As you wake up on the sand of the colosseum, gazing up at cloudy gray skies, you might wonder what you're doing here. Where are you? How did you get here? You'll figure it all out soon enough, so try to clamp down on that rising panic, or you just might end up in a dangerous situation.
Because, of course, you're not the only thing that arrived. The Door has also chosen to pull in some rust monsters. These monsters may look a bit like insects, but they're much larger, with a rather vicious bite. You can fight them, but be careful - anything metal that touches them instantly begins to corrode. Your sword, a bullet from your gun, even your robot friend. Might want to keep a little distance.
And that's not all. Scattered across the ground of the colosseum can be found a variety of unique and delightful musical instruments. If you're the musical sort, maybe you can figure out how to play one - or maybe you already know. Hopefully no rust monster has wandered too close to the one you want to try, or you might find that it's missing important metal bits.
Once you've found a way to express the song in your heart, feel free to leave whatever bit of safety you've found. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers August 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
RIP Squish Cubes
What do your 'no killing' rules say about bugs?
/sheds a single tear
[she bites her lip] Not too long ago, we fought a spider-like alien called Tangleweb. He was evil, raiding trading vessels and eating the brains of the crew. It even killed a Legionnaire. We still brought it in.

[He's honestly curious even though here in the colosseum is not the best place to discuss this.]
Though I'm not sure we have anything to kill them right now anyway. If I had my machine gun...
[He hefts the sledgehammer over his shoulder, he's not going to be able to crack through their insect carapaces with it. He wasn't able to with the kubutops that had infested the area last time and those were a whole lot smaller and less intimidating looking.]
no subject
[maybe not, but they can take care of themselves]
A machine. . . gun? Like from Earth's past?
[she punched one in the face? that seemed to stun it. or maybe only confuse it]
no subject
[It's Vietnam old, not WWI old. Or at least that's what he thinks she's talking about.]
We don't have a jail here for giant bugs. So we either kill them or leave them alone to eat people. The strong will survive, they always do, but anyone else would be killed, and I'm going to assume you're against that.
... Maybe we can chase them into the ocean and they'd drown.
no subject
[nope, not quite]
I really don't want anyone to be killed.
It might work? How far are we from the ocean?
no subject
There's no way humanity survives that long. It doesn't matter what we do, we'll always find a way to destroy it, to break it down.
[He shakes his head, he doesn't want to think about the world nearly a thousand years in the future.]
Not too far, it's an island. Probably that way is the closest to water.
[He points to the east.]
no subject
No, I'm not. . . fucking with you. I'm from 2997.
Humanity had its rough patches, but it managed to pull through. Earth's where the United Planets begun.
[in her universe, Earth is practically a paradise. peaceful, prosperous. or it was before the White Triangle started spreading the message of separatism and race-hatred]
All right. I guess we'll have to herd them that way somehow?
no subject
[Sorry man, you've lost him because his world view is tenuous at best and he's jumping on any little scrap to let him know that either the resistance was right all along and the cult back in his world was bullshit. Or that the Father's religious doomsday predictions were accurate, and he's leaning far towards that one unfortunately. He's completely lost interest in the bugs and the people in the Colosseum, because this woman is from the future! A future where people still exist!]
How.. what was it like?
no subject
The Collapse? What collapse? Earth had a couple more world wars, but none of them went nuclear and everything eventually united into one nation under Earthgov. [she smiles] And it is beautiful. The megacities like Metropolis are huge, but there are still wildlife and nature preserves.
[technically, she's only fifteen years old. but yes, she's from a future where people still exist and Earth exists in harmony. or it did before the White Triangle gained ascendancy with its philosophy of race hatred and prejudice]
It was normal to me? People lived their lives and didn't really have to want for anything. Sure, there were people who preferred to stay on the fringes of society, but it was because they wanted to, not because they didn't have other options.
no subject
That still sounds good. Too bad I won't be alive to see it.
[ Because of course. He doesn't get any good stuff, just the shit. It's his lot in life. ]
Does everyone else fly too? And do the ... invisible thing?
no subject
It is good. I miss it already. This place. . . seems so strange.
[that's a pretty lousy lot to have]
No, only Legionnaires can fly. And it's not invisibility, it's intangibility. It's a native skill of everyone from Bgztl.
no subject
[And he's not even going to touch the Bgztl thing because he's confused enough already.]
A lot of this place is falling apart, there aren't many trees or greenery, and the sun rarely comes out. I'm from Montana, I'm used to forests. Mountains. Not all this.
no subject
[what? it's just another planet in perfect orbital and rotational sync with Earth but happens to be in another dimension]
Really? That. . . sounds depressing. [she is not thinking about her time in the forest] I think much of what used to be Montana is now a wildlife preserve.
no subject
It is depressing. Reminds me of Seattle. Or what I've seen of it on TV anyway. I miss the sun and the wildlife. All we have here are weird monsters and sad withered plants.
That's good, at least something worked out well for Montana, we get shafted on everything else. Hope it's full of wolves and deer and no people interfering.
no subject
Are there no places for growing things and no animals besides the [she hesitates a moment, not wishing to dismiss the creatures brought with them through the Door as monsters but feeling as though "aliens" wouldn't necessarily be taken well] monsters?
I've heard it's beautiful there, but I never had the chance to go. People who do go have to follow very strict rules on what they can and can't do.
no subject
There's an orchard with some vaguely recognizable fruit. The apple things are pretty good, but it's nothing like back home. I miss the veggies from Rae-Rae's pumpkin farm.
[ Well there's an orchard currently right now... until it all gets cuts down for boats. :( ]
no subject
An orchard sounds nice. Pretty. [she takes a look around herself] This place could use a little pretty. What kinds of vegetables did Rae-Rae have?
[she is going to be so horrified when that happens]
no subject
[It's hard being a vegetarian when your food comes in non-perishable format. He's going to be so sick of canned corn very soon.]
This place could use a lot more pretty, maybe some more orchards.
Mostly pumpkins in the fall, but during the year they grew apples and pears and lots of leafy things. Spinach, brussel sprouts, kale ... never thought I'd miss kale. But I do.
no subject
[no one eats animal products where she comes from. and she'll likely get entirely sick of canned corn, too, but she'll still make herself eat it.
she perks up at the mention of an orchard]
There's an orchard here? What kinds of fruit does it have?
[she sounds wistful] All of that sounds so good. We don't have any of those things here?
no subject
[ He doesn't exactly look like the picture of health, but a lot of that has to do with the fact he was literally starving to death prior to Hadriel. Eating nothing but fruit and canned veggies is more than he's had before, but not exactly the most nutritional diet. ]
The orchard has trees growing things that are similar to food on Earth but .. not quite. The apples are really good. There's some pear like things, a citrus fruit, some sweet little cherry type ones. But I haven't seen any vegetables.
I'd commit crimes for a salad right now.
no subject
[it's true, he does look to be on the overly thin side, but she's assuming it's a side effect of being here]
The fruit sounds good, but no vegetables? At all? How are we supposed to have a balanced diet without vegetables?
I still can't believe there are no vegetables.
no subject
Your whole world is vegetarian? How'd you manage that?
no subject
Can't we get seeds from somewhere and grow the vegetables? Then everyone could have fresh food.
Enough people became tired of the cruelty that goes into slaughtering animals. Eventually, it became uncouth to eat meat. Like smoking in the 21st century.
no subject
[He looks away a bit as she mentions that people back home avoided cruelty. That must be so nice, he can barely imagine it. With everyone shooting each other no one was even paying any attention to the animals. Well other than the ones that were drugged up killing machines.]
You come from a nicer world than I do.
