Event Log: Gifts from the Door

Who: Everyone taking place in the event
What: Random stuff showing up all over Hadriel!
Where: Throughout the islands
When: Oct 5th-8th
Warnings: None

For once, something terrible isn't about to happen- unless you think that getting stuff is terrible, in which case it absolutely is! On the morning of October 5th, items will start appearing all over Hadriel from various other worlds. These items are generally small in size, but are absolutely not from Hadriel and not anything that the gods could have really created, given their limited knowledge about the customs and culture of whatever world you're from.

It's just as well really, because some of this stuff is alien to you as well. Different things from different worlds are all liable to show up and they don't always wind up matched to those whose worlds they're from.

So maybe you wake up with a candy bar on your pillow- or maybe you find some coins that look alien to you, or a necklace, or something else that you may be unfamiliar with. The only way to find out what it is is to ask, right?

With the Speakeasy on the southernmost island, it's hard for Rey to ignore the occasional unsettling presence if the foggy zone. It's smack dab in the middle of everything, after all. And when there's not much else to do on the south, scenic options are limited.

Not that she finds that hellish part Sharon had left scarred on the city to be scenic. Rey has seen the fog at its worst, and has only ventured down memory lane a couple times since.

So when she finds a caffeine-addled teenager heading straight towards the fog, Rey halts abruptly to shift her directionless walking. Her hand snatches the back of his shirt just in time before Atem could vanish into the mist.

"The fuck do you think you're doing?"

Sure, she's seen the cards riddled here and there, among a variety of other shit, and Rey had been meaning to find the kid about that. Where she's standing, though, Atem's actions seem more suicidal than a glorified scavenger hunt for trading cards.

Atem's search has become an actual way to pass the time by now, the familiar objects from home (probably) just have him set on finding as most cards as he possibly can. They are not even his, he's not even sure they are from home at all, but they are familiar and that's what matters. Maybe, maybe if he keeps looking he'll find something else, something more important than a three star monster, something like Gandora or the Silent Magician, something that actually reminds him of home. Home isn't a place...

But before he can get more serious about it and go look in a place where no one would, he can feel someone pulling him.

"H-hey!" He turns around just to see Rey, what does she think she's doing? "I'm going in, what do you think?" Wasn't it incredibly obvious?

At least it's Rey and not some spooky monster. The horror.

She doesn't seem at all satisfied by that answer, though.

"And what's so important that you'd think it's a good idea to go wandering into one of the most dangerous parts of the city?"

With the caves no longer a factor, it really is more dangerous -- with maybe the exception of when monsters pour out of the Colosseum.

"I've been there before. It's been fine." He probably has been incredibly lucky, as usual. But he obviously doesn't answer to the question. She wouldn't understand.

"What does it matter anyway?" He cannot bring himself to say it, that he would come back if something happened to him. He always, always dreaded that unnatural way that the so called gods handled things, but, it didn't really matter.

Of course, Rey would have some Choice Words about it not mattering. The fact that Atem even has to ask that, however, gets under her skin like no other.

"What the fuck do you mean, 'what does it matter'? Do you really think of me like that?"

As someone who doesn't give a shit? Has she done something to give him that impression of her?

Rey's anger is met with him actually tensing up. He should know better than saying these things out loud at her.

"What? No... It's just..." Just, what? "I'll be fine, nothing will happen... Don't worry about me."

Anyone who knows Rey would learn fast that she has next to no filter when it comes to speaking the things on her mind. That includes a lack of any restraint from calling friends to acquaintances to even people she downright cannot stand out on their bullshit. Her eyes narrow at Atem's utmost dismissive approach.

"If someone you gave a shit about was about to walk into a supernatural minefield from hell, do you think you wouldn't worry just because they tell you 'nothing will happen'?"

Don't you dare lie to her, son.

"I would, but I would go with them." And that is nothing but the truth. "It's fine, whatever, I will not go in there." He says now with an annoyed tone more than anything. It's probably not worth it.

Fair enough. Rey can't say she's never done the same, but...

"Think it depends on why you want to go there, exactly. It isn't someplace you take a casual day trip to on a whim."

Atem hesitates, he's a bit more than ashamed to admit that he hasn't moved on like he's supposed to, that he still is looking for things or ways to remember his partner, to be close to him in a way.

"I... wanted to see if I could find something else in there." Which isn't a lie either, but it's not all the truth.

When it comes to moving on, Rey isn't the best candidate at convincing someone to do just that. If anything, she could understand, sentimental and foolish that it might be.

"Because of the random shit that's been showing up all over the place, right?"

She can't imagine that the Silent Hill Zone would be exempt from that.

"Yeah."

He turns to look into the fog, it should not be different than the rest of Hadriel. He has already looked mostly everywhere anyway. While it is a shame that those cards might remain unfound, that they might rot and disappear in that place, they might not be what he hopes to find. Wouldn't that be more disappointing in the end?

Not really no, not if he doesn't even try.

"Dying isn't the worst thing that could happen to anyone, I thought you knew that." He doesn't look at her when he says it.

Now that pisses her off, and it shows. There's a flaming hot anger that somehow remains tamed in her gaze when she replies, her voice low and growling.

