Warnings: Fireflies as a conduit for drug use. Annoyingly catchy songs.

On May 3rd, you may wake up and notice that something is different about the cave. Are you sure it's the daytime? Maybe you didn't sleep long enough, because it still seems pretty dark outside. Or, of course, the gods are messing with the lights again.

This time, however, it seems like it's actually a good thing. Sometime around the afternoon, some smaller lights begin to appear around the city, trickling in from Delight's temple and flickering on and off. These fireflies are brighter than what you might be used to, but being illuminated by their light will mysteriously allow a small surge of joy to rumble through you.

By May 4th, the shops are stocked with large mason jars, and you can start distributing them and using them to catch these fireflies as you wish. They're most concentrated in and around Delight's temple, but by now, the delight-erflies are pretty fairly spread throughout the city.

Be careful (or don't) of how many you catch! 1-3 fireflies in a jar will be enough to give you a mild emotional boost, at 4-6 you might be able to realize that you're definitely happier than you used to be, at 7-10, you can definitely tell that something is making you more cheerful, warm and happy. Beyond 10 fireflies, the additional effect gets smaller the more fireflies you capture, but it will still continue to build until you may just spend the next few days wrapped around your firefly jar in a pleasantly drugged stupor.

Just, uh... don't forget to eat.

As someone who prefers to run from my problems rather than cope whenever possible, I feel extra bad.

[Noah laughs, totally missing any and all sarcasm.] Nah. Ronan’s my best friend from home. And I think of the people I’ve met here, you’re already my best friend. So the position has been filled.

[ The Demon's brain, held together with metal staples and baling wire even at the best of times, screeches to a halt and stops functioning altogether. ]

I'm what?

Well like, Ashley's a good friend too, don't get me wrong. [Noah loves all of his friends dearly, but everyone has favorites. That's just a fact.] But just counting the friends I've made here, I'd say you're the best.

[ Now his brain is misfiring all over the place and he just stares for a bit. ]

Is this because I killed the yeti?

[ Because he's sure as hell not emotionally supportive. He's struggling to figure out what is going on here. ]

You killed the yeti?

[He knew the Demon got into a scuffle, but there was kind of a lot going on to worry about the specifics. On that note, wait, back up.]

No. ... It's because you're nice to me.

[Like, duh.]

I am?

[Wait. no one told him he was being nice. What the hell?]

I don't think me not being mean to you is the same as me being nice to you.

[Or is it? HE IS SO CONFUSED.]

Thanks, I think.

No, you're nice. You look out for me.

[Noah smiles, still hugging the fireflies close.]

Thank you. I don't know if I've ever said that yet.

I guess....

[Because he feels like if he doesn't look out for you you'll get killed and he cares about that for reasons he can't comprehend.]

You're uh... welcome. I think.

[Okay this is weird. He is uncomfortable and this is weird. LETS TALK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE.]

You should probably feed those fireflies.

[Noah smiles at the 'your welcome', so it was probably the right thing to say. Look at you, Alcohol Demon, learning People a little bit at a time! You'll be a great friend in no time.]

Oh! Yeah, Ronan showed me how. Like, probably. Assuming these eat like normal fireflies... he knows more about that kinda thing than I do.

Probably wants you to fatten them up so he can feed them to the bird.

[yes lets talk about this instead of anything having to do with feelings.]

[Noah laughs rather than getting upset, so the Demon is safe from bruised feelings and pouting Noah for now.]

I don't think she eats fireflies... but I don't know, now that I think about it. Maybe I should catch more for her to snack on then?

Well where I come from birds eat corpses so anything is probably an improvement. Dead things and whatever the fuck I'm made out of. Rare delicacy.

[But the whole world isn't Metro and there's places without the Oro with real birds and real people and things aren't intensely shitty. He's pretty sure birds eat bugs. Pretty sure.]

[Noah tries to think of what he's seen Chainsaw eating before. Well, definitely bugs, when she was little. Ronan had to feed her every two hours and she made a sound like something from hell or worse. Now, though...]

... She eats cheese crackers...

[And other stuff. But. Noah remembers the cheese cracker.]

You know... I'm just going to accept that at this point.

[He looks at his bug in a jar one more time.]

What do you think happens when these guys die?

[Noah sighs, then shrugs. He looks down at the jar again.]

... I don't know. They don't look like they're making more baby fireflies.

I meant more that everyone is getting high off these things, they're probably all going to spiral into some horrible depression when they're gone.

[ After he says it he realizes what that means and that he might have to go through round 30 of trying to console Noah and dealing with emotions. Ugh. ]

What, like with ecstasy? I'm pretty sure that's a myth.

[For such a sweet face Noah's pretty acquainted with drugs and liquor scene. Or at least the drugs and liquor scene of 2006.]

I was thinking more like with Meth, but sure. Why, you a pro at coming down from ecstasy?

I don't know. I mean, I think I've probably done it before? I can see my old self doing it.

You think.

What do you mean you can see your old self doing it? You either did or you didn't. There isn't much of a middle ground here.

... There is when you know you were into a bunch of dubious stuff and have holes in your memory large enough to drive a semi-truck through?

You didn't say memory loss was a part of whole being dead thing.

[He sounds a bit accusatory there.]

[The fireflies are improving his mood, so while that reminder would normally have Noah growing sad and distant again he just gives a little sigh.]

I could make a joke here about trying to remember to say something but forgetting...

Yeah. I lost a lot of myself when I died. I have two sisters back home. Had? They're still alive.

I don't remember what their names were.
