What: The intro log for August

As you wake up on the sand of the colosseum, gazing up at cloudy gray skies, you might wonder what you're doing here. Where are you? How did you get here? You'll figure it all out soon enough, so try to clamp down on that rising panic, or you just might end up in a dangerous situation.
Because, of course, you're not the only thing that arrived. The Door has also chosen to pull in some rust monsters. These monsters may look a bit like insects, but they're much larger, with a rather vicious bite. You can fight them, but be careful - anything metal that touches them instantly begins to corrode. Your sword, a bullet from your gun, even your robot friend. Might want to keep a little distance.
And that's not all. Scattered across the ground of the colosseum can be found a variety of unique and delightful musical instruments. If you're the musical sort, maybe you can figure out how to play one - or maybe you already know. Hopefully no rust monster has wandered too close to the one you want to try, or you might find that it's missing important metal bits.
Once you've found a way to express the song in your heart, feel free to leave whatever bit of safety you've found. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers August 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

An orchard sounds nice. Pretty. [she takes a look around herself] This place could use a little pretty. What kinds of vegetables did Rae-Rae have?
[she is going to be so horrified when that happens]
no subject
[It's hard being a vegetarian when your food comes in non-perishable format. He's going to be so sick of canned corn very soon.]
This place could use a lot more pretty, maybe some more orchards.
Mostly pumpkins in the fall, but during the year they grew apples and pears and lots of leafy things. Spinach, brussel sprouts, kale ... never thought I'd miss kale. But I do.
no subject
[no one eats animal products where she comes from. and she'll likely get entirely sick of canned corn, too, but she'll still make herself eat it.
she perks up at the mention of an orchard]
There's an orchard here? What kinds of fruit does it have?
[she sounds wistful] All of that sounds so good. We don't have any of those things here?
no subject
[ He doesn't exactly look like the picture of health, but a lot of that has to do with the fact he was literally starving to death prior to Hadriel. Eating nothing but fruit and canned veggies is more than he's had before, but not exactly the most nutritional diet. ]
The orchard has trees growing things that are similar to food on Earth but .. not quite. The apples are really good. There's some pear like things, a citrus fruit, some sweet little cherry type ones. But I haven't seen any vegetables.
I'd commit crimes for a salad right now.
no subject
[it's true, he does look to be on the overly thin side, but she's assuming it's a side effect of being here]
The fruit sounds good, but no vegetables? At all? How are we supposed to have a balanced diet without vegetables?
I still can't believe there are no vegetables.
no subject
Your whole world is vegetarian? How'd you manage that?
no subject
Can't we get seeds from somewhere and grow the vegetables? Then everyone could have fresh food.
Enough people became tired of the cruelty that goes into slaughtering animals. Eventually, it became uncouth to eat meat. Like smoking in the 21st century.
no subject
[He looks away a bit as she mentions that people back home avoided cruelty. That must be so nice, he can barely imagine it. With everyone shooting each other no one was even paying any attention to the animals. Well other than the ones that were drugged up killing machines.]
You come from a nicer world than I do.
no subject
You're right, it doesn't look particularly good. If there were means to start up a hydroponic garden, we wouldn't have to worry about soil, but I don't know anything about how to set something like that up.
[there were those who still started problems, but those people were quickly caught and tried and sentenced. for the most part, though, Earth was a utopia. so were the others in the United Planets. except for Daxam.
she hesitates a moment] What was your world like?
no subject
[Besides the only time he's ever heard of or seen a hydroponic setup was for weed. It only just now occurred to him that people could use that setup for anything. Plants are not his specialty.]
Constant fighting. Religious zealots. People betraying and killing each other. The water is tainted and drugged, food is running out.
[He shrugs, looking away.]
Home sweet home.
no subject
[they aren't hers, either, but she knows that agrarian worlds like Winath made much use of such things.
and she just. gapes for a moment. before recovering. because such things are unheard of in her utopian future] That--that sounds awful. I'm so sorry.
no subject
Not your fault. People are horrid, and they ruin all that they touch. Everything we build, we tear it down.
But it would be nice if just for a while... it wasn't like that. Go maybe a few days without watching someone die.
no subject
It's that bad, even here?
no subject
[He grimaces, thinking of Caedra.]
It's mostly animals and monsters and the place itself trying to kill us. Well so far anyway.
no subject
[because she was a superhero. she can't run from this fight]
That's still a lot to deal with.
no subject
[What he means is not by him. Also he hasn't really tried because staying out of their way is a much better option.]
This place is trying to constantly keep us on our toes. Probably to exhaust us, weaken us.
no subject
[you can take the girl out of the Legion, but you can't take the Legion out of the girl. if someone's a threat to the lives of others, she wants to know about it]
Probably. But we can't let them succeed.
no subject
There's a guard force that I'm sure would be happy to have you.
[What with the flying and all.]
no subject
Really? They work to keep the people here safe?
no subject
[He doesn't sound optimistic.]
I assume so. I haven't seen them in action. Figured they wouldn't want a Deputy from Montana poking his nose into their stuff, so I haven't seen what they're up to. And I can't offer them much, you have ... powers. That'd be incredibly helpful next time we're overrun with giant bugs.

[He feels a little useless when there's people around who can do so much more than a regular, boring human.]
No one should be able to read minds.
[Shudder. The cult back home was close enough and that was already horrifying.]
no subject
[and it's reflected in her voice and expression]
There's an entire moonful of people who do. They use it responsibly.
[and if they don't, there are harsh laws to punish them]
no subject
[He is grossed out by the mere thought of an entire planet of people who can read minds. What even is responsible mind reading?]
Maybe I could. I'm not sure, been busy just trying to survive let alone help anyone else.
[All evidence to the contrary as he's running around the Colosseum trying to save people. He doesn't have a high opinion of himself. ]

[she's getting that general idea, yes]
