Event Log: A Hope for the Future

Who: All characters participating in the event
What: The event log for the A Hope for the Future event
Where: All over the city!
When: April 15th-April 19th
Warnings: Stealth Rock

It's finally time to reap the rewards you've earned from all that hard work collecting and returning the Hope orbs! Be careful walking the streets during the small earthquakes, but feel free to admire the scenery as your beautiful city reassembles its way back into its former glory.

There are new houses where the destroyed buildings once were, and they're perfect for a single person or pair of lovebirds. In addition, you'll find that the electricity to these new houses, and all other homes and shops in the city is restored. The food is better, the monsters are gone- hey, this city might be livable again!

To cap it all off, we've got a feast waiting for you on the 19th! Come one, come all, and enjoy all of your favorite foods, drinks, and party games. It's been awhile since we've all gotten together to celebrate something good, so get your party on and toss all your troubles away!

[And he responds with a wave.] Ah, Yusuke-kun! Well, I'm not really but it's all right. I don't eat that much anyway. [And he'll conveniently try to avoid the topic of him being ill if he can avoid it. That story will just bore Yusuke and probably cause him to get killed somehow anyway.]

Anyway, isn't it all amazing? In such a short time, the city has been restored to normal and it's all thanks to the marvellous hopes that everyone poured in together. Such a beautiful sight to see!

Hmm...? [Yusuke seems a bit concerned, but he's too polite to pry into something as personal as eating habits, so he leaves it at that for now.] Yes, it really is wonderful. One doesn't realise what one takes for granted until it is taken away. But, with Hope returning to the city, things should improve for the better.

[Barring any exceptional incident like another Null attack, but they should be prepared enough to deal with that now, at least.]

[Get four out of five hope shards and then you unlock his tragic backstory, Yusuke.]

Hopefully, they will! Mind you, it also appears that some complications seem to have arisen from all the chaos that happened these past few months. [Delight's comments - not that he trusts her-, that strange Null, Love wanting people to capture that Null, etc.]

Yes, well... I'd be more suspicious if everything had gone smoothly. But for the time being, things are finally improving for everyone in the city.

[and he's not about to look a gift horse in the mouth by fretting over the dangers, when this is at least a small triumph they've earned.]

It wouldn't have gone completely smoothly anyway. Well, not unless something absolutely tragic and terrible happened afterwards! [Because that's how things go in Komaeda's view.] So I'd say that it's a good thing that we didn't have a smooth, uneventful ride, don't you?

By that logic, perhaps you're right...?

[He looks a bit baffled, even as he's slowly getting used to Komaeda's way of thinking.]

But it must get exhausting, expecting the worst to happen all of time.

[At first, Komaeda is about to cheerfully say that it is okay and he gets good luck to make up for what happens.

However, as he thinks about it, his smile fades. Yusuke has hit the nail right on the head. It is exhausting. It is true that good things happen right after tragedy happens and Komaeda has tried to think about those good things to make up for any horrors he has seen but they are never enough to make him feel better, no matter how hard he tries. Not anymore. And, as far as Komaeda is concerned, there is only one way to stop his pointless, never-ending cycle....

Komaeda snaps out of his thoughts, realising that he has let his guard down in front of Yusuke and anxiety fills his heart. A part of him wants to answer the other boy honestly, although the other part makes him afraid of what might happen if he does. Panicking inwardly, he falls back on his nonchalant demeanour.]

Well, it's not that bad. You just have to do is wait until something good happens to balance it all out. And the fun part is that you get to speculate all the wonderful things that might happen! [Which actually isn't very fun anymore but hopefully Yusuke won't notice.]

Even so...

[Riding out highs and lows like that is exhausting, too, even with the good parts. That brief, anxious expression on Komaeda's face makes him regret opening his mouth in the first place, though.]

I'm sorry, I probably should not have said anything. But, I often find it difficult not to be concerned for your wellbeing.

[Komaeda's face fell. It looked like he did not manage to fool Yusuke. However, the second part threw him off further.] You.....do?

