Intro Log: DIY Survival

What: The intro log for July
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: July 10th-14th
Warnings: Who's that Pokémon?

You wake up on an alien planet. All around you are things that might be familiar- rocky ground, stone columns of a colosseum, overcast and dreary clouds above- but there's a lingering doubt in the back of your mind that you're not where you should be. Nearby, there are a dozen or so other people going through the same thing, so maybe you can stop and say hello... or, if you're more of an antisocial type, you might sneak away before anyone takes special notices of you.

Be careful of sneaking too far though, because you may run across an unfriendly Kabutops! From the Pokémon franchise, Kabutops is a prehistoric creature with scythes for hands that can cut through the water (and human flesh) like it's nothing. Its skin is rough and difficult to penetrate with basic weapons, and contrary to what anyone canon-savvy may expect, they are impossible to tame- so you might try to run while you can.

If you manage to escape from the pointy dinosaurs, you may find some hip new ways to accessorize! Strewn about the ground with the new arrivals are an assortment of bedazzlers in various states of functioning! They may only have two stars on Amazon, but Bedazzlers are a cultural landmark, easily used to bling up your lifestyle! Alongside the various equipment are, of course, various studs, gems, sequins, rhinestones, and anything else that you could possibly attach to some clothing or hand towels or curtains or underwear with a Bedazzler kit. Happy crafting!

If you've finished collecting all you need for your new home decoration, you can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

That's great, because I definitely don't have any money right now.

[He takes a second to pull a pair of pants on. He's all in favor of chatting, but he'd like to be at least half dressed if he's going to have a conversation.]

But uh, yeah, just got here. Name's Peter.

I don't think anyone's got any coin right now. You're lookin' at a place of old fashion barterin'.

[She shifts her eyes away until she thinks he's mostly zipped and buttoned. It's a late courtesy, considering she's already seen him.]

I'd say welcome, but it's not exactly the kinda place people want welcomed to. Sorry you got kidnapped by wannabe gods, Peter.

Bartering. Ooookay, I can work with that.

[That's good news, now he doesn't feel so much like he's stealing this stuff. But yeah, now he's all pants'd and he's pulling a shirt on and life is good.]

Thanks? I think? Yeah, we'll go with thanks. I mean, I guess it could be worse.

Hey, at least most of the folk here aren't hard 'bout it. We're stuck together. No real use in makin' people pay much for what resources we got. [Girl can count on one hand the number of people she trusts here, but she knows the value of working as a group. Keeping everyone alive, sharing resources; it's a matter of long term survival.] And I think these shops just come with the gods takin' your emotions deal.

Yeah? What's your definition of worse?

They steal my emotions, I get free pants. I can't decide if that's a fair trade, but I do like having pants so I guess I can live with it.

A lot of things could be worse, really. I could be dead, or on fire, or missing a leg or something. This sucks, but it's a step up from that I think.

They're takin' the emotions anyway, so you might as well clean 'em out while you can.

[At least that's her rationale for taking things from the shops so often.]

You got a real downer way of thinkin'. Most people would be goin' costa rica if they wound up kidnapped, not lookin' at the bright side.

See, but costa rica is still on Earth, so it's not impossible to get home. You're right though, I guess that is pretty pessimistic. I promise I'm not usually this bad, it's just been a weird day.

[Which is putting it really lightly. The arena with the monster things had been a step up.]

[She frowns for a moment. She's only ever heard of Costa Rica as an expression, not as a place. She's about to explain, but thinks better of it in light of the look on his face.]

It's not just you. Everyone kinda loses it their first day. [At least he didn't get caught in a crying temper tantrum, like Girl had her first day.] If you haven't broke anything yet or broken yourself, you're doin' better than a lot of folks.

[Yeah don't read too much into that, his mind is in like twenty places right now]

See, I'm mostly good now? But I have a feeling that this is all gonna catch up with me in a day or two and I'm just gonna freak.

Maybe stay away from anything pointy or projectile in a day or two. Or windows. People might not be forgivin' if your freak out makes you break stuff.

But if it makes you feel better, you ain't alone. All in the same boat, yeah? Everyone's been through it. So, you know, most folks won't judge much if you get moody.

