Who: Kaiba and Atem
What: It's Kaiba's birthday
Where: The Speakeasy
When: Backdated to October 25
Warnings: None. Will update if they get into another fight.
Kaiba sits at the bar in the speakeasy contemplating his drink. Technically he shouldn’t be allowed to have it. Not that there were drinking laws here. Not that he’d paid any attention to them in Domino anyway. Who was going to tell him he couldn’t? How would it look for him to carry around a soda when everyone else had wine at a business party. He might as well just shout “I’m too young to be in charge” in the middle of the room.
He hadn’t voluntarily celebrated a birthday in close to 15 years. Besides what did a birthday mean here anyway? The prevalent theory is that everyone forgot they were here and returned to their original point in time. Ignoring all of the bullshit in that theory, would that mean any aging would be undone? Is there enough of a difference between 18 and 19 that he would notice anyway if it wasn’t?
The only thing happy about his 19th birthday was that no one here knew it was.

It sends a shiver down his spine to get to listen it from his rival. It wasn't until he listened that Atem realized how much he had been hoping for this moment. If only the situation was a completely different one. The expression he makes is not a pleasant one, but one of fear. He had always been aware that Kaiba knew him from the first moment they faced each other, he always was able to see him past the vessel that was Yugi, but for him to accept that he's truly there and that he's not the other boy, it's actually terrifying on its own.
He's not... Yugi to him anymore. Yugi is not there.
Yugi is not there.
"I miss him!" He cannot hold that truth any longer, it feels like vitriol in his mouth, it makes him shake and blurt it out as it were to kill him. "I miss him more than life itself! He was everything to me! Can someone like you understand that!?" He, of course, doesn't think he can.

Except it was also his weakness. Not for Yugi of course. He couldn't care less there. But he knew that brokenness. He'd felt it, just two months ago finding out Mokuba was gone. He knew Atem couldn't remember his outburst anymore. He had wanted to tear Atem apart for giving him that news rather than admit it hurt him. Even though it was obvious that it should. Especially since it was obvious that it should.
He stood silent a long while, probably too long. He didn't look angry or pitying. He respected Atem too much to offer him pity. He also couldn't offer comfort. All he had was harsh advice from years of experience.
"Pretending he's here does nothing. You have to move forward or die in the past. "

Atem's demeanor shifts into something else as the silence elongates; the cornered animal is about to pounce and kill anyone in its path, itself even, if that means getting out of there. There is a fire in his eyes that no the one of the proud duelist he is, it's just pure unbridled rage. Not entirely at Kaiba, not even for bringing this up and not wanting to learn his place, but at himself. They wouldn't be in this situation if he had chosen to stay with Yugi. If he hadn't lost that duel...
"Hah, shall I remind you of it?" The smirk in his face is dangerously close to a snarl. "I'm already dead, Kaiba!" That's his response, the timbre in his voice verging into sarcasm and cynicism, and from its edges something more somber bleeds, cruel mockery for himself, something Kaiba might be familiar with.
"Move or I swear to the Gods I'll hurt you." Little does he know that he might be already doing so.

If Atem wanted to fight, he shouldn't have chosen cynicism as his weapon. Kaiba was much better at it.
He learned forward to be eye level with Atem as though to make sure he could hear him down there.

It's but a rapid, full of rage blow with a deadly aim, as if he were tossing a card at someone. He can hear a sick wet sound coming from Kaiba's face but at this point he doesn't really seem to care. He does though, he does and hates himself for it, but he cannot allow Kaiba to take away the only thing he has left from his partner.
At least it gets the job done and even if for a moment it clears the path in front of him.
"Stay out of my way, Kaiba." That's all he says as he passes by him and towards the exit. Just a second later the only sound that can be heard is the slam of the front door as it's forcefully closed.
