hadriel_logs | Intro Log: Off my chest

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for April.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: April 10th-13th
Warnings: Newbies, explosions, and things that are definitely treasure chests and not evil monsters out to get you.

Welcome to your first day in Hadriel! Enjoy your surroundings, meet your fellow travelers, and be sure to start exploring so you can collect as much loot as possible!

On the ground around you may notice bang snaps, scattered haphazardly. Try not to step on any of them, or you might burn your feet! Feel free to gather them up and use these baby fireworks however you see fit; there are dozens strewn about on the ground. Popping them will emit clouds of smoke of various colors, and... well, not much else.

Is there anything else lurking around? Glad you asked! If you look around, you may find a few innocent-looking treasure chests. Which you know, normally means free loot- except, in Hadriel, nothing is quite the way it's advertised of course and the chests are actually dangerous mimics. Mimics- often disguised as treasure chests- are monsters with surprisingly quick movements and gaping maws filled with teeth. They exist to try and fool an unlucky traveler into thinking they've gotten something good... only to lunge at them in their moment of triumph and prove that life is actually terrible and nothing comes for free.

[Cole hesitates for a moment, but eventually he takes a seat in one of the chairs, pulling his knees into his chest while he watches.]

Will it be better?

Will what be better? [At least this part - getting the coffee ready, is easy. Maketh has done it before. There's a clear process, steps to be followed. Easy.]

Anything. Everything, maybe.

You don't do small questions, do you? [Maketh shakes her head and starts the coffee maker, then gets out the mugs and some milk. She's even tracked down some sugar as of late. Coffee is her one indulgence in this place.] I don't know. It got easier, for me. That's something.

Better but not good. That's too bad.

[On the bright side, at least, it could have been worse.]

Parts of it were good. [Are still good. She thinks of Lilith and Henry, how they had come into her life and found a place there seemingly by accident. Maketh shakes her head and fills both the mugs. The coffee here is strong and rich. She sets the mugs down on the table, along with milk and sugar.] Here. You can make it sweeter if you want.

What parts?

[This time, Maketh knows he doesn't mean anything else. The meaning is clear. She shakes her head and begins mixing her coffee the way she likes. This too has a process, a beginning and an end, clear steps in the middle.] The people. I met people who were--kind to me.

[She died on Henry's blade, kept Lilith's secrets, drank with Rey, tried her best to mend things with Emily and Chris. Found something like family with Newt. All of them strangers to her, but important now. They will all live. She will do anything so they will live.]

Friends and feelings and faces, freed. You should remember those parts. They're happier.

[Maketh hums in agreement. It's motivation for when things get bad. And they always get bad in this place.] Try some coffee. It's good, I promise.

What is it?

It's powered beans, steeped in water. [Maketh adds some milk to hers, watching the color change.] It helps you stay awake if you're tired.

I don't need it. I'm not a person.

Then what are you? [Maketh pauses.] And it's not...it's just a nice thing, Cole. It tastes good.

Solas says I'm a spirit. Varric calls be "kid." Vivienne says I'm a demon, but I know I'm not that. I help people.

[None of those names are familiar to her. Maketh sips her coffee, thinking.] And what do you think you are?

I'm me. I'm more me more than I was before. I float, fly, flit, fall into Fade and fading. I can hear more, see more, be more help more. All the little hurts I couldn't hear. Still soft, still singing and sighing but I can hear them better.

[That...isn't helping much. Maketh shakes her head.] Cole, can you...read minds?

[Like the Inquisitor?]

No. I only see if it hurts, if it needs help. I can help, sometimes, but I can't help if I can't hear.

[That seems cruel. Maketh shakes her head.] Try the coffee, yeah? You might like it.

[It's an abrupt change of topic, but he eyes the coffee anyway.]

It's too strange.

Oh? [Well, not everyone likes it. Maketh shrugs.] All right, then.

Sorry. [One day he'll learn to stop apologizing.]

[There's not much that can be said to that. Maketh shrugs again.] Well, you can stay if you want. I don't have anything else, I'm afraid.

That's alright. I don't need to.