[As he said this, he realised that there was no way he could just brush things off and make Yusuke believe that things were not really that bad. What worried him though was what would happen if he said anything further.]

Yes. With everything you've told me so far about yourself, it's hard not to be. Because of your luck, you're always dwelling on "what if"s, both good and bad, and not what is. And while it's admirable to revere hope as a virtue, I...

[hmm, he's not sure how to express this into words. His art is often more eloquent than he is, in matters of the heart. But--]

I'm not trying to criticise you, but I'd like you to know... If things are ever difficult for you, you can confide in me as a friend.

Friend.....?

[Did he actually hear that? Yusuke....said they're friends? He isn't the first person who has said that in this place but it's still something that takes Komaeda off-guard. Friends are things that happened to other people. Anybody he's ever tried to be friends with was either driven away by his beliefs or....worse...]

Yes. I hope I'm not being too presumptuous in calling you as such.

[Komaeda doesn't seem to mind spending time with him, when most people find him strange and eccentric, and even though they don't agree on everything. Surely that's basis enough for a friendship?]

It's....not that. [Friend. Yusuke actually thinks of him as a friend. Komaeda cannot comprehend why he would want to be but to hear those words fills him with such excitement, such joy...

It is too good to be true. And if it's true, it won't last......right? Yusuke will just find him annoying. Either that or something terrible might happen.

Alternatively, there is one other possibility. Which would hurt but...]

Ah....all of that is a joke, right? It would certainly make sense. I mean, who would want to associate with me? I'd prefer that you told me straight, though. That sort of prank is pretty hurtful.

Wait-- that's not what this is about at all.

[he's a bit wounded, not to mention insulted] Do you really think so low of me, that I would carry out such a cruel prank as that? I know what it is like, to have no one to call a friend, and I would certainly not mock anyone else for it.

Uh....[Komaeda does not know what to say at first. It looks like he is wrong. Not only that but Yusuke seems to be hurt by what he said. And Komaeda cannot help but feel a pang of guilt when he sees Yusuke's reaction. He should probably explain.]

Well, it would hurt but I certainly wouldn't put you at fault for it. After all, there is a massive difference between the both of us. I don't know why people would reject someone like you and frankly such people are fools. [His voice turns stern as he says this.] Someone like you, someone who is full of shining hope, doesn't deserve that treatment. Not only is your talent amazing but you are also incredibly kind. [And before realising it, Komaeda comes out with more which he initially intended to keep hidden] You don't deserve a life where you're forever alone.

It's not like me. There's nothing good about me and my talent causes chaos everywh-

[It's then Komaeda gasps. He has revealed too much and he has not been able to stop it. Curse his disease. This is dreadful.

Fear takes a grip on him and he grabs his arms tightly to control himself. He has to end the conversation right now or he is sure that something terrible will happen. Especially since there was that girl who said they were friends as well. Too much good luck at once.

He could lie and say it was all a joke. He managed to do that with Hinata and it worked - or maybe it did. He's not sure. He looked calmer then and he's clearly not calm now so he's not sure if it would work this time. Either way, he has to get out of here now.]

......Th-that was completely out of line. Please forgive me and ignore everything I've just said.

[Yusuke is struck silent, listening to that outburst with a shocked expression. But only for a moment. That surprise soon shifts to anger, and when he speaks, it's in a quiet voice.] ... The only one you should be apologising to is yourself. "There's nothing good about me" -- how can you think such a terrible thing?

[Yusuke looks away bitterly, his hands clenching into fists.]

You're a kind and considerate person, who always thinks of others before himself. And I won't just stand here and listen to you insult someone I think of as a friend.

[Komaeda expected Yusuke to be angry with him. This, however, caught him by complete shock. Yusuke was not distancing himself from him. Komaeda was sure that the other boy might get so angry that he would leave, which would hurt but was better than a more disastrous alternative.

And yet Yusuke was angry at him for bringing himself down. And while Komaeda still believed he was wrong for saying that, it gave him massive joy for it. And yet it felt wrong.

Tightening his grip on his arms, Komaeda began to murmur quietly.]........You really think of me as a friend?
