice those superficial traits, he sure did, but it's still pretty rude to just whip out with 'hi so I'm wondering are you the one on the elves' shit list?']

At least, even if our first visit was a little awkward, I'm available to assist should you get into any more trouble.

Well. I hope I won't have to take you up on that. But - if you do, it might help to know a little more, wouldn't it?

[Time to be forward, evidently. She steps forward toward where he's backed himself against the wall, and reaches forward to place a hand on his arm, if he doesn't run away or something.]

Come with me to somewhere quieter, more private. There's a lot I can show you.

[Law stiffens a little, as he do when people invade his personal space without his permission, but he doesn't run. He just stares her down with his usual blank demeanor. He's already turned down one booty call this week...]

Is that supposed to be some sort of innuendo?

[She grins, leans against him a little, and ugh, she can't believe she's sinking to this level, mortals, really Caedra but this place gives her too few options and - they're not so bad. They look nice, some of them. It's just depressing when she knows she could do so much better. But she laughs anyway because okay, yes, the line was pretty silly, even she'll admit that.]

Yes - yes it was. Is. So come with me, hm?

[curse his atrophied libido. gorgeous people throwing themselves at him left and right...]

Maybe some other time.

[it's not a complete shut-down. His words are deliberately chosen. It's not that he doesn't want a hookup or two, just not this week. Not when he's constantly on his guard, afraid to even go to the speakeasy or a party and have a good time.]

I've got a lot on my mind right now, I wouldn't be any fun.

Mm. [Disappointing, but nothing too terrible. She pats his arm a little and lets go. She's not desperate, hardly, and there are others here who might be more accommodating to her whims.]

Some other time, then. I'll hold you to that.

Mm. I don't think I'll forget.

[someday he's going to be ready to tear off his jeans and throw all caution to the wind. Today is not that day. Law tries to cover the awkward aftermath by sinking his nose into his coffee cup]

[Caedra seems to take it in stride. She's not used to getting turned down, to be honest, but she has so little invested in any of these people that she finds it hard to care one way or another. She shrugs it off entirely and goes to pour herself the last of the coffee and stirs in a generous dollop of cream.]

Then you can do me a different favor tonight. I want to hear about being a pirate! What's your crew like?

[Back to standing across from him as she sips at her drink.]

[it's a good place to be, Caedra. Granted, he hasn't made enemies of half the population but Law does keep his investment at a minimum as well]

My crew? The Heart Pirates. There's twenty of them, about half of them are idiots and we're all lucky they're not here with me. [he loves them but...] I don't know how to describe what it's like. It's simply how I live my life.

The Heart Pirates? Cute. Very un-piratey. Where'd the name come from?

[And he's alone here, then. Worth knowing. It's odd - from what she's gathered there's such a wide mix of possibilities, with some people arriving alone and others somehow managing to have their entire circles of friends and family dragged here.

She's not sure if that would be a good thing or not, really, if someone she recognized were to join her. Most of those she knows she wouldn't necessarily be happy to be stuck here with.]

[ahahaha that question. It always sounds so simple to ask, but the answer is so complicated and painful and not something he can even think about. Particularly now, when the antithesis of his reason for the name is somewhere in this very city, possibly even across the room. Law's face drains of any color, and he reminds himself belatedly to scout the room for that giant asshole.

Who are you aiming the satire at? echoes in the back of his mind.

Sorry Caedra, that is the worst question to ask, and it's a few moments before he can dredge up some sort of lame-ass response.]

[admittedly there is also the giant heart tattooed on his chest but his button-down hides most of it. Just the top of the curve can be seen between the lapels.]
