"Ivar! Oh, look at your chair, that's wonderful!" Certainly less pathetic, though she does seem to have a soft spot for the creature who accepts her so openly. In some odd way he just reminds her of those she knows back home - the ones she likes, anyway. Nice to see him not hobbling around like a wounded animal.

"They're simrevi - um, soul larvae. When people die, their souls take this physical form. Do you want one? They're dead, so I don't think it will hurt you." The last time she saw a mortal eat one was when a rather well-off maurezhi was feeding up a new purchase before slaughter. The bound human, she recalls, started screaming and trying to tear out the spines that began to grow abruptly all over his back and sides. She'd had a good laugh at the time.

Souls! He's heard the word, from Christians. They always make such a big deal of it, but these little things hardly look worth the fuss.

Does he want one? He considers for a moment, Bjorn's wild tales about life on the sea with no tides. He'd told some that he and Halfdan had eaten a man they'd been hired to protect while they were there without realizing it until too late. A clever trick by their host that Ivar admittedly quite admires. And for all that, Ivar can hardly let himself be outdone by the big oaf, can he?

So Bjorn eats a man. Big deal, he hadn't even meant to. Ivar will eat a soul, and let any of his other brothers top that. "Why not? I will try one." He reaches for one, examining the tiny face. Very surreal. Yet it makes him feel powerful, holding onto this sad little dead thing that so many seem to think is so important. Curiously: "Are they usually not eaten dead?"

"No, of course. I'm not sure how much of that thing even can be called a soul at this point, now that it's dead. When they're alive, they carry their innate power that many of us feed off of. Also they're a lot more fun to eat when they try to bite back," she says with a laugh. "Talented cooks do things like flash-fry them so that they're hot and crispy and still screaming."

She lifts one off her plate and doesn't even seem to really regard its small size and childlike features as noteworthy or interesting, just dunks it in butter and bites it in half. "Still good though!"