My freak outs don't usually involve breaking stuff, so I think I'll be okay there.

It does help that other people like get it, though. I mean, I still feel completely lost, but it's not as bad as it could be.

[He sounds better adjusted than most of the people she knows. She shrugs, nods.] You'd know you best.

Keep thinkin' like that. Maybe you'll be lucky and things 'round here won't get worse. Maybe all the bad's behind us. [She doesn't sound like she believes it.]

[Yeaaah she doesn't sound like she believes it. Peter doesn't really believe it either. But hey, optimism!]

Well, even if it isn't, maybe I can find a way to help out around here.

[Optimism meet a pragmatic. Girl's nose wrinkles up as she looks at him with a mix of doubt and concern.]

Well, you got any skills? 'cause if you mean helpin' with the gods stuff, you might want special powers or weapons or something. I don't think they care who they hurt, you know? The monsters they keep bringin' in sure don't stop just because someone is normal or unarmed.

Skills? Oh yeah, I've got a few.

[He's not planning on elaborating on that just yet, he just gives her a little shrug.]

Hey so, out of curiosity, how many people around here have like, powers and whatever? Is that normal?

[She waits a moment to see if he'll explain and nods when he doesn't. She can't say it's not smart to keep things close to the vest. They just met. If anything, it makes Girl think he's got the right kind of head on his shoulders.]

Okay. Good. If you can find a way to use 'em right, you should. There's always someone needin' help 'round here.

A lotta folks. I've seen people turn into birds or teleport. Like, I'd say a good third of us. Maybe half. I can't tell you if it's normal, but it seems like it's normal for them. [She snorts.] Where I'm from only one human person got powers and that went away after it was used. So, to me, totally not normal.

[Well shit, color Peter surprised. He wasn't expecting more than a handful of people to have funky powers.]

That many? That's nuts! Like, people having powers isn't weird where I'm from, but it's only a few people out of like millions.

Yeah? [She ignores the surprise in favor of zeroing in on that detail. Another place where power was almost normal.] What kind of powers? Did you know them?

[She eyes him, a question for whether he has them on the tip of his tongue. It's only that Girl wouldn't want the question turned on her that keeps her from speaking.]

There was a lady who had... I think some kind of telekinetic powers, something like that? Another guy could shrink himself super tiny or grow like really huge. I'm not sure about that cat-suit guy, he probably had something going on. One dude transforms into a big, green angry guy. There's all kinds of weird stuff.

[Weird but completely awesome.]

Wha-really? [It all sounds like the kind of stories Party talked about existing before the wars. The ones older runners told to the young, all fantasy because they always ended with the heroes winning. It is hard to think of it as real.

But, well, she's friends with someone who turns into a bird.]

So, like, they just exist everywhere? Just big green guys hangin' out wherever? Or are they doin' something with those powers? Like, fightin' giant lizards or robots or something.

[The power of BIRD would be pretty damn cool, just sayin']

It's not really a lot of people, at least as far as anybody knows? Some of the ones everyone knows about, they just try to use their abilities to protect people. Like, fight the really crazy stuff.

[It was pretty cool to watch. You know, after she stopped screaming in surprise.]

That's- uh, I still got questions. Like what's the crazy stuff? Or, how are people like that just known? They must be mega infamous. Bet it attracts a lotta attention. Lotta the wrong kind.

Like aliens, robots, other people with powers and stuff. They're not exactly subtle with what they do to begin with, and like everybody has a phone these days. These guys probably can't even sneeze without ending up on Youtube.

But yeah, you're not really wrong about that. Infamous might not be the right word, most people are cool with them. Not everybody's a fan, though.

[She smiles slightly at the mention of robots. Even the Null couldn't dampen her obsession with robotics.] Don't know what that 'tube stuff is, but that sounds kinda rad. Like you're livin' in some science-fiction movie.

Guess it'd make sense that some people are against 'em. They always are the stories. Always somebody against everything out here in the real world.

Yeah, it's... basically exactly like that. It's a little exhausting, to be honest.

I think I'm still trying to get used to the idea of all this being the "real world".
