But that doesn't leave my life points wide open. I also play Magical Trick Mirror. This allows me to take a spell card from your graveyard and I choose Monster Reborn!

[A white light surrounds Atem's graveyard and moves to Kaiba's side of the field. It shouldn't be possible for his grin to get any eviler but it does.]

I use it to bring back OBELISK THE TORMENTOR!

[The large blue mass rises from the ground on Kaiba's side of the field. Protecting him from any attack and Atem's face down cards.]

Your magician is no match for a God, Yugi.

「Oh dear Egyptian Gods, that sneer, it brings back memories, and even a hint of what Kaiba is about to do — he should be more surprised to see Obelisk in his opponent's side of the field, but in truth, he's not, at all. If anything, it makes him smirk even wider.」

Haha... You simply couldn't resist the temptation of controlling him for a moment, Kaiba?

「Atem is not even mad, this is, great. He's enjoying it thoroughly and it shows.」

I guess I cancel my attack, and I end my turn.

「He even makes a gesture with his hand, bring it on, dude!」

[A moment for now. Atem's the one who used up his monster reborn, not Kaiba. He's still got one in his deck, and when it shows up Atem might just be facing down a God again. All of that plus "Oh I will" was said in his confident stare.

As Atem ends his turn, Obelisk disappears and Kaiser Sea Horse returns to the field.]

[He continues with just a quick glance at the new card.]

First, I use Kaiser Sea Horse's special ability in order to summon Blue Eyes White Dragon!

[The large dragon descends on the battle field and roars at its opponent. Blue Eyes vs Black Magician. As always.]

Then I play Card of Demise. This allows me to draw until I have 5 cards in my hand as long as I discard my entire hand at the end of 5 turns.

[He drew the additional cards with a flourish and placed one in a trap/spell zone.]

Now! Blue Eyes destroy Black Magician with Burst Stream!

Magic Hats, activate!

「And of course, it's a wasted turn. At least Atem doesn't make any other witty comment about it as the Magical Hat just disappears leaving another four on the field. He doesn't have to, that smug face of his says it all.」

I draw! First I play Pot of Greed!

「You know what's coming...」

Which allows me to draw two more cards from my deck to my hand!

「Aw yeah. It's been so long since he's said that!」

I set a card and I end my turn. Let's see if you have more luck this time!

[Kaiba practically ripped the top card off of his deck in frustration. He only had 4 turns left before he had to discard his hand, and those hats were making him waste another one. A 25% chance wasn't acceptable. Time to bring it up to 75%.]

I play Lord of D in attack! This prevents you from targeting any dragon with a spell card, but that's not all.

[The shit eating grin is back in full force as he slides a card into a spell slot.] I equip him with Flute of summoning dragon! I can now special summon up to two dragons from my hand. Care to guess which ones?

COME FORTH! BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGONS!

[Two additional dragons appear with the same dramatics as the first. All three roar in unison at Atem's hidden monsters.]

Now, Blue Eyes! Destroy his Magical Hats!

「The view of the other two dragons coming to the field has never failed to make Atem's stomach tie itself in knots, due the excitement, due actual fear, this time it is no different, but his almost trademark smirk remains as he stands proudly before the magnificent beasts, even though they lack of that certain something, he realizes, just as Obelisk did before.

The dragons attack three of the hats, all of them missing his Black Magician, and, when only one of the hats remains, it dissolves, revealing Atem's monster. For once, Atem does not laugh nor makes any comment about it, but he sets his eyes on Kaiba for a second, it's clear he no longer has any protection against any other attack. But it his turn now.」

I draw...!

「Atem actually takes a second or two to stare at the newly drawn card, another to look at his hand and just like that, his smirk seems to be gone. Clearly, he got something he wasn't expecting.」

I set a monster in defense mode. Black Magician, attack Lord of Dragons!

[The flaw of Lord of D was that he had to be played in attack to use, which left the weakling vulnerable. He had nothing to stop the attack, and had to watch as Lord of D was destroyed and his Life Points dropped to only 700. But it was worth it.]