"And that's why, if you decide to get yourself killed over a bunch of fucking trinkets, I'm going to kick your ass right out of Hope's temple so hard you'll wish you could stay dead. Because there're a lot of ways of making a person hurt without killing them."

Rey doesn't often advocate senseless violence against the ones she gives a damn about, but when it comes to them being idiots, she is willing to make an exception. It might not even be the worst threat she could give, unless Atem is willing to test just how serious she is.

The threat is telling, but it makes him look at her with infuriating calm. It's not like he hasn't seen her angry, but never at him. At least not ever since then.

"Is that what you want? To hurt me so I don't hurt myself?" What is she even saying? "Don't worry, there is no need for that, I often wish that already."

This isn't at all how he thought this would go, he probably said much more than he intended.

Much as Rey wants to keep being furious, she just gapes at Atem, eyes wide one moment, then glaring the next.

"The fuck's the matter with you lately?" It comes out forceful and harsh, but she's worried for the kid. This isn't some god influence; she'd feel it too, if it was. Which means that if that attitude is all him, then something is horribly wrong.

Lately, she says, and Atem can't help a amused sound at that. She hasn't noticed that things have never been okay, ironically, that's okay.

"I dunno what you're talking about." It's always been like this, she doesn't know how many times he's thrown his life away for others would call a mere game, willingly. It's probably best she doesn't know. I would gladly die for the cards... Kaiba would get it...

When did he become like him? Or had he always been that way?

He snorts a little amused.

To Rey, it's never been a matter of being okay. When has anyone here ever been the definition of 'okay'?

No, it's about this reckless behavior over something so meaningless (to her) that's why she's bothering at all. One doesn't just get that way overnight, but Rey hasn't been blind to Atem's downward spiral. Hell, she's been that way herself... and she hasn't forgotten the efforts he had made for her then.

"Really? So you're saying you always would have considered taking a stroll through one of the most dangerous parts of the city without telling anyone? That you've always wished for that sort of shit?"

"Are you trying to make me say those things? Because that's so not what I said." He might be reckless, but in truth he doesn't go thinking of ways to put himself in danger at every moment, he just doesn't seem to care much once he's in that situation, especially not when it involves anyone but himself.

"It's not about what you said. It's what you mean, and right now you're talking a whole lot of shit."

Maybe not bullshit by the means of 'bullshit', but the way he talks about death and dying hits a nerve and Rey isn't going to let it slide.

(Worse yet, he's sounding like her sometimes.)

"Sometimes I do that, I guess..." He can admit that, and he does it with an empty smirk — when he does, his lower lip tears a little where Kaiba had hit him, still not having healed completely, but he simply licks the wound. He can also admit, without really saying it either, that she's right, if she wishes to take it that way. Just take it. Maybe that's why he never talks about these things, they are all full of shit and he knows it.

"Don't tell me you never lost something and didn't do a lot of stupid to get try getting it back."

She doesn't have to admit it, whilst he doesn't have to specify either.

That much she can see. Everyone does it. Talks shit about themselves. Nick's done it, Rose has done it, Atem has done it... Rey sure as hell is no innocent on the matter, either, which is probably why it's so easy for her to catch those details and sense a lie.

"Yeah, but I don't make an active effort to bite off more than I can chew... anymore," she adds that last part with some disdain towards herself. "That's why I haven't died in--" Pause. Mental math time. "--eight years."

That's almost a whole decade of being alive! It's an accomplishment when you've lived the life (lives) she has, so shut up.

Anymore.

When is it enough? When does one stop trying too hard? Sure as hell he hasn't come to that point yet, not even after everything. That certainly catches his attention, if the silence is any telling, but he doesn't ask, he supposes it's something everyone might figure out on their own. If they ever do. Clearly he never did, maybe this time around might be different.

"Is that a personal record?" He asks with a little irreverence, but also, truthfully curious about it.

"Hell no," she snorts. "That's more of an average, really. Not dying past ten years would be... but Schmidt's record would be hard to beat."

Lucky for Rey, she is Schmidt, and Safronov, and Stone, and all of the other women that she had spent their brief lives as. They're all part of her.

While she doesn't mean to derail, sometimes it's better not to agitate someone further when they feel backed into a corner. Not if you want them to stay civil towards you, and Rey isn't looking to burn any bridges.

It's clear that Atem is guiding the conversation away from him, it's something he always does but it might not be hard at all to notice by now, not for someone like Rey. Hardly feeling cornered, he knows by now that she will not let him go into the fog without a fight. One that in all truth, he doesn't wish to have. His reasons are completely selfish and all she wants to do is keep him safe.

It's fine, he can play that game too.

"Heh, just something else I beat you at." He stares at the fog one last time and at Rey before he simply starts walking away. If she wishes to follow or not, he will not complain.

Well, it's a step in the right literal direction, seeing that Atem isn't about to go marching into the fog. She turns to follow, if only to give him a sharp, subdued rap against his shoulder.

"Sure, but if you try beating them at any of the shit they did, you'd lose a limb or several. Losing body parts suck. Would know that, too."

She knows he's purposefully attempting to steer the conversation, trying to make light. For now, she'll play while he isn't as guarded as before.
