hadriel_logs | Intro Log: Off my chest

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for April.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: April 10th-13th
Warnings: Newbies, explosions, and things that are definitely treasure chests and not evil monsters out to get you.

Welcome to your first day in Hadriel! Enjoy your surroundings, meet your fellow travelers, and be sure to start exploring so you can collect as much loot as possible!

On the ground around you may notice bang snaps, scattered haphazardly. Try not to step on any of them, or you might burn your feet! Feel free to gather them up and use these baby fireworks however you see fit; there are dozens strewn about on the ground. Popping them will emit clouds of smoke of various colors, and... well, not much else.

Is there anything else lurking around? Glad you asked! If you look around, you may find a few innocent-looking treasure chests. Which you know, normally means free loot- except, in Hadriel, nothing is quite the way it's advertised of course and the chests are actually dangerous mimics. Mimics- often disguised as treasure chests- are monsters with surprisingly quick movements and gaping maws filled with teeth. They exist to try and fool an unlucky traveler into thinking they've gotten something good... only to lunge at them in their moment of triumph and prove that life is actually terrible and nothing comes for free.

No one manages your defence?

[ That can't be right. There are actual monsters in those caves. These people need more than a piecemeal defence. Damen frowns at Noah. ]

How often do attacks come? At the least, we should have guards at the perimeter. Do you feel safe without them?

I haven't felt safe in almost ten years. This isn’t anything new.

[Noah shrugs, because that is how Noah conveys almost every emotion. That and sighing, which is also tacked on for good measure.]

We always get monsters when new people show up, which is almost always every thirty days or so… otherwise, it depends on if Fear wants to mess with us, and how. He seems more inclined to bring in outside threats than Rage.

Because people fear the unknown.

[ Of course, that makes a kind of sense. It's why people are afraid of the dark. Every soldier has to master that fear, if they expect to stay alive. The unknown can't be offputting; it's to be conquered, not lain beneath. ]

And what does Rage do? Give you something to be angry about?

[ That wouldn't be hard, Damen thinks. He's angry enough about all of this already. ]

[Noah ohs, like Damen just said something very clever and wise that Noah hadn't thought about before. That does make sense, then, for Fear to bring monsters in. Noah tries to think of what Rage does, really. Mostly just give them weapons or things that could be used for weapons, like the shovels. Other than that, there was what happened when she first showed, which was...]

... Mostly ... make us angry with each other...

[ Damen looks at Noah, and honestly finds it difficult to imagine this boy getting angry with anyone. He's very mild. It's almost as difficult to imagine getting angry with him. None of what's happening here is his fault; if Damen's going to be angry with anyone, it will be the gods themselves.

So he thinks, without having experienced their influence. He'll be confident in his assertion until he's not. ]

When you say make you angry.

He gives you a reason, or he...forces it on you? [ He doesn't know how else to put that. If it sounds awkward, it's because Damen is awkward. This is language he's not used to. ]

[Noah has not inaccurately been compared to one of those extra-soft toys meant for toddlers. Also to a kitten. In general, Noah is ultimately a nonthreatening presence.]

She. And it's... the second. When it's happened. Just this overcoming feeling out of the blue. [Noah sighs, dismayed.]

[ Damen watches Noah, carefully assessing his response. Even now, the boy just seems sad about it. Damen would be angry. Anger at the thought of being made to be angry. ]

And what happened? What did that anger make you do?

[Rage is probably going to just love him. Anger is a foreign emotion for Noah, though. Fear and sadness are much more his routine.]

I couldn't do much at the time, so thankfully I was just... mad. But I know some people ended up hurting others because they couldn't control themselves.

[ A nod, brief and troubled. Anger may be an emotion he's accustomed to, but that doesn't make this more welcome. Damen knows the kind of damage he can do when he's angry. He doesn't want that turned on innocent people here. ]

[Noah nods. He’s not sure how much of a difference his explanations made, if he only made things more complicated, but he’s hoping he was helpful.]

Stay safe. Rage’s temple is the one by the armory. Delight… I’m not sure where her temple is exactly but she can be found in the bar sometimes, it’s in the northwest corner of the cave.

[With that last direction he’ll just let Damen get back to whatever the heck he was going to do with the monster corpses.]