[He barely glanced at the card before slamming it into his disk.]

I play Pot of Greed, which allows me to draw 2 additional cards.

I play one card face down, then I use the spell card Polymerization on my three Blue Eyes White Dragons to form the ultimate monster; BLUE EYES ULTIMATE DRAGON!

[The three dragons writhe against each other, and stretch there necks towards the sky. Three ear shattering roars, merge into one as their forms blend into a blinding white light. When it dims, the three dragons have been replaced by a massive Hydra.One body, and three heads all shrieking their defiance towards the Black Magician. ]

A fushion monster can't attack on the turn it's summoned. So I play Quick Attack!

GO BLUE EYES ULTIMATE DRAGON! DESTROY THE BLACK MAGICIAN WITH TRIPLE BURST STREAM!

「Ultimate's attack seems to through, or the hologram of it does, so realistically that for a moment there is nothing but dust in the field, surrounding Atem and his monsters. As it dissipates, the Black Magician is still very much there--

A shit eating grin fully takes shape on Atem's face. There was no need to even call for his move, it's obvious now. But allow him to spell it for him...」

Too bad, Kaiba, I activated my spell card, Multiply, on my set monster, Kuriboh, negating your Ultimate's attack!

「Far too obvious as the many, many fluffy monsters float around, protecting him and his Black Magician from the vicious dragon's attack (or any other, for now).

Atem allows that to sink in before proceeding to his turn.」

[Those damn Kuribohs! One of the strongest monsters in the game should not be able to be blocked by a weak ball of floating fur. It's an insult to everything that Kaiba believes. His smirk twisted into a snarl, as he called out his next card.]

I activate Final Attack Orders! I'll finally show you the folly of keeping such weak monsters in your deck. You can hide behind them if they're in defense, but they're worth nothing in attack!

I replay the attack! Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon destroy those weaklings and wipe out his Life Points!

「Kaiba's anger might not let him see it, but a bit of that cheeky smirk that Atem carries is not all of it, he truly seems to be smiling thoroughly at all this — he's happy, truly happy, and it only took Kaiba being there to make it so.」

I'm not so sure about that. I activate my set card, Swords of Revealing Light! And, your monsters cannot attack for three turns! Your current attack is negated!

「A series of swords made of light fall from the sky, restraining Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon's movements.」

It's my turn! Draw! I play Card of Sanctity. We both draw until we have six cards in our hands. Next...

「Oh, sweet mother of Osiris... The smirk is back with plenty of sass on the side as he looks as his hand, this is too good to be true. But, he seems to hesitate, Kaiba also has six new cards that could mean the end of him, but... the opportunity is just too good to let it pass. Surely even Kaiba might appreciate the show — regardless the outcome.」

Hehe, you might want to take a seat, Kaiba! Because I activate Awakening From Beyond, you draw another two cards while I add a Monster Card from my Graveyard to my hand. Also, I play Soul Taker, you get a thousand life points back, but I can use your Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon as a tribute; Black Magician, Kuriboh, lend me your strength, come forth once more, Obelisk the Tormentor!

「Ultimate might be gone, but the swords remain, ready to restrain any other monster that Kaiba summons for the next three turns.」

Also... I play Graceful Charity, I draw three more cards and discard two.

I'm not done yet--! I activate, Altar of Restoration, and I banish the top two cards of my deck, allowing me to get a card from my Graveyard — it's Monster Reborn, and I play it immediately to bring a monster I just sent to the Graveyard! I offer a thousand life points — when the means of resurrection are granted, Ra shall come forth from the earth and those who face the God in war shall be incinerated in flames — hear my plea, Sun God and become a Phoenix! Now, rise from the ashes, Winged Dragon of Ra!

