Intro Log: Puddle Jumpers

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Fresh meat, lots of rain and angry ogres

If the rain on your face isn't enough to wake you up in the colosseum, maybe the thundering footsteps and- well, thunder- is. The first thing that you may notice is that it's incredibly wet around here, with winds that could knock you over if you aren't careful and thunder that brings with it a torrent of constant rainfall.

That's all fine though, because the gods saw fit to help you out on your way in and now everyone will be waking up wearing a rain coat! These coats are a little odd, and some of them are downright silly, but we trust that you'll make do. Of course, a few of the raincoats have additional sleeves, neck holes, and entirely too many buttons as well- but hey, it's the best we could do.

Wait, what was that about thundering footsteps? Oh right, as you're navigating your new fashion choices, there are some monsters afoot who will want nothing more than to grind you into a pulp and eat you- well, if you're organic, that is. If you're not organic, then they still want to grind you to a pulp, but maybe not so much the eating part.

Ogres are from many fantasy stories, but these in particular are from the Dragon Age series. With incredible strength and stamina and massive horns, fangs, and a bloodlust for violence, these monsters won't stop until everyone around them is a blood smear on the ground. They're also not too happy about this rainfall either, so be careful not to slip in the puddles as you run away from them!

Once you've splashed around a bit, feel free to run off into the stormy abyss of our islands. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[ Kettara shrugs. ]

Sometimes. I mean, we don't force them. Or we're not supposed to. Master Muln says it's our duty to work in harmony with the elements, even when they make it difficult.

Sounds like a smart guy. That also sounds a lot more challenging than dealing with people who make things difficult.

[But it's okay because you can punch them. You can't really punch fire. Or wind.]

He's my teacher. One day I'll be a great shaman like him.

[ One day. Kettara deflates a little, pushing her bangs out of her eyes again. ]

Or I'll try, at least. Sometimes the elements don't listen to me at all.

Sounds like you're still getting the hang of it, right? The fact that you can literally talk to elements at all is amazing to me, but if you keep at it, I bet you'll have them doing back flips for you.

[Y'know, once she can get out of here and actually start talking to them again.]

[ Kettara giggles. ]

Maybe!

[ She pauses, tipping her head to the side. ]

....you're not a shaman, though. You move like a druid, but you don't change form.

[She is the most adorable huge green lady ever.]

Druid? Pretty sure none of my powers have anything to do with magic. Unless that spider that bit me was enchanted or something, but I kinda doubt that.

You were bitten by a spider?

[ That's...unusual, though Kettara supposes she's heard of stranger things. ]

This is where your power comes from?

Not like, a normal spider. I don't know all the specifics, but yeah, that's pretty much it.

[It's pretty strange even where he's from. Everything about Spider-Man is strange.]

[ Kettara scratches her head, thinking. ]

Was it infected with something? I've heard of such things.

[itsnotaonesie]

Not with like a disease or anything. It was someone's science experiment, might have been radioactive or something? I was a little too distracted by the fact that I was being bitten to really ask questions.

[oldtonew]

Oh.

[ Kettara supposes that's one way to gain abilities. She's heard of stranger. ]

They suit you well, these gifts.

[itsnotaonesie]

[He can just shrug, really. He's not sure how or why things happened the way they did, but he can't complain too much.]

Once I got used to them and really learned how to use them, yeah. They weren't really that great at first, though.

[oldtonew]

Oh? How do you mean?

[ Tell her everything. ]

[he will weave her a web of... whatever this is. Dumb spider-puberty?]

Oh man, okay. So the first thing I noticed was that I was really strong all of a sudden? I accidentally broke all kinds of stuff because I just wasn't used to it yet. Man, I must have broken half of my aunt's dishes with my bare hands, which is coincidentally also how I found out that I heal from injuries really fast.

Then I noticed that my senses were all way more... I guess sensitive than they used to be? That took a lot more getting used to.

[oldtonew]

[ How strange! Kettara leans forward. ]

Your senses are...improved? In what way?

[itsnotaonesie]

[He kinda does this little wiggle thing while he tries to decide how to describe the weirdness.]

Huh... well, my eye sight and hearing got way better. It was actually kind of painful at first, like... imagine you're in a room being bombarded by really loud noises and blinding lights, and then someone starts tilting the room from side to side? It was just too much input all at once, but it's not so bad now that I'm used to it. The first couple months though, just constant headaches.

[ How strange. Kettara isn't sure what she expected, but not that. ]

It sounds like when a druid shifts form for the first time. Only...you didn't, exactly. But everything has balanced, now?

[itsnotaonesie]

Yeah, I'd say it's balanced out pretty well. As far as I can tell, anyway.

You've mentioned druids a few times, what exactly is that? Because it sounds pretty cool so far.

[oldtonew]

[ Kettara nods. ]

They're like shamans, only they commune with nature itself. The spirit of the world. As part of their gifts, they can change their bodies. Become animals.

[itsnotaonesie]

They can turn into animals!? That is awesome! What animals, just whichever ones they want?

[oldtonew]

[ Kettara grins. His enthusiasm is infectious. ]

Yes! Generally, a druid has four forms they can choose: their own, one for healing, one for heavy fighting, and one for moving swiftly and silently. The form depends on the druid and how they were taught. But often they are bears when they wish to fight, or a tiger when they wish to run.

[itsnotaonesie]

[At least he's spreading enthusiasm and not spider diseases or. Something]

Oh, man. Okay, so the bears for fighting and tigers for running make sense, but what would they turn into for healing?

[oldtonew]

It depends. Sometimes a Moonkin, or a trent - a tree spirit. [ Kettara admires the ability to change forms. Druids follow a different, though adjacent path to her own. There is much to admire about their dedication to the world. ] They can fly as well. Turn to owls or ravens. Sometimes even sharks, when they need to swim.

[itsnotaonesie]

Birds too? Wow. Your world is way more interesting than mine, just saying. What's a "Moonkin", I've never heard of that before.

I've heard that bird forms are more difficult. [ Kettara wishes she could do such things. What would it be like to fly? ] Moonkin are...well, they're almost like bears. Only a little more intelligent, and they walk on two legs. They can fly a little, though not for very far.
