Have you ever looked through someone else's eyes? Heard through their ears, spoken with their tongue? The gods have tried to teach some of you empathy, but it's time you learned the hard way, exactly what the others here have been through. For a week, every time you brush skin to skin with someone, you'll experience a memory of theirs: happy, sad, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that it feels real to you.

The first touch may come as a surprise- it lasts only for a split second but may feel like an eternity, where you're trapped in someone else's memory. After that, it could be more expected, and some may even figure out how to control it and share specific scenes from their past with others. Or, you might wear gloves and long sleeve shirts for awhile, nobody's judging.

Maybe curtail the handholding for awhile- or go right ahead, if that's your thing. After all, you never really know somebody unless you've walked a mile in their shoes, right?

[ Hopefully Jake is okay -- it's really disorienting. But although it turns out Jake got something awful? It's nowhere near as bad as it could have been, and it doesn't out him, so Drake just feels relief even as he winces a little in sympathy for the pain of the memory. ]

Okay, buddy, take a breath, you're at almost double your normal speaking speed. [ A tiny sigh at the question. ] It's the digging my own grave and shooting me one. That's what happened. I was investigating a friend's murder, on my own time, no backup. Didn't go so well.

Wow, your whole career is way grittier than mine!

[ It's almost like they exist in different genres altogether. Weird, right? Turns out that Jake doesn't handle seeing people he likes getting wounded in any scenario. ]

I mean, you survived it, though. Right? You're right here. And not dead. [ Jake dramatically puts a hand on Drake's shoulder. ] Wait, is this a sixth sense scenario? Was one of us Bruce Willis all along?

[ Drake hesitates at that, not minding the hand but also not knowing what to say about his state of alive-ness because. It's kind of just being dead. But are they there yet? Drake doesn't like lying to people. He decides honesty is probably better, in this case, because if Jake finds out some other way (and he probably will, it's Hadriel) he'd be more upset. ]

That's not what killed me. That time I wound up dating the doctor who saved me.

[ Oh no. That's so ominous. ]

And then you lived happily ever after with 2.5 kids and a minimum of credit card debt?

[ Please tell him that's how the story ends. ]

No, man. I'm very dead. Just not here, which is why I never seem like I'm in much of a hurry to leave despite it being... you know. Hadriel.

[ Sometimes you've just gotta go blunt. ]

Sorry to break it to you this way, but maybe it's better to spit it out before you're emotionally invested in my welfare.

Cool. Cool, cool, cool.

[ That was definitely blunt. Jake tries to figure out how he feels about all of this, about someone who has been a really good friend basically from the moment Jake met him. For all that Jake is an absolute wreck he also has a quick answer to Drake's little comment. ]

Uh, what do you mean 'before'? I'm already invested, buddy. Our names rhyme! The only reason I'm not calling you my best friend is because I think Charles would spontaneously manifest just so he could feel threatened by you.

[ That gets a surprised blink... Drake does have a tendency to bond fast, but he doesn't project that on anyone else and so few people have ever actually cared about him that. It's surprising, okay? He's got a feeling Jake isn't saying all that just because their names rhyme. But he can grab onto that, try and make the guy feel a little better. ]

We'd make a good buddy cop team, right? Jake and Drake?

[ You can even have first billing. ]

Exactly! And hey, maybe we can figure out a way for you to come back to Brooklyn with me when everything is done being horrible. We can always use more good cops.

[ How hard can it be to bring someone to a different world? Who knows, maybe they're even from the same world. It's possible! ]

[ Drake tilts his head -- he wasn't expecting that either. ]

You know... I think I'll put that option on the table. If you're actually offering to screw with records enough to make that happen. You're pretty damn upstanding.

Let's just say I know a guy who knows some guys. [ Man, that sounded cool. That sounded really cool. But of course Jake ruins the effect by not stopping there. ] By which I mean my friend Rosa's crazy boyfriend Pimento probably knows some guys who can get what you need. I just always wanted to say that.

You're a good guy, you deserve a second chance.

It sounded very cool, don't worry. I'll immortalize that part in my memory.

[ He reaches up on the side that Jake's on to clasp his shoulder right back, expression amused, yes, but mostly grateful. They're having a Moment, okay? And luckily are both in long sleeves so no more swapping for the moment. ]

Now what were you coming over here to tell me? You looked like you had something important to say before we went for our respective strolls down memory lane.

[ It's a very manly shoulder clasp. So manly and Jake is smiling and feeling pretty good about himself because he has felt pretty helpless since he arrived here. Being able to help Drake means a lot when everything feels out of his control. He's not sure the last time he had a genuine moment with someone like this but he'll take it. ]

Well actually I was just thinking about our names rhyming and figured we should come up with a badass theme song, you know?

[ Oh my god Jake. That gets a laugh out of Drake, who definitely does not sing and there's a reason for it. ]

You say we but you mean you right? I'm totally useless for this, you don't even want me doing karaoke. Which they have here, by the way, if you're into that.

Uh, no? And now we are definitely doing karaoke. You don't need to be good! In fact being good defeats the whole purpose of it!

[ Sorry Drake, you have created a monster. Getting you to do karaoke is Jake's new, terrible life goal. ]

You're going to drive everyone out of here covering their ears.

[ He's exaggerating but no, really, he's bad. ]

Also I'm gonna need to be way drunker to agree to that.

No one is ever bad enough at karaoke to drive people out of the bar. It just means everyone else needs to drink more to appreciate it.

[ Speaking of which... ]

Bartender! Four shots of your strongest alcohol! Each!

Jake--!

[ He's doomed, isn't he? Drake just starts laughing, dragging a hand down his face. ]

I've got patrol first thing in the morning, you know. This is it. Don't let me keep drinking.

[ So doomed. Jake is pretty good at roping people into his bad decisions. ]

I'll stop the booze when you go do some karaoke, Halloway.

[ And look at that, the shots are delivered and Jake downs one immediately. Keep up, Drake! ]

What, alone?

[ Drake grabs a shot and follows Jake's lead, letting it burn as he reaches for the next one. ]

You're going to have so many regrets about this.