「As the Winged Dragon makes it's fiery appearance on the field, not as in his regular form, but as a bird in flames, a phoenix, Atem recites to himself an ancient prayer made for him his eyes closed momentarily out of respect to the God's spirit residing in the card, since the figure that appears before them, is nothing but a hologram, and when that's done...」

And lastly... 「He's not bloody done, no...」 I play Premature Burial. I pay eight hundred life points and I select a Monster Card from my Graveyard that I also discarded earlier, and I can special summon it in attack position and equip it with this card!... Osiris, the Sky Dragon, come forth! And, since have four cards in my hand, his attack becomes four thousand!

「The Sky Dragon seems to bring a the storm with him, thunder roars and a light rain starts falling on them, but it's only the weather of the island itself, it certainly makes Atem wonder if not his God's doing, if anything, it helps his mood. The three gods growl at Kaiba at unison and Atem just smirks at him, for a moment, he's not in Hadriel anymore, he's back in Domino.」

Obelisk, Ra, Osiris, attack Kaiba's life points directly!

[Kaiba could only watch in awe as all three Gods were summoned in the same turn. He stared at where his blue eyes had just been taken in order to bring them forth. He couldn't even be angry that his ultimate dragon was used as a tribute. Anything was a tribute before the god cards.

The last image of Kaiba before the attacks landed, was of him standing tall and perfectly still, before disappearing behind the cloud of the combined attacks. 8000 combined attack points, plus Ra’s infinite Phoenix form. The sound from the attacks was enough to shake the ground and stands, even if there was no real impact. The noise was almost enough to drown out a responding roar echoing from within the dust cloud.

Three streams of light erupted from the cloud, each aimed at a different God. Osiris and Obelisk were pierced and exploded in a fall of white light shards. The Pheonix was hit, but with no effect.

The Phoenix’s descent parted the cloud to reveal Kaiba once again standing behind the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, as well as three large cards turned face up: Final Attack Orders was still there, now joined by the trap card High Speed Aria, and the spell card Silent Doom. ]

Only 2 out of 3. But I'm taking you with me.

[It was the quietest he’d been during the entire duel, but still enough to carry across the field. He locked eyes with Atem as Ra crashed through his dragon, and slammed into him taking his life points down to zero.]

「Atem merely waits for the dust of cloud to dissipate, his heart beating hard in his chest. Only so few duelist could make him feel this way... But of course, it couldn't be that easy, could it? No, not with Seto Kaiba. Atem had practically delivered half of his deck to his hand for free, of course he would have something, anything to make things difficult for him.

The Pharaoh actually startles, letting out a small grunt as two of his beloved Gods fade with a blast, it couldn't possibly hurt him, but a phantom sensation settles down his chest; his lips part in awe when he can finally see the mighty dragon in the way. Then, he just smirks.

Ra attacks, but he remains in the field afterwards.」

I didn't think I would be needing this... but I'm glad I activated it during the Egyptian Gods' attack.

「In Atem's side of the field, just the single remaining set card Atem had on the field had been flipped, activating its effect.」

Reduction Barrier... You thought I would underestimate you?

「For a moment he just lets the silence in between set in, his eyes locked on Kaiba's for as long as he can. His expression, prideful, but modest at the same time, he's honored, truly honored.」

Kaiba had often wondered what would have happened if he had been there at the ceremonial duel. Would he have been able to defeat the 3 God cards there? If he couldn't, how did Yugi? Did Atem throw that match?

He finally had his rematch, but he didn't have any more answers than he had before. 100 points.

There was a difference in this defeat. He didn't feel angry. It was a new sensation after a loss. Maybe it would come later. He looked across the field for mockery or pity, but didn't find it. This was new territory. His confusion of what to do next was quickly replaced by a haughty sneer.]

Hn. It seems I underestimated you. I'll allow you to keep the title awhile longer.

「The simple fact that Kaiba didn't turn on his heels and left him talking alone, was enough for Atem. He could feel the recognition given, and not only in those uttered words — not that listening to them didn't make him swell with pride — but there was something different in his whole demeanor, it was something more akin to the last time he saw him before him taking off to America, after Battle City.

Was this something inherent to the fact that he was somewhat a different person to the one he knew? Or was it something else? He cannot tell, but he also doesn't want to think about it much, he doesn't want to ruin it.

That sneer is, yet again, a little more familiar, to which Atem just shakes his head with a good amounts of amusement. That's... that's classic Kaiba, he might as well stop thinking of him as a different person.」

Heh, I won't let you get it back so easily next time either.

「Not after all he had done to get it back. For sure, it had never been Atem's aim to get the title the first time, he had told him so in the less kind way possible, his goal had always been an entirely different one, one that maybe this Kaiba wouldn't still believe in. But now, it held another meaning all together, and it was his and he was going to wear it proudly and fight for it if necessary.

Hmm, what do they do now? Usually this is where his friends intervene and tell him how awesome he is. But for now, he just stares at his rival-slash-friend.」

[Kaiba stared back. It wasn't anything as juvenile as a staring contest; there was nothing more to win or lose here. There was always somewhere else to be after a duel. Just enough time for a 'I'll get you next time', before they were both off to their own spheres.

No one was dragging them away. Atem wasn't being replaced by Yugi. There was no important business for him to run off to. There was actually nothing he had to do that couldn't wait. Oh!

He'd almost forgotten the phone. Who knows how long it had been pointed at the two of them just staring at each other. He walked over to the phone and shut it off without a word.]

「Who knows indeed. But it is not Atem who breaks the silence either, though, when Kaiba finally turns away it is him who approaches, his duel disk has been deactivated and his deck kept away to the safety of his belt. And he just seems to be waiting for the other.」

[Kaiba isn't surprised that Atem is waiting for him. There's a moment, when he thinks he should be, but it passes. The brief distraction of collecting the phone wasn't long enough for him to figure out what to do now.

More comfortable in silence and action than words, he doesn't break it either. Just gives a curt nod of acknowledgement and starts to walk away. It could be taken as a goodbye, or a let's go. Whether Atem decided to leave, or follow him Kaiba could pretend he knew which it would be before it happened.]

「Atem follows, he has nowhere else to go at the moment, not that he'd want to go if he did, it doesn't occur to him that he's sticking to what is familiar. Kaiba is familiar.

And they really don't have anywhere to go, walking aimlessly around the island is not quite a plan, he also... doesn't want to let go yet. Celebrating alone is not fun. At last, it is him who takes the reigns and finally breaks the silence.」

[Kaiba shortens his steps to match Atem's even before the silence is broken. He's still not sure where he's headed, but he doesn't have to decide until they come to some kind of cross-road.]

It wasn't, but I won. Getting back that title deserves a to be celebrated, Kaiba.

「He says with a little smirk.」

「He won twice, didn't he?

[Kaiba tries to glare at that taunt, but it's clear his heart isn't in it. Where is the anger? He just lost the rematch he should be storming off, to replay the duel until he's ready to try again. Instead he's relieved that Atem cares about the title again. And just ~~happy~~ satisfied that the rematch had happened at all.]

Tceh.

[The glare turns into a smirk as he looks forward again.]

Fine. Do you have boat to get to the speakeasy? I'll concede the drink, but I'm not rowing you anywhere.

「Wait, did he... did he actually say yes!? How's that such little agreement makes the Pharaoh smile all the way through, he's not sure, but he doesn't even think about it.」

Hmm!

「The Speakeasy is now quite far, sounds like a huge chore.」

I don't. But, I got some stuff at home, if you don't mind going there instead. It's also way closer.

「It would lack of people being around which Atem would miss, but he's not inviting them all a drink, he's inviting Kaiba, and maybe the CEO would appreciate it a little bit. He's actually not quite sure.」

[Kaiba was prepared to put up with a crowd if he had to, but the less people the better. It did feel odd to go from a duel to the other's home, but he'd already agreed to the drinks and it would be easier than getting to the other island.

That doesn't mean he was going to be agreeable about it.]

Of course you do. It'll make getting you home after you're too drunk to stand easier.

[He'd only seen Atem drink once at Hope's feast, and had been less than impressed. But his tone isn't harsh, by his standards.]
